Let's not forget there is a lack of NHS dentists in the UK, so parents can't get access to advice or treatment.

Teeth brushing / dental hygiene is in the EYFS now so it should be happening in nurseries and reception.

I’m not defending poor parenting but, There’s always been some form of child neglect in poor communities. Is the lack of education through the years causing this problem? We used to have a group of lessons in our schools when I was growing up, the most important lessons was home economics. Part of these lessons were hygiene, dentist came to the school and taught oral hygiene. Along with cooking and cleaning, a few lessons on household management and it ended with sex education in junior school. In addition to these lessons the Nuclear family was heavily promoted. Homes could be managed on one income and mothers would generally be home to raise the children. We don’t know how these people live, so we have to assume they didn’t have good role models.

Too many children are at nurseries and not with their parents from a very early age

that has nothing to do with it.

@ruthhadfield9726 parents have passed on their responsibilities onto others, for whatever the reasons given

@constancehutchison1358 parents have to work doesn't mean they have passed them on. many working parents take on the responsibility and raise their children. nursery can be a village for the parents to support them

@@ruthhadfield9726 I said passed on their responsibility, I was a single mum and worked so I understand that, in my day there were only private nurseries so my mother helped me, however I was also a teacher and saw the results of sadly, parents not being allowed to stay at home with their children but go out to work. European countries pay mothers to stay home, that's the best for children, In my very humble opinion.

@constancehutchison1358 what results. sorry this again is trying to shame working mothers. both my boys went into nursery at 10 months old and they are thriving. one at school. many children I know who had a working mum are thriving. sorry but sorry this is an extremely ignorant view. sorry you couldn't stay home like you wanted, but don't tarnish us all with the same brush

When my son started school now and again they use to send out leaflets about dental health, the council did this thing called save kids from sugar and showed you what foods had more sugar than other foods and how to make healthier choices and other health issues to try and educate the parents hopfully.

You should be cleaning their teeth when they start to erupt from gums you don’t start cleaning at school age

I do agree that it is the parents responsibility to teach the children to brush there teeth. But what about the lack of NHS Dentists and there full up or u are on a big waiting list or you have to go private thats if you can afford it not everyone can. So thats a problem as well coz if people and kids need treatment and they cant access it then where do they go?

I remember back in 1970’s all children taking home leaflets about teeth cleaning. Part of health week. Im 60 now i’ve always cleaned my teeth from an early age. Also we could get Dentist appointments. The Dentist gave out leaflets too and spoke with parents. Even when my son was at school all the children got leaflets. I remember children’s programs teaching about teeth cleaning. Alot of it is children can’t get to see a Dentist too. It was part health care back in the day. By the way i’ve still got my own teeth. I really do feel it’s a generational problem. If their parents didn’t attend a Dentist then how do you teach your children. Having said that there are adverts on tv about children cleaning their teeth etc.

Am I behind or something, they already do this in Scottish schools or at least at the schools in my area where my kids go
