Do you know the #1 skill all late talkers are missing? IMITATION! They don't know how to imitate words... which is always linked to late talking. In fact, imitating can be the most important thing that separates late talkers from toddlers who are already talking. Imitating is how toddlers learn everything, especially how to talk! So... how do we teach nonverbal toddlers to imitate? Obviously, we can't start by trying to teach them to say words. They're not able to repeat words no matter how much we beg, bribe, and plead! What most parents of late talkers don't know is that there are "levels" of imitation that all kids learn before they begin to talk... whether a child talks late or on time. During their first year and a half, babies learn these levels of imitation easily and naturally as they mature and grow. When a child doesn't begin to talk on time, we know that a child has gotten "stuck" in an earlier level of imitation and hasn't been able to progress to imitating words. When this happens, we must determine where they're "stuck," meet them there, and then help them learn to imitate at higher levels until they're developmentally ready to imitate real words. Once they're imitating easily and frequently, we've turned them into full-time imitators, which leads to a child who talks!

This was so interesting and helped me understand what to start looking out for as a parent of a 20 months old late talker. Not only did it affirm that we were right to be concerned there might be an issue but it helped us observe what level of imitation our son is currently at and where we need to step in and start helping him. Yes we fell into the trap of having lots of other parents saying 'oh don't worry he's a boy, out son didn't start talking for ages either'. It's very clear you are passionate about your job and have a real interest in helping kids. Will definately be following the rest of the series. Thankyou.

I love this podcast. Parent and SLP-friendly! Laura mentions '16 gestures in 16 weeks'... I believe she meant to say 16 months? (around 1:13:14). Thanks!

My 3 year old has just recently started imitating... but not right away and sometimes in the wrong context I'll hear him repeating the thing later on. Sometimes he will say it right away but not always on cue
