Hi, I have a child with dyspraxia and autism. He is able to cut with the looped scissors but struggles to hold the theraputty or paper plate - I still need to hold these for him. How can I promote his ability to hold the object he's cutting? Bilateral coordination is a challenge for him overall, unfortunately. Thanks for any advice / feedback you can give me.
@TheOTGuide4 жыл бұрын
Hey there, thanks for your question. The way I do that is by sitting behind the student and providing hand-over-hand assistance. So instead of holding the paper plate for him, I put my hand on top of his and have him hold the paper plate with his supporting hand. So really, he would be holding it entirely himself, I would just be there guiding his movements and providing extra support. Does that make sense? It's hard to describe!

@@TheOTGuide yes! Physically prompting him to hold the object by having him hold it and then me holding that hand? Will try this today. Thank you so much!
@TheOTGuide4 жыл бұрын
@@JustMe-fx1uu Yep! Then gradually over time, you can reduce your physical prompting. So at first, your hand will be entirely on top of his, then it will be on his wrist, then the forearm, then you can remove it and gradually he will learn to stabilize it independently. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

I'm so glad it's helpful! And the rate of skill acquisition varies from child to child. If you set aside time daily for dedicated practice, it will happen sooner than you think! :)

So, what would you do with a playful child who just wants to experiment and doesn't listen to you?
@TheOTGuide3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! As long as they are being safe with the scissors, go ahead and let them experiment. Experimenting with how to hold them and how to use them will increase their familiarity and make the process of skill acquisition more enjoyable for them! Cheers, Dana

Hi dear.. My son finds difficult to hold scissors. How to teach him this
@TheOTGuide4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rajini! Thank you for your question. For my beginners, I give them kitchen tongs to practice picking up objects and placing them into a target (squeezing kitchen tongs is a similar movement to squeezing scissors and it's a good hand strengthening activity). Once my students can use tongs independently, that's when I upgrade the challenge to scissors. I'll sit behind my students and place the scissors correctly in their hands, emphasizing that their thumb needs to be on top. With lots of practice with me sitting behind them, supporting their grasp, and guiding their movements, they eventually get it! :) I hope that helps!
