If you are in control of the situation you should leash your dog. Off leash training should only be done in confined areas. I appreciate this video too but he is breaking the law

I agree. Yes it can be unsafe and unwise to have your dog off leash (I live in an apartment and it makes me mad when my neighbor only lets their reactive german shepherd outside off-leash…). But sometimes “just leash your dog” doesn’t fix the issue. I always walk with my dog leashed when I’m in the complex, and he will pull me if he really wants to go somewhere, including the road. I’m going to continue working on boundaries with him. This video is great, on or off leash! Just have to apply it to yourself and your dog the way it works for you both, and the area you’re in.

Exactly! You can leash your dog every single time, but that won't help you if your leash or collar breaks, your dog slips his collar, someone leaves the front door or fence gate open, etc. Accidents happen and relying solely on a leash is asking for trouble.

This video is awesome! I totally agree with you on understanding that bad things can happen on the road. My dog's is very obedient and very good at strolling with a loose leash and sticking to the sidewalk. But last week, he saw a cat, pulled a Houdini act getting himself off the leash, and chased the cat into the street. I was screaming my lungs out to bring him back. I can't stop thinking about what could've happened if a car had come by then. It's super important for them to get that they can't cross that line under any circumstances, no matter how stimulating the other animal is to them.

I have been working for ages to teach my dog road boundaries. It's led to SOME behavior that's more careful and paying attention before crossing roads etc with me but she's not PERFECT at it. Some solid tips here (and she's always on leash, but training boundaries like this is good.)

I still don't know till now why my Malinois was attacked driving cars on the street . But this was an obsession for him . We were spending a thousand pounds on training. No successful. One day, he was hit by car . Even this doesn't stop him . Additional bills to pay. We even stopped to walk with him outside, or we were chosen earlier morning or late evening for walking. Decided to change trainer. Change collar that the first. Was that simple step but successfully for the first time. No one ever from training saying about your technics. He's 95% better on stret right now, but it's still easily distracted by loud cars , cats, dogs, or shouting . I will definitely try this. Hope all dogs will be safe from road cose even little is enough to found our dogs under the wheel 😢

See I've actually managed to train mine to heel to me and he's just a little pitbull mix but I can generally take him unleashed through the city I know that that's not advised but me and him have a serious Bond and I trust him. I've actually even seen him around other dogs and simply walk the other direction when we are on the move. Thank you for this video it now helps me understand how I've made it this far with my dog training. And I now know the next steps to take so he doesn't even cross in the road at all on his own thank you

I soooo love your style. All of it. We are a multiple dog household. One of us does similar training and the other treats them like babies. Try as I may, I can't get her to believe that it's crucial to let them feel consequences in order to learn. Same with a cat. You don't want the cat to bolt outside? Shake an empty can of coins the second the cat goes near the open door. I guarantee that cat will stay away from a open door. It's not mean-spirited. It's to save your cat's life some day. How many are lost and never come home? Tough love. It's necessary.

Great video! Can you do a video on “leave it” or how we can get our dogs to NOT pick up food when on a walk?
@pittymama4500
@pittymama4500 Жыл бұрын
If you teach a good "leave it" command you can generalize that command to those situations. The key is to add in that punishment for when they don't obey your leave it because you're "leave it"should be a very powerful command. Just like any other thing that you teach your dog start off easy and work your way to something hard that is hard to ignore you start off with something that's not so difficult for them to leave alone maybe just a piece of their food and teach them the behavior with that. Only when they truly understand the leave it command you actually use it in a scenario where it is something that you absolutely need them to leave.

I love this and will be adding this to my training sessions with my dog. He's not fully off lead yet (in parks) but mastering this would give me more peace of mind that if he got spooked and ran off or chased a squirrel that I would feel better knowing he would avoid crossing a road. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm really enjoying your videos.

Dude that last example where you show your personal dog is amazing. My dog would just run for it but we will try this method. The problem comes when dealing with places which don't have curbs and do have cars (mountain roads or sandy roads near a beach) . How do I teach her to be mindful of cars themselves, and not curbs? I've seen some street dogs knowing this and would love her to be that smart 😁

Hamilton! I live off a somewhat busy country road. If I train using these methods in, say, a culdisac with grass and asphalt where it’s more calm, would it carry over to our specific road where there’s grass meeting the busy asphalt country road? Or do I need to try to train my dog on the exact road in front of our house?

I HAVE A 4 MONTH OLD GERMAN WIRED HAIRED POINTER AND I TAKE HIM LONGBOERDING, I DONT WANT HIM PULLING ME AT THIS AGE, but i don't feel comfortable holding the keash due to past incedents, i have tried off leash, but he only stays on side walk when i am close to the curb. he runs across the road when ever he wants and i take responsibility for that for letting a puppy with some off traing off leash. this was very helpful on teaching him to stay on the side walk, also i feel alot better about letting him off leash in my neighborhood. i see people in my neibor hood do this and i thought they were so cool,i will be the coolest 12 yr old in my nieborhood. thx

Thank you for uploading to youtube, and making this free for all to view. Very helpful video, technique and explanation / reasoning behind it. Just wondering what collar/leash you use / would recomend during these training sessions. Prong collars are illegal where we live, and usually i do training sessions with my highly reactive dog with a slip lead (using a quick pop / flick of the wrist when required for marking undesirable behaviour, never allowing tension to be kept on the lead. Big thanks to yourself, tom davis and will atherton for regulary posting content on hoe to properly use these training devices). I presume you are not using a regular collar and lead here, to make the pressure "punishment" more effective? If it is a prong, what do you recomend for places where prongs are banned, would a martingale chain, slip lead or something else be best? Thank you

We`ve tried many things after our parents (without our knowing) would take a dog for a walk and make it cross with the cheese in front of her face (she was scared to cross, which was actually way better). 3 years down the road, she is pulling in 60% cases before the crossing. Will apply your recommendation now!

Question… how would you adjust training in rural / country areas? Like I’m assuming using where the grass and the road meets like a curb and side walk.. but when going on walks for me there is no sidewalks we typically have to walk in the road and when a car comes we get out of the road. So how would you adjust training there?

You'd probably have to teach them the distinction between the road and the grass, or the side of the road. Teach them the difference between the gravel/dirt road and the 'curb' or grass. Same principle, just a different environment. The only issue I would see with this is if you were to take them on a trail that is also gravel and they would only think they can walk on the grass and bramble

This is a big issue for me in the UK. I live in the county often with no verge, let alone sidewalk. I've taught my BC 'pavement', and she gets back on the sidewalk. They have often been narrowed to 10cm(4inches) as the roadway has been widened. The safe walking place is often less well defined than in your city. I will adapt your techniques to this environment. Thank you for the video.

Awesome video and thank you so much for making it. However I have one small question.We have a 1.5 year old Romania mix breed - Mioritic shepherd dog. In our neighborhood a lot of people throw food for stray cats and dog, so among the first things I had to teach our dog was to not eat from the floor( which is going very well. same principle throw on the floor and stop him from eating it) . But now if I want to try the same method you showed in your video to get him to jump in the street and stop him, it doesn't work. The same goes for toys ( he doesn't have a big drive for toys). What else can I use in order to make him try to jump in the street and stop him? Any idea would be great.
