Teach your Labrador Retriever the game of TUG. One of the best games you can play with your dog to develop a great relationship and as a reward for good obedience. In this video I address how to start a young puppy off on learning the game of tug, in particular a Labrador, a dog not always known to play tug. We start with Duane as a young puppy of about 9 weeks old, showing how to get the puppy interested and following up with Duane at 2+ years old.

Love this video and your channel in general. About a month ago had to rescue a friend's Malinois puppy. I have experience with dogs last rescue, the love of my life was a pit mix who had had some nasty abuse before being rescued. Love your channel. We brought our puppy to the vet a year or so ago for shots. First thing out of that young vet mouth was not to play tug with him because his a Rottweiler😂. Now we had them for almost 30 years and they all played tug best training tool in my opinion.

Hey Robert, thank you so much for your content. It has helped me with my GSD tremendously. The only problem I have is that he is not motivated for the tug toy. I wasn't able to encourage him when he was a pup. How do you suggest I bring that drive out of him. I know he has it because i've seen it before. Thank you again.

The 'TUG' (command) is NOT a contest. It helps a dog strengthen his confidence and paired with 'out' the dog learns 2 useful commands ! TUG is a natural game for a dog and if he is hesitant... help him by rewarding and encouraging even a bit of interest! Show him how to succeed and be praised !

Great video again Robert! Tug is fun but what exactly are the benefits of playing tug, for the dog and for the owner? It bilds drive, it bilds confidence ( in a let's say an anxious dog), what exactly are the tug playing benefits ? Hi Robert, I learnt so much from the full version on your web site RobertCabral.com. Zed is an avid tug fan. I would have bought your tug but the shipping put it beyond my financial ability sadly. I continue to learn even after 48 years training. Thank you so much for expanding my knowledge : ) I did buy Zed a new tug from the company I get these things from, but as they are not taking phone calls due to the virus issue , I can't get full access to the range. It will be a temporary measure. Zed has always played tug using her molars on a flat tug with 2 handles. Only time she uses front teeth is on a burst soccer ball. Hi there! I love your videos. I have a 5 month german shepherd puppy and your training advice has been a great help. I have a tugging question I would love some help with. As you know german shepherds can be a bit possessive and I can't get my puppy to bring the toy back to me when I let her win it. She will lay down right in front of me and chew on it no matter how much coaxing I do. How can I get her to see that the game is with me and the value is coming back to me to play and not the toy? I have two labs, two and four years old, and the old school bird dog trainers say not to play tug with a bird dog - but I want to. I would like to think at this point that they understand not to tug birds, both have a phenomenal to-hand out - is it realistic for me to play tug with them? How do you stop a malinois from trying to jump up and pulling on the tug/your arms while playing? I adopted an 8-month-old and he loves doing that; he also loves standing on his hind legs and trying to "hug" people, so maybe there's a connection. Perhaps a related issue is he also loves to bite and pull on his leash a lot of times, and it's really hard to get him to let go. It seems his previous owners didn't really do any training with him, so I've been having serious issues teaching him and trying to manage his behavior.

I don't shoot pheasant, but I understand your question. I've taught Duane to retrieve ducks and he knows the difference. I explain this in my member section at robertcabral.com Basically, he is taught when we tug and when we don't. If he comes and I call him to heel, he goes to heel. Basically it comes down to obedience. Out means Out!

My chocolate lab loves playing tug and is not at all interested in playing with a ball or retrieving anything for that matter haha. Also he doesnt want to swim and hes 1 year old now. He only goes as far as he can stand.
