Hero is very graceful, seems like an alpha because he's always trying to take the initiative. He is so very beautiful. Arih, moves with economy--she wastes no extra movement. She's to the point, fast and efficient...as well as a little sassy. 😎 She's also a very intelligent beautiful girl. I just love to watch these two dogs move their elegant bodies and work. Charlie is a super fun sweet dog to watch, he seems so eager to train because he loves it. Just watching Charlie puts me in a good mood. Hey Nate- cannot tell you enough how much we appreciate your vids, so thank you so much! Couple of generally applicable questions for naming the command. I know your method is get dog to understand/perform the behavior well THEN name command by saying it once prior to prompting the behavior. (1) Is there a downside to saying the command once right away (before the dog is comfortable with the behavior) or is it just a matter of it being pointless bc the dog is unaware of what you'd be telling him to do yet? Or do you see it as "diluting" the command because the dog will likely not succeed early on? (2) Some trainers recommend repeating the command WHILE the dog is first learning it to more quickly build association. This seemed to work for us to teach our puppy "pee pee", "poo poo", and "drink" which he now does pretty successfully on command. We just repeated "drink..... drink.... drink..." while he drank, and now he drinks when we say "drink". What are your thoughts on repeating the command word (only while FIRST teaching/introducing) during other duration-type behaviors like HEEL, CENTER, WALK BACKWARDS, etc? Building association or confusing the dog into thinking the command must be continually repeated for him to continue executing the command... or something else? Hope that was clear- thank you for taking the time and again for all your lessons!

Nate I was very successful with "Middle." My command is "Through." I also implemented "Walk" as she is between my legs in the sit position. When I command "Walk" she "Walks" between my legs. Piece of cake Thanks to you. So now going to Walking Backwards. Question Nate. What treats do you give ? Is it the dog's kibbles or something else ? What do you recommend as a reward treat ? I notice you are giving a lot. What are they ?
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
The vital essentials freeze-dried dog food is what I use when I'm training my dogs. Since they are already trained, I don't have to use as many treats. However, with a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with Stella and Chewy's freeze-dried coated kibble. It's great food and most dogs love it! You can see most of the products that I use with my dogs here: www.nateschoemer.com/store I hope this helps! )

I've been able to train my Pomeranian to walk backwards using the 'walk forward into the dog' technique. He does reasonably well but on cue will walk only a certain distance then plants himself in a Sit and refuses to go back any further. Frustrating. Do I need to start retraining, walking into him for a longer distance? My goal is to have him move Back on cue until I tell him to stop. My Pomeranian is 3.5 years old.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. He may think that he only has to walk a certain distance based on what you showed him when teaching the command. You can try adding a stop command while working on the backwards walk. Meaning, give him the backwards walk command and then walk towards him the same way you did when you were teaching the behavior, then before you stop the cue, give a stop command. with enough repetitions, your dog will learn to stop walking backwards only when you give him the command to stop.

I have 2 questions. 1: My dog mouths a lot at the hand with the treat while backing up. When he backs up, I mark and reward by letting him have the treat, but he is mouthing the whole time. He knows leave it, but then he faces away from the hand which makes the backing up more difficult. I am concerned that he will think that mouthing at the hand=treat. Any tips? 2: I would love for this command to be a physical one (hand signal) and for my pup to back up 4-5 steps when the signal is given without actually walking towards them. How would you suggest phasing out the walking towards them so they back up away from you when you give the signal...and could you use this to have them back away from objects? Thank you! As always, love the videos!
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 3 жыл бұрын
1. I would have to see a video to really know what you're doing right and wrong. 2. Once we have our dog performing the action with our physical cue, it is then time to give the behavior a command. The command can be physical or verbal. In order for your dog to learn the command, you must say or perform the command ONCE and then show your dog the physical cue. Don’t make the mistake or repeating the command or saying something like “good sit” after the dog is already sitting, which can send mixed signals to a dog that is already sitting. First be warned: A common mistake that people make is when they decide to link the behavior to a command, they will deliver the command while they are giving the dog the physical cue. If you pair (overshadow) your physical cue with your command as stated earlier, the physical will override the command and become the only cue for the behavior. An example of this could be as simple as saying “Good boy” (or the marker that trainers would prefer, “yes”) simultaneously to feeding the dog the reward. By mixing these two actions together, the verbal marker will not have any relevance in the dog’s mind. If we want the dog to learn the command, then it is important to make sure that the command (verbal or physical) precedes the physical cue by a split second. It must be predictable to the dog. So, the process becomes: command, motivate, mark, and reward, in that order. • First say sit (command). • Then you lift your hand with the treat (motivate). • Once the dog's butt hits the ground, you either give the reward within the first second or you mark and then reward. • You will continue to use the physical cues until the dog beats you to it. Meaning, if you say sit and before you lift your hand-the dog is already sitting. This process is the same even if you want to teach a service dog to perform a specific command based on an involuntary human behavior conducted by the person with the disability. For example, you’re 51 training a service dog to nudge his handler when his handler reaches high levels of stress, such as with a veteran suffering from PTSD. First you would need to figure out what the veteran’s involuntary behavior is. For this example, we will say that the veteran looks up and starts to breathe heavily. Once we know this, then that will become the command for the behavior. The next step would be to present a physical cue that can get the dog to nudge your leg (which will be transitioned to the veteran later), let’s say tapping your own leg works for this dog. Now the process would go as follows: • First look up and breathe heavily (the command). • Then you would tap on your leg to get the dog to nudge your leg (motivate). • Once the dog nudges you, you either give the reward within the first second or you mark and then reward. • You will continue to use the physical cues until the dog beats you to it. Meaning, you look up and breathe heavily and before you tap your leg-the dog is already nudging you.

How do you teach a dog to back up with leash pressure that is stubborn? refuses to move after they are sitting, or act like its the end of the world to have to move.
@NateSchoemer
@NateSchoemer 2 жыл бұрын
First, try to get the dog to walk backward with the food lure. Then use that to help the dog to understand the leash pressure cue. Start with the pressure, then use the lure to get the dog to walk backward. Once the dog walks backward, release the pressure and reward the dog. You can also try keeping your foot under your dog's belly to prevent him from sitting down.

Hey Nate, maybe a bit of a stupid question maybe, but I am at the point that my dog will go back when my hands are closed in between my legs and I am just wondering what physical command do you then shape it to when its finished or almost finished as I don’t want to have to keep doing this one (both hands closed in between legs) and how do I transition to it ? Thanks again for all your great content I have learned so much from you

Hi Vibha! Thanks for the questions. I would suggest starting with teaching your dog the out command. You may need to use the third option of leash pressure demonstrated in the video. When your dog picks up something you don't want him to have, say no or the drop it commands and then implement the leash pressure. This will help keep your hands safe. Once he drops the item, mark, and reward with a treat that he enjoys. Here is the drop it video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5O5e313atysZ7M I hope this helps! :)
