Amen!!!!! I had to use it this past weekend when my younger walker spooked then proceeded to bolt...I will not ride a horse that cannot do a one-rein stop. It is crucial that the animal and rider practice it until it becomes second nature for the rider and the animal gives easily!

I've talked of this often. Its circling your horse to stop it. Ive used it for a bolting horse. Also use the " pulley rein " to stop. This is used on the hunt field at times.

I love this explanation!!! Just a thought, i found it easier to do a one rein stop with a bitless bridle. I got my homie morgan the morgan, and he’s definitely more content when stopping. Thank you for the video!!!

One thing he didn’t mentioned is this is not something you use in the moment you have an emergency if you’ve never done it before, a horse has to be trained to give his head like this. You teach them muscle memory to flex like that and also use your inside leg to tap the rear end over if necessary practice like he is over and over again until the horse anticipates and knows exactly what to do with that rein cue. Then, when your horse suddenly spooks or bolts, you can shut them down instantly before they even gain speed, when they are trying to do this, but you must train in advance.

I don’t have to but I do use spurs with advanced horses to communicate clearly in specific maneuvers.

Can you please tell me what bit you have on him?is it broken in the middle?
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Sure! In this video I think I'm using a D-Ring Snaffle bit. Yes it is broken in the middle and is designed for lateral pulling like the One Rein Stop. You wouldn't want to do a One Rein Stop in a Solid Shank Bit as it would hurt the horse.

What do you do when horse your pulls back if you try to pull. My horse sometimes reacts perfectly. Other times he doesn't want to and pulls his head away
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Good question… it depends on why he’s pulling back… if he’s pulling back because the bit hurts him or something like that then that’s not his fault. Make sure you are using some form of snaffle that is designed for lateral pulling. If he’s just pulling away because he’s being bad then you can try to gently bump twice on the rein pulling him. I even say bump bump out loud. Then try to pull him. Sometimes that helps them remember what to do.
@seneynah3 ай бұрын
One thing this video is not showing is how you reinforce that bend with the leg once he bends his head over then you tap his bottom around because the head is 30%. The bottom is the 70% not all horses naturally move their butt around so you tap with your leg to move their butt around so even if they’re stiff neck, you can still move their bottom and shut down the 70%.

What if you are on a narrow track?
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Two options… hold on until the horse stops and try to steer him in a good direction. Or I would try the one rein stop anyway because in most cases the horse would stop as best he can even on a narrow track. It depends what’s around you! Let’s say you have hedges or walls or fences on both sides-in that case I’m definitely doing a ORS. If you have trees or ditches on either side then try to stop him only after you get to an open area. Hope that helps! 😊
@equine20206 ай бұрын
Use the " pullly rein" method. Brace one hand on the withers, & pull back strongly on the other rein.

That's how your horse can break his legs, or worse
@HorsePerfect Жыл бұрын
Haha horses legs are so strong. It’s also up to the horse how much they stop before you bend their neck around. I’d much rather have a horse with a broken leg than break my own neck if I had to choose. Because this is an emergency only move.

@@HorsePerfect ok than let me ask you this... How do you stop an ex racehorse that doesn't bolt because he got scared but because he just wants to go full speed. Doesn't WANTS to stop. I know the answer because I trained them and I have one myself
