That’s what I’m talking about, straight to the point.

Another good one! I like the faster pacing and you’ve mastered the lighting and equipment. Content is spot on! You two are the Power Couple of the bird dog world!

How do you transition from this to a dog that is willing to release a dead bird? I understand how tug of war is helpful at this stage, but how do you avoid having a dog that "plays" with a bird?

What if it’s already been ingrained in the dog to drop the bumper upon return? How do you go back and retrain to hold? My dads wife taught their lab to immediately release because she hated slobber hahaha. But now he is trying to duck hunt that dog with my GSP and he absolutely will not hold onto it once he’s returned 🤣

Any tips for starting with a 10 month old pup. My lab will go get the dummy but he likes to run off and chew instead of bringing back. If he does bring it back he wants to play keep away.

Basically is there any difference in starting with a 10 month old vs a younger puppy.

Go watch the trained retrieve series. I have seen what it does and how well it works. I plan in using this method my my Brittany when I get back to the states.

YAWA Question: I am currently working on Force Fetching. How many times a week would you recommend working with pups, and do you stop playing fetch during this time? I am currently working on it 6 days a week, twice a day if I can. Is that too much for a 7 month old GSP? Thank You in advance!

Curious if you got any information on this topic as I’m in the same situation. I’ve heard that playing fetch during this time is ok if your dog naturally enjoys retrieving and will not get sick of it. I’m in a tough spot as my pup gets very chewy with the bumpers and birds, so I have put the fetch on hold until force fetch is done(I started 2 days ago doing 2 sessions a day and I’m now introducing the hold cue). Best of Luck with your training

Is it okay to let my birddog puppy play with tennis balls, out side of a training/retrieving setting?
@StandingStoneKennels Жыл бұрын
We don't use tennis balls ever. They will eventually cause a retrieving issue from a hunting/testing standpoint
@egregiousblunder5395 Жыл бұрын
Take away the tennis balls and my two bostons will have a meltdown but the two GSP's will just go retrieve something else lol. I've always used bumpers of all types for our bird dogs since day one, but I do not let them play with them alone or use them as chew toys which a few folks I know have done. Recently my 10 month old GSP male decided to randomly fetch our king sized comforter and drag it all the way down to the living room. Not sure what sparked this, but he just came trotting down with it and left it on my wife who was in the recliner and waltzed off lol.

I’ve read elsewhere that playing tug of war ruins soft mouths.
@StandingStoneKennels Жыл бұрын
If over done it can. Playing with tennis balls great way more mouth issues than any amount of tug. The only reason tug becomes an issue is if it is overdone or you don’t properly teach a release.

Is there a point when you should stop playing tug with your dog?
@MrCabimero Жыл бұрын
Sorry, I am an old man. But I was always taught to never do tug of war. You are only encouraging your dog to hold on to the retrieve object, not release it, and hard mouthing. So I respectfully disagree with the tug of war part. It is easier to teach the right way first rather than unlearn a bad behavior.

you are 100% correct, i couldn't believe they suggested tug of war

Why would I train my puppy to bring a bird to me and play tug-of-war with it? Sounds counterintuitive.
@StandingStoneKennels Жыл бұрын
It’s all about the way you approach tug. Anything overdone is bad. The right about of tug is key to developing a strong natural hold!

It enforces a desire to want to bring whatever it is they are carrying back to you.
