As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

1) I really like your accent :). 2) I've been a subscriber so this isn't the first video of yours I've watched. I just think it is fantastic and also much appreciated how you get right to it and stick with whatever it is that you're training the dog in the video. There are so many dog training videos available online but sometimes there is other fluff that makes me scrub forward a couple min here and there in hopes the person is done and goes back to the point of the video. Thanks for staying right on it and for making each thing you demonstrate easy to follow.

Can you make a video on how to train recall with more enticing distractions? My dog has a nearly perfect recall in the scenario of this video. However when he is off lead and something VERY interesting happens (e.g. a ball, another dog), all recall goes out the window..

I feel like this is a common question for a common issue that has one element that most people experiencing it overlook. The distractions you mention are generally surprises or things the dog owner didn’t plan for. If you know your dogs recall starts to fail when he is distracted by another dog for example, then plan out that scenario and train for it. Introduce the extra dog at a great distance and slowly decrease that distance over time. Introduce a kid bouncing a ball or a cat or whatever at distance, in a controlled manner, not just as a random surprise you have no control over when you are trying to train something else.

thank you so much. I care for my son's labrador three days a week. Due to mobility problems I cant really walk him and distance, and the only place I feel I can take him is to an enclosed dog park. I would love to take him to the beach, an open park etc, but I am too scared he would wander off and I would never get him back. He thinks everything is a game of chasey so I would never catch him once I let him go. Thanks again.

Your training advice really helped me. I've done a lot of work with my dogs over the years and will change some of my approaches to training because of you. I have recently adopted a 3 year old long-haired shepherd who, for the most part, is well trained. He has very good recall in most situations even when he is playing with other dogs. However if play gets too rough or intense I can't get him to break and come back to me and in a few cases it has resulted in a fight breaking out or another owner getting upset with me and my dog. The leave it command works well with everything but squirrels and cats. Are there any training tips for what I'm dealing with because I don't think a long lead in a dog park with lots of dogs will work. Thank you

Is there a video of a training timeline? Like what kind of training comes first and how old the puppy should be, then train on something else , and by the time they’re this age they can do this and that. I’m trying to train my Aussie puppy and I’m just lost on what comes after the next and if he’s too young to really understand some training.

This was a great start for me to do recall work with an adult standard poodle I adopted recently. I really appreciate it a lot, so thank you. There was one thing that bothered me though. It’s that you called out specific breeds as very aggressive dogs. Please don’t do this, it attaches and reinforces the stigma to a specific breed, when the reality is that all dogs are capable of aggression. Any dog with the drive for it is completely capable of chasing down a critter and hurting it. As it happens i previously had a (different) standard poodle and a rottweiler: the poodle is the one I had to watch as he loved chasing rats and rabbits, while the rottweiler would just chase the poodle and ignore the rats. Also, it can potentially set people up to trust animals on sight that maybe are not trustworthy - evidenced by the bite statistics of certain smaller breeds.

excellent video.Dog´s arn´t daft, ours knows when and when she isn´t on a lead and acts accordingly. On a lead, long lead etc recall is perfect. As soon as the lead is of, 95%. is she senses a rodent or hare, no recall on this planet is gonna stop her going after it. Is there an exercise to recall a dog with high prey drive off leash? All "she shouldn´t be off leash" comments are going to be ignored. I live in the middle of the woods, no roads and she eventually comes back after the odd rare excursion.

Just a massive t**t with other dogs when out for walks lol. Also she ALWAYS eats poo, mostly the other dogs but her own too :/ if we don’t get out and pick it up immediately it’s gone, to the point where she is stood behind the other waiting for the business to happen

Going to use these techniques with my lab that has a weak recall. We did a lot of baiting with food early on and he definitely chooses not to come unless we have a treat. We have been using the slip lead with our new puppy and definitely night/day difference. I am planning on working with a trainer on how to properly condition and use an ecollar for both my dogs. I really enjoy the balance method so far as strictly positive has had some drawbacks. Love your videos!

I love Puppy!! :) In another video you were using the clicker. It seems that the same principle applies with both the "Puppy come" and "clicker" that the initial training for recall means, 1) get the dog's attention and 2) when the dog started to come to you (or whatever behavior) you either click or say "Puppy come/heal/etc" to reinforce the behavior. Is that correct?

As always a great video! I thought my 7 month old Tamaskan had amazing recall by 4 months but instinct is kicking in a lot and he loves to meet other dogs. Although saying that, when we go to obedience class and he's working he's amazing again. I know others have asked about the slip lead but I only see the normal length slip lead and the training leash on the website. The training leash doesn't look like a slip lead, do you use a combo of both or is the long slip out of stock?

what happens if your dog is not motivated by treats outside how do you do training like you're doing without providing treats I just don't understand I've tried everything I can she seems to get it a couple times and then all of a sudden she's back to being distracted all over again??
@erinlikesacornishpasty4703
@erinlikesacornishpasty4703 6 ай бұрын
It helps to teach your dog to focus on you before you teach recall. Your dog will understand they have to pay attention to you when you issue a command more consistently that way. Start teaching recall in very low distraction areas, like inside your home. I started just asking my puppy to come to me from various places in the house, then moved to my back yard, and only then started recall out in the neighborhood (on a long lead). If your dog doesn't seem motivated by food, use toys. You can use anything your pup finds motivating, even praise and petting work. I didn't think my dog was motivated by food either when I first got her, but I discovered she will do ANYTHING for chicken or frozen blueberries. It also helps to pay very close attention to when your dog IS focused on you outside, so you can mark and reward that immediately. I usually just say "yes, good dog" but whenever she's close to me and looks at me I offer treats too. You'll figure it out eventually 😊.

@@gaborsvagrik4754 I think most trainers use what is easier or common: dogs -> treats. I wouldnt blame the trainers (only) for that. many ppl. are just impatient and want their dog to "function" right away. or are just lazy, sorry but that is a huge part of the truth. this is also the sad reason why you see many trainers using e-collars or prong collars. by that dogs are forced or even hurt to do things. yes, it may work but this is not a way I would use. btw: I am not a trainer, just a regular guy with very little dog experience (had 2 dogs so far). thank you very much for your kind words 🙏

Not sure what is an e collar if it was or is a small pulse and not painful I would see no problem but if it is painful then a no . In my view I see a little discomfort as not painful we all can know this we all have had that annoying thing that you want to stop but it’s not too bad. So I don’t know if this goes into that category don’t know enough about the thing he is using.

@@janegarnhamecollars are not painful. There are usually two settings now, a vibrate and a beep. They are not "shock collars". There used to be an electronic collar that came out in the 80s I think that did actually zap your dog. My family had one of those that was paired with an electric fence, so when our family dog got near the fence she got a light zap. We used it for two weeks to teach her not to run into the busy road on one end of our 8 acre property, and I truly think it probably saved her life. It had a similar jolt to the electric fences we uses to fence in our horses, which was unpleasant to touch, but never so hot it burned or marked skin. The ecollars we can get now aren't anything like that even. I suppose people are just traumatized from the old style and think a dog should never experience any discomfort. Let me tell you, I was much more glad my family's dog got an occasional zap for a couple weeks than got hit by a logging truck.

Would have been far more convincing if you let her off of the leash.

This may seem a silly question, but what are you using for the reward food? They must be tiny treats, something that she likes. FYI, I bought a slip leash and I love it. My Kimmie must like it too, when I lower the loop she puts her head in there, no complaints.

I am losing my mind with recall. My 8 month old black American lab will listen to no recall.... I am disabled and she is super smart and HELLA food driven .. thank god... I am going to try your tips and I'm praying this works. 😂😂😂😂 She is aging me hahahahaha ..... I want her to enjoy off leash but right now she's dragging her lead behind her so I have some chance to bring her back...

Nice work Will. My 7 month old Akita still thinks 'recall' is a matter of negotiation......I will be starting this method with him as soon as I can.

I'm grateful to the excellent dog trainer I studied under for teaching all of us that 'recall' is the most important 'command' you train so when I brought my current, incredible GSD puppy home the first thing I did was train his name and the next was 'recall' which we do EVERYDAY and which he gets a treat EVERY time he 'returns!!" It is really paying off!!!

So helpful! But are we going to have to carry treats around with us everywhere? How do we get them to come and not have to give them a treat?

As a R+ trainer myself, your using negative reinforcement with pressure on lead. Why would you then use a shock collar??
