I am a welder, good advice on a lot of it.. but also good to note that you push your puddle a lot..mig is forgiving, but best way to learn is to do it... dont jump ahead of the puddle and dont think of what you are going to do even an inch ahead, keep your mind on what the puddle is doing then and there...good video......

@@jaymanxxxx He just explained how it's done, give it a shot, that's what they teach in trade school. You can practice all you want, but if you pick up bad habits, all that practice will be useless. Typical of what most people that learn on their own, I been there. But there are some that are just naturals at it.

Great video as always. Personally I prefer straight c02 over 75/25. It seems to burn hotter and it’s cheaper and more readily available to buy. Another thing to consider is that any time you leave your puddle like in the whip and pause style, it introduces contaminants in to your weld. The shielding gas protects the molten metal from the air around it. The best method is your “C” technique. Manipulating the puddle side to side, pausing briefly at each side to ensure proper fusion. Always staying in front of your puddle. Circles can trap slag and other contaminants in the weld also, compromising the structural integrity.

I’m very much a hobbyist, I look up to weekend warriors as my status is so low. So far I’ve successfully hard faced a cheap anvil with stick welding I was quite proud of and mig welded a router table which even impressed my wife. For me as a rank amateur I’ve quickly learnt that 90% of my welding occurs before I even switch the machine on, it’s all about clean and tidy surfaces. I’ve also become quite proficient with a grinder and my cheap spray gun. If you’re bald buy the bonnet, it’s friggin painful getting spatter on your dome. I’m still using the big heavy gloves, I know a lot of more skilled welders prefer the tig gloves but I’m not confident enough yet. Great video, thank you.

Cheers Nate..I must have missed this episode and just found it whilst looking for welding projects that I might try and do soon. Just bought myself an industrial welder for almost nothing and now working through some issues(hence why it was a 'steal'..) Up to now been flux core welding which has been an 'education' especially as it was bought from a 'German owned grocery chain' as a discretionary purchase years ago. I'm not sure it has done me any favours but I did weld up the rear end on my Land Rover and have melted a fair few good things with it. Anyhoo back to the present day and you now have a different 'shop' and home and still pursuing your dreams...keep up the great work if you see this one day..Be safe

Nice job great mig welding basics video! There are actually some good 110 welders out there. Most of the time yes 220 is definitely better and more convenient, but I mean my 110 Forney can burn 1/4” in a single pass no problem with great penetration. I’ve used this welder to fabricate many parts for my truck including a headache rack out of 1/8” & 1/4” steel. Bumpers out of 1/4”, plus 3/8” where they mount to the frame. 1/8” side steps. A handful of different brackets. Some 3/16” skid plates. A few other little things. And I am now working on a brush guard using 3/16” & 1/8” wall tubing & 1/4” plate. And a stainless steel auxiliary fuel tank. Its been a great machine I have accomplished a ton with this welder without *ever* overheating it. In my opinion it is perfect for the moderate welder like myself.

I'm glad you said this! Cause it's exactly what I was thinking. I have a Hobart Handler 140 that's 110v and it's been doing a great job on C-notches in lowered truck frames, and I've been burning together a 3/16" plate off-road bumper for my '72 Jeep CJ-5! It hasn't let em down yet, and was nice to get when 220v wasn't an option for me to get access to.

that's what I do when I weld with my mig. I go in small circular motions, and when I'm trying to fill a gap I use the C motion back and forth from side to side, and it does a good job of adding material to a space; you're basically just building on the weld material as you cross a gap and drag the puddle as you go as you say. I usually only use the back and forth motion when I'm stick welding. When I was 15, that was 41 years ago, I started out on brazing steel with Oxy/Acetylene, I had to start on a flat piece of 1/8th steel, and when I was able to make a nice uniform bead, I was allowed to advance to brazing two pieces of steel in a T shape. I had to braze 4 layers; the first in the corner; the second on top and the third on the bottom of it and them I had to make a beautiful laced bead over it all. Only after I had mastered that, which took a week of going to class every night for a couple of hours, was I allowed to move to stick welding, and I had to start with a flat weld on some 1/8" steel laying a bunch of beads next to one another, and only after I had then looking beautiful filling a 3x5" plate with perfect beads was I allowed to advance to vertical welding, and I was hung up on that for about a week when a piece of slag got behind my safety glasses, and I had patches over my eyes for 2 weeks. I never went back and finished the course, and I wish my dad had pushed me to go back and finish. I've been wanting to get back into doing it, so I can do some things and I started out with a HarborFreight Chicago 125 flux welder, it's only 125 volt, I'm really motivated to get a real mig welder that uses 250v and gas 75/25. The Chicago welder is okay for very little! I was really thinking about getting a Lincoln multi process welder until I saw you using the Miller. I'm not sure what your Miller ran you, but Lincoln has a basic multi process welder for around 1,400.00 dollars; capable of Mig, Tig and stick welding, and they have one that is nearly 6,000.00. I'm way too rusty to even think about spending 6K on one lol, but watching you build the rack for you 3500 RAM really inspired me to make a smaller version for my Chevy Silverado 1500 WT. Because I would really like to put a rooftop tent on it and get out to the lake this summer and do some fishing! I grew up fishing as a kid; because mom loved to fish, so I have some really great memories of camping at the Desoto Ben lakes up North when we lived in Nebraska, and even at some of the small lakes down in Oklahoma. you really do some great welding, in my humble opinion, for whatever it's worth. Thanks for sharing all the how to videos. I like the round tubing you use for racks and bumpers. It gives a nice look. I liked the way the rack on your Land Rover turned out. The dimple dies give a nice look while adding a little strength. That's new for me, I didn't know it was making things lighter while adding strength. Really learning a lot from your channel, so thanks for sharing all the projects!

Nice starter plan! I bought my welder while I was still driving and it sat in the shop brand new waiting for me to get some time off. When I did get anytime it was either the reset hrs for my log book ( 36hrs) , and I was so wasted from running the miles. But then I ended up in a wreck and suffered a head injury and found out real quick the simple things I knew from childhood were hard to do. My head just couldn't wrap around and tell my hands to hold things. Even trying to tell my son's how to do the task was futile and so frustrating. It took 6 months of retraining my head to allow me to get outside and work on a car trailer I bought. I found out quick I'm a 2 handed welder...lol Nerves make my hands shake so I have to hold on to get any kind of nice welding done. The boys just sit back and let me work on it for a while and when I take a break they step in and finish it. They keep saying to upgrade to a better machine, but I keep saying show me more welding first. I really do want to get into the Miller brand, but we are limited in space for projects. I'm looking into getting the gas to get better welds with our little machine. Love the video and all the stuff you are creating for your vehicles. Saw this J20 and thought of yours it's called ROAMR.

You can still find good deals now & then on Craigslist for used mig welders. Most of the time, people seem to think their welder is worth just as much as the day they bought it 22 years ago, but sometimes you'll see someone who just upgraded and wants the space in their shop or garage so you get a deal if you can catch it.

I like brazing and JB Weld for thin steel body panels, and making thick steel brackets that bolt together with grade 8 bolts where possible. See the Project Farm KZbin videos for maintenance tips for vehicles. For a hobbyist, welding thick steel might be best to hire out, because of the cost of the equipment and the time to have enough experience. In college the teacher had us weld 2 thick steel plates together, then he put one side in a big vise and hit the other side with a big sledgehammer. If the weld bent instead of breaking it was good.

Nice video. I've come to learn over time that the "whip" or forward back and the "C" technique ( if making the "C" back into the puddle instead of forward on the leading edge) can and usually do cause cold lap and lack of fusion. Also, anything over 3/16" should really be welded uphill, if it's structural. Like the channel!!

The best way is to go to trade school, I thought I was good after 5 years learning on my own, but nothing beats taking classes. Don't get me wrong this tutorial will get you going with great results for the weekend warriors at home, the guy is a good teacher. I got lucky my employer sent me to school. I work for Recology repairing anything any everything from beat-up debris boxes to the cabs of the trucks and delicate recycling conveyor belt machines. I feel so lucky because I love my job.

I'll show up to my buddy's house and they've been welding, what a catastrophe and ofcourse they've been boozing and ofcourse I'll be like: clean this crap up and take it apart, I'll be right back and I'll weld it all up for them but I ask my self, why do people think they can weld without practicing? Good video bro

Cool! In part two, can you go over welding thicker metal to, well, cheese - aka frame stiffeners to the cherokee frame? That's the one I've been practicing - and man there's a huge challenge there with poking holes (I'm basically using 3/16s and sheetmetal)

Auto darkening lids are awesome, but i do not recommend the Harbor Freight ones. I had one for a while, and it quick working after a while. It would darken, but not as much as it should. I guess maybe the knob that adjusts the darkness quick because i had it maxed out.

Thats good info and ways to do horizontal welds. It is the vertical welds that are harder and usediffernt pattern. That is true with stick welding and same done with the Mig horizontal welding works with stick. SO ???
