True. I'm a 2a advocate, but also a gun safety advocate. I was in a client's home and he had a revolver and pistol sitting on a tray next to the sofa. They had bullets all over the living room. I pointed out how dangerous that is, and someone in their apartment complex can see the firearms through the open windows. Too easy to obtain them. His high school kids would sometimes have to move a firearm to sit on the sofa, or to use a tray to eat a snack. Mine is legal and quickly accessible for me. It requires a combination code, and knowing where it is stored. I do not allow any kids near it. Even when I clean it and I know I checked it's empty I treat it like it's loaded, and never point towards others. Safety and protecting yourself and family and friends are all important.

The parents stating that their child has an “acute disability” and didn’t have an “adult” that day during school is no excuse for their negligence. As a gun owner, your first priority is to make sure the pistol is safely contained in a lock box out of reach of children AND the ammo stored away SEPARATELY. Parents need to be held accountable.

This leads to how and when can "children" be held accountable for their crimes (even if they can't be punished by law yet, but they shouldn't be let loose unpunished without the following countermeasures). Until at what age can a human still be regarded as a child even though they already know what is wrong and right from as early as even kindergarten age (if nurtured correctly). No child is truly innocent anymore as they grow faster with today's easy to operate technology and whatnot.

It doesn’t help that we are setting up children for failure by being mad at them and blaming their problems on them when quite frankly it’s the parents that need to be held accountable for their children’s actions and behavior in school, too many parents out there are expecting teachers to do all of the work for them including parenting their own children but when it gets to a point to where their children are disciplined or held accountable for their actions that’s when the parents get upset about the teachers parenting their own children when they can’t be bothered to do it and that’s why the teacher Hass to Intervine. There are teachers out there who care about the children that they are teaching but then you deal with Bum parents who think that the teachers job also includes teaching their child to be a good person, these parents, all they’re good for is making the kid and then going off and doing their own thing and crying about how hard they have it but not taking into consideration the impact their actions are having on their child who had no choice being born. this is why abortion needs to be legal and encouraged. Exactly! This is almost as bad as the Crumbley parents in Oxford, Michigan, who not only failed to secure the gun that their son used to murder 4 classmates, but actually bought the gun for the child as a gift, took him to practice with it at the gun range - and then emptied out their bank accounts and tried to skip town once the son was in jail. We need safe storage laws across the country, with significant penalties that actually deter people from being careless about storing their firearms. Not something wimpy like a $50 penalty or having to do community service, but something with teeth like a $50,000 penalty plus a mandatory one year jail sentence. Firearms should be locked up when not being used by the licensed owner for hunting or target practice or another allowed activity, so that the firearms cannot be accessed by unsupervised children or other individuals who should not have weapons. And if a firearm is allegedly missing or stolen, it needs to be reported to the local authorities within 24 hours, or else the owner should be held liable for any crimes committed with that weapon by the alleged thief.

It's not an uncommon occurrence for teachers to be dismissed by administration. So many principals and other admins are terrified of potential backlash from parents. Those running the schools need to wake up, grow a backbone, and listen to teachers who voice concerns about potentially dangerous students. From what I've heard about the child involved, he was a danger to everyone in the classroom even before the gun incident. Some kids have severe issues and shouldn't be mainstreamed into a traditional classroom. Shame on the administration and the parents and prayers for physical and emotional healing for that poor teacher.

My dream as a kid was to be a teacher. I had kids early and never went to school. When my youngest was in 1st grade his teacher (20+ years with the district) was frazzled daily. I ended up as her “parent helper..aka unpaid teachers aid) and I did alll the things she had no time for…which kept me busy alllll day long and even after school. The things she had to pay for out of her own paycheck was disgusting (we lived in a very sought after district) and I spent HUNDREDS of dollars out of my own pocket that year. Seeing what she went through broke my heart. I spent an entire year with her and the kids (I had to have fbi clearance and child clearances to even go on a trip with my kids so I was permitted to come help. I also paid for it out of my own pocket). After that year she made a joke that “if you leave, I quit!”. She knew I was leaving and we had a home purchased out of state months before moving. She messaged me just a few weeks later and she had handed in her resignation and was retiring. I don’t blame her. Admin was a freaking joke and unapproachable. They did not care about the teachers, parents or what went on, only about their own get together and keeping the schools name in good standing. Rude and condescending are how I would have marked them day 1. It got worse as the year went on. It made me thankful that I never got my teaching degree. It’s sad but true. You said it all right there! I love being a teacher. We all do! But we can't be the kind of teachers that ALL of our students need and deserve when the majority of our days are occupied with trying to manage the special behavior needs of one or two or five students. It's not fair to the rest of the kids. We need alternative placements for students who can't function in a general ed setting for an entire school day. It's also not fair to those special needs students to put them in a room with only one teacher where they are expected to be in control of themselves all day if they have special behavioral problems. When they become dysregulated they need a place they can go with an adult who can help to regulate them. I'm grateful that I work at a school where our resource teachers help us classroom teachers with these special needs kids. If it weren't for them, so many of us would have probably already taken stress leave or quit years ago.

He should have sat in the front office until a parent arrived to pick him up! The Parents need to be charged as well! My heart goes out to the teacher and those students! With "inclusive classrooms" it basically means to put all the kids in the same room together (by law). Many times the law will not allow separate classrooms anymore because they are supposed to have "equal access" to education for all. It becomes a game of twister where they end up bending over backwards so much that they will eventually collapse on itself like this situation.

YEP! This is why guns need to be outlawed!! The founding fathers only put the 2nd Amendment in place because back then that was the ONLY way they would be able to prevent their country turning into the way England was, back then. But as of today, the 2nd Amendment is obsolete. And there are too many stupid people in this country and world and guns only gives them power to inflict their unstable emotions on to others. There is so many technological advancements of other non-lethal weapons, on the market, that people can use to protect themselves with. A gun is not the only way to do it. New Zealand and Australia have already outlawed guns, entirely and since banning them, they've had ZERO mass shootings in their country. ZERO! There's been on average only about 10 shootings PER YEAR in their countries. ONLY 10!! THE ENTIRE YEAR and that's by the "criminals". BUT there has been NO school shootings, NO public mass shootings! That just goes to show that the only TRUE solution to put a stop to these gun violence and mass shootings, is to get rid of the guns!!

Even rich kids act up, bully and do horrible things as well. The problem is adults believing in this delusional ideology that children are "inherently good". It’s so sad that teachers are not getting much support. Last year was my first year teaching and I was also pregnant. I had a student that would destroy (I mean destroy) my classroom and would hit the other students. We had to evacuate 3 times a day. He once hit my belly and I had to go to the hospital just to make sure my baby was ok. The principal would tell me that he had to be in class because he has to learn and wouldn’t allow to not have him in class. That same day the student was hitting my para and I (both pregnant). We both we’re protecting each other by covering our bellies. The principal was just watching and took him like 2 minutes to take the kid with him. We were told that we could not touch the kid, look at the kid or say anything to the kid. I hated my first year and wanted to quit. I felt like unheard and had no support. I was depressed and sometimes I could start crying while driving to work or driving home, or if I saw the mom’s car because I knew the kid was at school. Also the mom was no help. She would say that the students and I bullied him and all he was doing was defending himself. This year is so much better. New principal and I feel heard. But still schools/districts need to figure things out and LISTEN to warnings that are given.

This is just a very bizzare and horrible situation. It's pretty much a given that if somebody having possession of a gun is even *insinuated* by students or staff, regardless if there's actually a gun or not, the school *has* to go into lockdown. The fact that the kid was reported to be dangerous three times and *nothing* was done is alarming at best.

She's damm lucky. She got shot in the shoulder. The shoulder has lots of vital/mortal target-points. The sub-clavian artery and vein - normally are protected by the collarbone, in a fist-fight or a knife-fight, but that won't stop a bullet. Someone who gets hit there is 60% likely to bleed out before he gets to the ER.

I had a conversation with several elementary school teachers before this happened and they had complained to the admins about a child who repeatedly had been physically violent towards another child (put her in choke hold) but the admins refuse to remove from him the classroom or expel him. It’s insane - I’m hoping this event will be a wake up call.

What stuns me is that children, especially a 6 year old, don't even comprehend death, let alone the repercussions of shooting a gun. Hell, I remember in 4th grade that we had a couple police officers come in for gun safety back in late 2003 at school. They would describe an unfortunate scene of a child handling a gun and accidentally shooting a victim (a parent in this scenario) in a serious manner. Sadly, most of my classmates, who were 10 year olds, interpreted the recreational scene by the police officers as a joke, because the only experience and reference to people they knew of getting shot were cartoons and video games, so they laughed. If 10 year olds cannot comprehend the legitimacy of how dangerous guns are, I cannot imagine what was going through the mind of the 6 year old and the ramifications of the psychological aftermath. Although, the real question here is, how the hell was he able to obtain the gun? If one of his parents owned that gun, they should be held accountable. Also, blaming a disability on a 6 year old within this context isn't going to work. Even if the child was neuro-typical, the parents should have been smart enough to put the gun out of reach and out of mind to prevent access. This is just pure negligence from every angle, both from the parents and the school administration.

Most school districts have a protocol which states that the teachers CANNOT just contact Law Enforcement, Child Protective Services, etc... and MUST tell the Principal, etc etc. This rule is even in most Early Childhood Education policies.....
