My mom always kept my hair in beautiful elaborate styles, but while she was in the hospital my dad had to do my hair and he couldn’t even manage a ponytail. I went to school feeling horrible, my homeroom teacher saw me and asked, “what happened to your hair!”. I did my best to explain the situation, but I burst into tears. Teachers "teach" more than just academics. They teach self-esteem and aspiration. This little girl probably went home feeling like a million bucks. Parents should swallow their pride and express gratitude for a dedicated teacher.

Why can't the girl have self esteem while her hair is in a messy afro? True self esteem is not dependent on looks, so the fact we're assuming this boosted herself esteem...it could have created shame of her original hair style where she had no shame originally. This is why so many black women cover their hair. We're taught from childhood it's only acceptable when "done."

I was extremely grateful and so was my husband. Sure, this could be a case of a neglectful parent. But it could also be something much more going on in that child’s life. We just don’t know. Nah hun. Imma have to disagree. "Villages" don't feel it necessary to POST BEFORE & AFTER PICS ON THE INTERNET. THEY JUST DO THE DEED WITHOUT THE NEED FOR ACCOLADES. The fact that she did a "BEFORE PIC" shows that she had an ulterior motive. If that's something she felt NEEDED TO BE DONE, she should've just done it & kept it between her, the child & mother. Furthermore, that is not within her scope of being an educator to take it upon herself & start styling the hair of one of her students. If she was concerned about the child's personal hygiene/or grooming, she should've CONTACTED THE PARENT *FIRST* before playing beauty shop & reaching for compliments. There's a difference between a "village" & reaching for recognition. Clearly, this teacher wanted to be NOTICED AS THE MARTYR. What other reason would she broadcast this PUBLICLY for the entire world to see, violating both the child & mother's private issues? And of course, we have the gullible ones who see only one side (the teacher's) & automatically begin bashing the mother's parenting. I'm not sure where she got her training, but she should've been reprimanded for this stunt. Social media & your underage students are *OFF LIMITS* . That was a PRIVATE MATTER & should've been handled accordingly. If I worked for the school board & this got back to me, she would've been placed on probation expeditiously followed by an apology to the child's mother. This was BEYOND UNPROFESSIONAL.

As a parent, I am appreciative when the teacher thinks of my child enough to make sure they are clean and neat when they return. I could not stand picking my child up from preschool seeing milk and food was still all over their face. Their clothes and hair looked as though they rolled in dirt. My worst head was a student who refused to allow her mom to brush or comb her hair, mom was Caucasian and she was Biracial so her hair texture was very curly and got matted easily, I did her hair monthly and sure enough I would have to take out the same style i put in every time. I have had times where I had to wash kids hair because it was so nasty and Im talking about 1yrs olds and all. Some parents are out here struggling. I hope this one was appreciative.

@@muadhnate my daughter wears her afro to school lots of time. Kids pick when it's in an afro or braids because it isn't straight. I had three of my primary school teachers do my hair, it happened a few times but I loved it. It wasn't that embarrassing. My mum wasn't able to do my hair properly anymore due to sight loss and she's a diabetic. She used to sleep a lot and didn't have much energy. I vividly remember all three of them standing around little me, making me feel really good with my hair plaited up nicely and beautiful golden beads that made a lovely sound everytime I shook it. I was so so happy with them, I couldn't stop beaming from ear to ear. My mum was very thankful too. They really looked after me as if I was their own child.

Her teacher showed her love because she was showing the child her worth in the eyes of God! It doesn’t make sense to claim pride because you don’t know what is going on in the child’s life! I had a friend who was a class aide who did that for several of her children who were residents of a shelter and the shelter had a waiting list! If you didn’t make it fast enough then they would pay fare and sleep on the train! A child asked if she could do her hair because she wanted to be like the other kids! And she asked her why! The child told her that she knew they had a place to live because if they slept on the train she just had to come as is and it was no better at the shelter because families were required to leave by 5:30 am! If their families had time enough to do their hair then they had a place that they could be in all day! The more intricate styles can run to hours to do! You don’t carry anything excessive since depending on the rules you can only stay a week or a month the entire year! So many wouldn’t carry comb, brushes, beads, shampoo etc! Blessed be the teacher who realizes teaching involves more than teaching one plus one! It also includes building self esteem and pride in yourself!

When I worked at a daycare, there was a little 1yr old girl whose hair was so long that it would get in her eyes. Because I would take my daughter to work since 7am. I almost always had a brush & elastics to get her hair done once we would arrive. I tied the little girl’s hair up several times before being told by the director to stop because the parents complained. One time I forgot to bring my stuff to my daughter’s hair. Her teacher (who was Mexican, like I am) braided her hair into a traditional Mexican hairstyle. I couldn’t stop thanking her for that because my braiding skills then were subpar compared to hers.

I had a student who kept getting in trouble in the hallways and other classes for having her hood up. Her mother had died in September, and nobody was doing her hair in the morning. She didn’t complain to her dad because she felt like he was going through enough with his grief and the change in finances. I put together a hair kit and gave it to her one morning. (I had her first period.) We had an understanding. I would send her to the school resource person at the beginning of class, and she would come back about 15 minutes later with her hair done. (In the beginning, she wasn’t comfortable mentioning it to her homeroom teacher who was a very nice white man.) The resource officer and I had made a pact that we were NOT going to let baby girl get made fun of or fall through the cracks. She eventually had to transfer to a school that was closer to where her dad worked. She took selfies with us on her last day. I’ll admit that every time that I look at the photo, I wonder how she and her brother are. And I send up a prayer for them. Did I ask permission before doing it? No. Was I willing to get “in trouble” for helping this child? Absolutely. Would I do it again in these circumstances? Absolutely. But I wouldn’t have taken before and after photos. That seems wrong to me, unless the child is older and requested it herself on her phone. There’s no reason why the teacher would have the photos. It’s about the child, not about the hair.
