It was an uphill struggle when I was an NQT QTS, trying to introduce this approach in which I had been freshly trained, into inner-city schools, back in the mid-90s. The deeply ingrained status quo in deprived catchment areas was teaching to the textbook with the translation method. It was almost impossible to 'buck the trend' because of the inconsistency within departments. Deflated would be an understatement.

By lowering pass grades
