One time, some girl in my class said something along the lines of: “I don’t have to go to the principals office because I actually have money!” The teacher was pissed. She got sent to detention anyway. I saw her a couple years ago and suprise suprise she’s a teacher. Turns out, her parents kicked her out when she turned 18. They were super rich and she got nothing out of it.

I put myself here, with an embarrassing story: I told my first grade teacher that I did not need to learn to read because I'd never read a book. At the time I was sure I'd never read a book.😅 Now I love reading and tested college level in writing and literature and my hobby is writing and reading books. All I can do is laugh at myself. LOL.

When I was an upperclassman in college, I saw a freshman studying for a midterm I had already taken from the same prof. I decided to be nice and started talking about prof’s class and mentioned that I had already taken that and asked how his studying was going thinking that I was being nice reaching out to the new kid on the block. His response was to ask me what I got on it and after I said that I got an A, he told me that it must have been an easy test. I was shocked and walked away. The program we were in had a 50% drop out rate after the first year. He actually got kicked out of the program.

oh 100%. I had the same issue when I went to take my placement test for college. Despite having been in every single advanced math course in private school, I placed as low you possibly could. Private schools don't teach you crap. They shelter you and feed you a bunch of religious and political BS. Then charge 5 figures a year.

Public schools are almost necessarily better than the others. Even at the roughest, least funded public schools, at least they still teach evolution and generally keep their hands off the students.

Actually, the direct translation just says that Jesus' father was a man who worked with his hands. The original Hebrew text never specified exactly which profession the man had. Saying that he's a carpenter was an assumption that was made when the Bible was first translated from Hebrew.
@HannahSiemer
@HannahSiemer 16 күн бұрын
I think they apply still stands, though, Carpenter, or no, many jobs that require working with her hands, also require an intuitive understanding of space, distance, and measurement. They may not be able to write out the exact equation, but they generally don’t have to, It’s only being in intuitively now, or just learned overtime and experience.

My old boss as well as my apprenticeship coordinator thought I was being incredibly pretentious by asking for an entire two-year course upfront so that I could "smash it out in a week". the coordinator gave it to me with a smug look on his face and clearly expected me to fall short. I did the entire course in one weekend without studying and received some of the highest scores on that course that year (didn't get the highest because I messed up one equation, simple human error). The coordinator accused me of cheating to which I responded with "Test me now". He flicked through the books and recited random questions which I answered correctly off the top of my head. After about 20 minutes of him trying to trip me up and failing I eventually let him know that I was a technical rep in this exact field for years and only needed the piece of paper to prove that I knew what I claimed to know. He called BS and said that I must have been cheating since he couldn't answer the questions as quickly and easily as me and I directed him to the back page which listed my name as one of the contributing authors. Of course, I knew the test without studying, I helped write the damn thing!

I was teaching college calculus. At the beginning of every semester, I spend a couple weeks reviewing prerequisite material. The very first day is spent on linear functions. Understanding linear functions is a basic prerequisite for any calculus - *everything* in calculus builds on top of them, and they're significantly simpler than anything else we cover. At the end of this first day, I had a student come up and ask me "When are we going to get to _real_ Calculus? I'm _very_ good at Calculus, but this linear function stuff is just confusing."

I’m not a teacher but wanted to share nonetheless. I don’t know how but from middle school through high school, there was always one student in math mostly different every time. That would lose it at some point in the year, usually either over a particularly hard test or hard chapter of the year. During said test or chapter when they snapped, would always scream along the lines of f*ck this, there’s no point we won’t use this in the real world (what our teachers always called life after school) and stormed out and never come back to the class again. It usually left everyone that was still in class shocked even the teachers, because it would always be someone who never showed any signs of having trouble. I still have no idea what happened to those kids to this day, but I hope they ended up getting help back then.

I go to a school in the middle of nowhere in Southern Arizona in a very poor education system where the bus rides go along bumpy roads and are usually hella long. Worst part being, my bus would be 10+ minutes late to every stop EXCEPT mine, which was even more hella annoying. I have anxiety, emotional and anger special needs alongside autism and I was put into a mainstream class, all because I was good at math, so every day in that class I would flip over and throw every single desk and complain about how the school was ruining my life. They put me in the special ed class and moved me to the special ed bus, and hired an autism counselor, which has helped me very much.

Classmate "Jobs that involve me-cleaning of any kind, waiting tables, delivering food, driving people, or any of those kinds of jobs-are all beneath me." The girl was about 18; this was our last year, and we could practically hear her yelling at one of our counsellors through the closed door. We were in VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning; I'm from Australia), which focuses on 1. Getting an apprenticeship or traineeship 2. Further training at TAFE 3. Getting a job She wanted to make thousands of dollars by barely working. We joked that she was going to work in a gentleman's club or as a "high-class date." I don't know what happened after graduation.

The only time I was ever seen as "pretentious" is when I would sleep through my CPR and first aid class, why? Because I had taken life guarding the first half of that same year (learned CPR and got an unneeded crash course in first aid in that class), teach pulled me into the hall to do a demo on what we learned for CPR and was surprised when I actually knew what I was doing 😅 safe to say I kept my grade up in that class with relative ease and she would let me sleep (was only in that class for the easy credit anyway)

I was the pretentious student. In college, I had to take a world cultures music course as a general ed class. It wasn’t for music majors, as I was in the Education program. I had received a music composer program for my computer for Christmas, as that was what I liked doing in my spare time. The first half of the semester was basic music theory (what a quarter note is, etc). So I didn’t pay attention and was just writing a concerto. The teacher pulled me aside and asked me what I was doing with headphones in in her class. I showed her my work. She was surprisingly cool with it, so long as I sat in the back and finished it to show her before we moved on to talking about music around the world, which was when she said I actually needed to pay attention. She also told me not to show up for the first exam, which I was surprised at-the concerto would be the exam, as she liked it. I completed it, but I lost the file a year later when my computer crashed which has me pissed to this day

there was a girl in my abstract algebra class who thought she was all that, but math is pretty hard and especially so if it's your first time seeing the way math is expressed with set theory, logic, theorems and all that formal math-y stuff. she was arguing with the professor in just about every class for the first few weeks until about a month in when she started to admit that she had no idea what was going on, and then she ended up dropping later on. i honestly felt pretty bad because she was pretty proud person and i watched her confidence crumble under a class that (imo) isn't even close to the hardest topic you'll see in math

well shit I feel like an asshole cause I kinda did something like that.... and I did back up my points the class felt annoying, but it may have just been my first semester so I didn't get it... I'm, not a fan of online schooling on the most part. for those wondering the place of this story, ( 10:41 ). It was an introduction into computer science, and a one of the final papers, but Yeah... I also believe I got a b can't check it now cause time passed. so I'm kinda worried that was actually me and for how much of an ass I was. but I did believe I followed the prompt... forgot what they were but yeah. I'm kinda an idiot but I do try my best to understand as much as I can. If they ever see this or if I am not them still sorry to the teacher, I did have sorry for being an ass, I didn't hate you but I did feel the class could've been handled better. You deserve better.

I could think that far ahead at 14, but again at 14 I was a little bit of a nutcase, always have been. Blind due to originate condition and was always hot, but because of my blindness, the world was going to be kind of terrified of me, didn’t fully understand until college, when actually found people who were terrified at me, but the point has been driven home fairly, surely by the time I was in grade school, early grade school. I think it was partly because I had to struggle so hard just to keep up. No, my problem was, still is to a degree, shutting up and not having to explain to people how intelligent I am and understanding that they will see how intelligent I am. Because of the time no one believe me. It’s almost like I had Janet from Magic School Bus in my head yelling. “prove it!“ I was also taught not to denigrate anyone, especially those who have jobs that seem menial, because sometimes people with many jobs actually get paid more than those are college degrees. I still have a lot of handyman, my grandfather actually had a very good existence without having a college degree, he was a machinist and electrician. But that’s because I was taught that everyone deserves some Monica respect until they start being disrespectful, so I don’t know what that tells you.

Not a teacher, but this happened twice from two separate girls in high school and college. One girl in my grade eleven friend group was extremely arrogant because she could draw anime well. She claimed Disney scouted her at an anime convention. This is a lie, Disney does not scout, you must send in your portfolio to them and they wouldn’t be at a sh!tty anime convention in a Canadian city. The second time there was a girl in my college class who claimed she was so pretty, she was approached by a modelling agency scout at a shopping mall, but she turned them down because she was too good to do that. Another lie. I met someone who worked for a modelling agency as a secretary. They do not scout either, especially not at a shopping mall. Once again, people wanting to work for them, have to come in with headshots and measurements, go through an interview and they also want to see what you look like without makeup. Some people have really low self esteem, and ridiculous stories easily disproven by five minutes of research, make this very obvious.

When I was in college studying music, I had a very fun night class called Jazz Improvisation. We warmed up on scales and arpeggios on our instruments then learned a song out of "The Real Book". We had two performances a semester and both of the dates were on the syllabus we all got at the beginning of the course. They were a Thursday morning Concert Hour performance and a Sunday afternoon final performance at the end of the semester. Sunday was mandatory the concert hour could be missed but ya had to write a one page paper on a concert you attended that semester. If ya do both ya get an A. One semester we had a piano player in class who learned by ear. Never learned to read music and never bothered to learn any song. Fast forward to the Concert hour. Kid had to sit out because he never learned any song. Ok, do your paper hand it in by the Sunday concert to get credit. Sunday concert, our final exam for the class... long standing rule is the show is at 3:30 Tommy wants us all there by 9 to set up and run a dress rehearsal. If yamiss set up, ya break down by yourself. Well, prodigy kid waltzes in at 2:45 saying "I haven't learned any of the songs". He could've learned Impressions which uses exactly two chords. Nope. Only person I've ever met or heard of to fail Jazz Improv.
