hey Show More and mobile folks. this ever happened to you? i feel like most people are on board for games when they're brought up but often there's one person who falls into one of these two categories (you're cheating or this is complicated). anyway i hope you're having a good thursday and that you have a great weekend

What’s most painful for me is the wild leaps of logic nobody even implied were a thing. “Okay so all the pieces are the same. Now you can roll.” “I got a 3. So I go 6, because I’m the car.” “What the fuck is wrong with you”

Use the auction rule and don't put money into free parking. The reverse is why monopoly takes soooo long to finish. The same people who moan about 5 hr monopoly games are the same people who are adamant that you HAVE to put money into the centre of the board. Monopoly is a game as but eliminating your opponents. If someone lands on free parking and gets $1,000. You have just rewound the clock an hour.

@@alomustar2142 ? I don't think five minutes is at all a long time to explain the rules. I would worry its hardly enough. Its not about learning enough to start playing, its about learning the rules necessary to create a strategy and actually learn what would and would not be advantageous to do. Imagine you've created a strat and have been playing with it for 30 minutes and the one thing you depended on to make it work is actually forbidden. Could've saved the heartache with explaining the rules thoroughly...
@razordrive3238

William Scully I feel like it largely depends on the type of audience you are working with. People who are familiar with the sort of game being played, but not the particular one, will benefit more from a lengthy and in-depth explanation because they have the context and basic understanding of how the game is played needed to make use of that extra information. A more casual group on the other hand that is either unfamiliar with the genre or is just not super invested in to gaming in general will likely be unable to follow the full rules due to not having the context needed to understand why many elements are important, or may simply not be terribly focused on winning the first game. In that case, its better to get to the point and get the game rolling, guiding them through some of the first steps and letting them take charge once they get more comfortable with the game as a whole. Ultimately even if you do take the time to fully explain the rules, first time players will always be at a disadvantage from not knowing things like “card y is super powerful, but is easily countered by cards x and z. It is really important to not let anyone know you have card y until z and x are used”, so usually I feel its better to get the basic concepts down, and then explain more as things happen in the game and people ask questions.

"So you can play tricks which are like 3,4,5 or numbers in a row or sometimes you can play cards of the same suit and you're trying to get tricks of 7 which is 200 points unless its an unclean trick which is only 100." _argues with friends who have been playing this game with them for years about what exactly is an unclean trick and doesn't find a conclusion_ "And basically you want to get points with your partner and play all of the stuff in your hand." Game does not end when your hand runs out Cards must be same suit and in order, not one or the other Tricks are not the only way to get points, and you lose points based on different cards in your hand There is a wildcard that can stand in for any other card

Literally setup a game for some kids and my sister walks up to it going "This looks confusing, are the kids going to have fun with this? I don't think this looks good, it looks too confusing for them, kids do you want to play this instead of X-Box?" I was so mad, but had to hide it. The explanation I could see them just assuming it would be hard and all the excitement they had before had left (Memoir '44, a WW2 game with a bunch of army dudes on the board). Good news is, after a while, they DID get into the game and enjoyed it.

I never saw you before and I'm.. saddened? I normally sit on my PC, rather motionless or emotioneless except for like.. beeing angry at games or laughing at actual comedy films... long story short, I laughed, snorted and blew air out of my nose really hard from your video. Thank you, it's like .. comedy based on real life.. well that's what it is.. but so.. you know.. funny. Damn dude I suck at writing, your video is awesome, you are awesome and I love you, peace out

I'll literally get my family down for a game and eventually they'll shut up for me to start explaining the game and then they'll start talking over me about something random. I simply just stop talking and every explanation, sit down, and do stuff on my phone till they're done. Happens every time. Im not gonna fight for the frickin metaphorical microphone because they wanna interrupt me after they just told me to stsrt explaining the game

I think of all the games where I've encountered hellish house rules, it's Clue. I've played with people who let you ask any player any question. And I always insist: "no you have to ask the player to your left, and if they don't have anything, it moves to the player to their left"

There’s a reason I’ve gotten Cash ‘n Guns out more than any other title. People look at a box filled with guns and they will shut up to be given the chance to point them at one another.

This is so accurate. So very, very painfully accurate. I started googling "how to teach board games" because I thought there was something wrong with me and how I taught board games. I'm apparently not an idiot, and I thank you for this.

I tried to teach my parents how to play Scythe one time. Games should take about 2 hours, maybe more if it's your first time playing. It took us four days, playing for about 2-4 hours per day, and most of it was like this. In short, bad decision.
