The BRIDGE to words!!!
Joint attention - communicative intent - pointing - gestures - signs - sounds - and finally, WORDS!
There is SO much to do! We have to set your child up for SUCCESS!
YOU CAN DO IT!!
Begin with pre-linguistic skills such as eye contact, attention span, play skills, then work up to social games and routines (ring around the rosey, peek a boo, giddy up horsey), following simple directions, identifying objects and pointing, and then begin using GESTURES and SIGNS to help teach words and communication.
Prelinguistic skills videos:
Following direction / social games: • HOW TO GET A CHILD TO ...
eye contact / responding to name: • HOW TO GET A CHILD TO ...
Attention span with books: • HOW TO HELP A CHILD LO...
Play skills and play routines: • HOW TO PLAY WITH A CHI...
• AT HOME PLAY SPEECH TH... - play with MAGNETS!
How to make a request/ask for something?!
1) set your child up for success to make a request!
- provide opportunities for your child to make a request by not anticipating needs & limiting access to your child's favorite snacks/toys
• TODDLER SPEECH THERAPY...
2) provide a SIMPLE sign PAIRED with a word and model, model, model!
- BE FUN! Use positive reinforcements and motivators
• HOW TO WORK ON SPEECH ...
- Don't over prompt - meaning, do not prompt ALL DAY for common objects/toys and food! Focus on using this technique with your child's FAVORITE thing and stick to it! For a minimum of a week, up to 50 times per day! (WHEW! therapy is hard work! I know!)
• HOW TO IMPROVE SPEECH ...
3) Use repetition, hand over hand (when you can and be QUICK!) and SHOW your child / help someone else be successful to model success!
• HOW TO IMPROVE SPEECH ...
4) provide a CHOICE to give your child POWER!
• HOW TO PROMPT A CHILD ...
- Try to keep it simple! Don't use difficult sounds or words! (for example, "j" is a VERY tough sound - leave it out!! Focus on the vowel - "OO" and the "s" at the end!)
5) Do a little, get a little. Do a lot, get a lot! Help your child become successful by not giving in to tantrums and negative behaviors - walk away. You can always try to prompt again later and your child will be more motivated because they were not successful the first time.
• HOW TO GET A CHILD TO ...
6) teach one sign / action / gesture at a time to limit a child "scrolling" through ASL signs.
Avoid OVERGENERALIZATION of "MORE" sign because some things cannot be "more!" and/or sometimes we (as parents and providers can't figure out what "more" is because we haven't given anything in the first place - so switch the "more" sign for something more functional - cracker, cookie, juice, candy, game, play, up, down, in, open! ANYTHING is "more" when they sign it again! But "more" can't be anything when nothing is given!

You should write a book! Any book recommendations would be appreciated. My son just turned 3 and has suspected apraxia.. Wish you were in Houston to be my sons therapist! Wish I had your energy an knowledge. I’m trying an it’s exhausting! Our therapist is not grabbing his attention an has no enthusiasm like you and it’s costing me a fortune. More tips, tricks and strategies please! Just from using a few of your tips has helped him-unbelievably. My son loves and laughs at your onomatopoeia video! Thank you and God Bless!

Hey hey! Fellow speechie here! Have you done a video talking about AAC or more specifically core board use yet? I love sending your videos to my students parents as supplemental information and I have some core boards kiddos whose parents just need a good informative video about it. They are very responsive to my explanations, but it is always good to have that secondary source to send!

Hey there, absolutely, I LOVE pulling in other providers to reiterate or further explain something! Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of experience with AAC devices in early intervention so honestly my advice probably wouldn’t help much! I think I did hear a podcast recently from an SLP who works with AAC exclusively if you want to check that out! It’s at FreshSLP podcast on Spotify or online! Sorry I can’t be of more below right now!

My child likes water more than juice, but when sometimes he tries the juice a couple of times and wants it again and again, I try not to give it in excess. I use juice maybe one a month. He drinks juice only at grandpa’s. So no, water is not boring for him at all.

My son uses the “more sign” for everything. Almost like a crutch now So I encourage it ?

Hey there! Acknowledge that he wants more, then provide / model 2 signs that are options for WHAT he wants more of- hand over hand help him choose one / do one & then reward with that! He may not like the hand over hand assistance so it is important to do it very quickly and make sure to be overly excited with a positive reinforcement ready to go!

My daughter is 4 and a half and has lip-tie. She produces sounds for age 4 and above but doesn't say year 3 one's. Which she should be doing like b, m, p. How can I help her say b and p. She does say mmmmm now but only a few times after we make her practice. After that she starts subbing it with nnn again.

Hey there, Does she typically have a mouth open posture? & Breathe through her mouth a lot instead of her nose? I usually see the situation you’re describing when I child has difficultly closing their lips which could be due to orthodontics needs (sometimes teeth stuck out from sucking thumb, pacifier or bottle) and other times could be ENT related. I would recommend lip exercises from my oral motor lip exercises video! & see how her lip strength is & be sure it’s not difficult for her to close her lips! Let me know your thoughts

@@TheSpeechScoop that's exactly it. She has difficulty producing sounds in which she need to connect her lips together. She did use pacifier a lot. Kindly suggest some oral motor exercises I can do with her at home easily.
