NOT nu metal! Nu Metal came about 1) By bands influenced by RATM, and 2) Because RATM was only releasing a new album every 4 years which left a vacuum that other bands filled. The music labeled pushed them to release more often, but they didn't. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to learn that since they didn't release often, and the label liked the "sound" so much they encouraged others to make similar music instrument wise but to leave out the controversial political and fact based rebelliousness/protest lyrics.

Rage had little to no influence on Nu Metal. Nu metal was more influenced by bands like Faith No More, Helmet, Suicidal Tendencies, Primus, Mr. Bungle, Prong, Jane's Addiction.

As far as I can understand the debate on if they are or are not, everything I have researched and every person who I talk to definitely say they would consider them nu metal and consider them to have influenced and pushed the nu metal genre into the mainstream

The distinction is in context. Nu metal (in general) is angry tantrums about abandonment, and alienation. Rage against the machine is Specifically about social uprising, actual events of governments murdering people (like Malcom X and MLK) to silence their voice. Nothing LABELED nu metal had their entire discography banned from the radio after 911...nor were they labeled as terrorists. Both happened to RatM. They also shut down the New York Stock Exchange mid training day. This is not a band named Rage against the machine.....it's a history lesson and a rally cry.

I wish we had more bands making music like RATM today. I'm a Xennial (Gen -X/Millenial) and this was the music of my formative years. This opened peoples eyes. The internet was in its infancy. All we had was music to spread important messages that have been lost in the comidification of every aspect of our lives.

Rage Against the Machine is not "Nu-Metal." It's Metal + Funk + Rap + DJ. They don't fall into that category.

Rage doesn't use a dj as far as I remember. Its just Tom morello making dj sounds with his guitar

@@alexred9111making DJ sounds is functionally equivalent. The marketers didn’t have a genre name for it when Rage (and Faith No More and the greebo outfits from the UK) did it, but the music fits the eventual name. No, they’re not as morally bankrupt as Limp Bizkit. They still made the same style of music.

Nu metal is what happened after the machine tried to bury rage's message....they were too popular and groundbreaking to silence, so the powers pushed similar sounds whose message was bitches, bling, and blow (bread and circus)

Ok well, me thinking it was nu metal, knowing it came out during the era, me getting the album in a bundle with limp bizkit, Korn, Staind, made me think even more that it was nu metal. I also googled it before I picked this song to record this episode and a sub genre was labeled nu metal. So, if I am wrong I apologize. But it still makes for a good watch for young people who have never been into the metal genre in the 90s

@@nerdingoutwithrickshaw7817don’t apologise. People don’t want to acknowledge the genre because, well, Limp Bizkit exist. That doesn’t change what their sound is. The same way Vanilla Ice and Public Enemy (yeah, I’m old, so my referents are old) are still hip hop.

Rage is not nu metal lol they started in 1991 when actual metal was in its heyday, and they weren't metal to begin with. Rock/Alternative maybe. Sounds like the teachers need teaching.

Iroinicly at 66 I got plenty of zoomer friends...most of which easily accept all this older stuff..it's when i show them newer stuff like Years of denial or SYZYGYX or Lorna Shore Or JinJer..that seems to take more time to accept..go figure!

Might want to hold off ono the teaching role, RATM is NOT nu metal, there's an argument to be made they influenced nu metal artists, but they are definitely not themselves.

I think with most info I’ve seen since this recording I might agree, but there’s definitely a thin line. Metal with rapping and groovy parts during the nu metal era, is still a little nu metal. When I recorded this I even found nu metal as a sub genre.
