When I was 14, I saw Rage live with a girl I liked. Within seconds of the show starting, this young lady started doing exactly what you did as soon as the song started. I remember thinking she was too cool for me. When I was thinking this, she grabbed my hand , kissed me for the first time (on the cheek), and screamed thank you into my ear. 22 years later and she still holds my hand and screams in my ear the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

As a guitarist, I love how RATM take these simple groovy riffs, and turn them into anthem's that move crowds. The song writing is top notch. Every Rage song has me feeling like I can overthrow the government right now by myself. After I am done listening, I remember I am just a normal bloak in my pajamas watching KZbin while eating Dorito's. I don't even own an airsoft pistol.

Never apologize for pausing and reflecting. That's why we're here. I want to hear your thoughts, your feelings, your reactions. That "Fuck." After the "Weapons not food, not homes, not shoes, not need..........While arms warehouses fill as quick as the cells..." verse was absolutely perfect. That's really the only reaction to how much he dropped in a single verse. Legit one of the most powerful, potent, devastating verses of the decade. And yes, Tom is his own brand of wild genius, but the meaning is always the biggest focus to try and unpack. The military industrial complex isn't just destroying America, it's destroying lives everywhere, and Zach is gonna say how he feels about it. I always recommend lyrics on the second listen, not the first. Let the energy and whatever you pick up guide you and take you away. THEN you can soak in the layers of meaning in the lyrics and how it empowers the "rage" of the band. Next recommendations from a lifelong fan: "Wake Up." It doesn't get clearer or more on-brand than this song. "Down Rodeo" is incredible, too, of course. So so so many. Really just spin a giant wheel of their songs and you can't land on a bad one to react to and process.

I had never considered your analysis/comparison of the refrain to the children's rhyme of "pocket full of posies," and the potential metaphor/symbolism of death there. For me the refrain is more literal, about standing up for one's "family" whoever they may be, blood or otherwise, and being willing to stand. Zack is a serious poet, and so I don't disregard his use of metaphor instead of just making a rhyme. Thanks for helping me see something new after 30 years of loving these guys. I saw Rage live in a tiny farm town rodeo arena in Spanish Fork utah in 1996 , I was in high school and Rage was everything back then and they did a FREE LIVE SHOW in some little farm town in utah and went over the time limit and since it was outdoors the police came and were trying to shut it down and he just kept going and going and going , amazing experience as a teenager and I love I got to experience Rage before they broke apart . And I Cavan say I’ve Never felt more energy from a crowd and band live than Rage (except maybe NF) 🙂 was epic!

I’ve always taken “Rally round the family, pocket full of shells” to be about the LAPD and LASD. They’re the so called family and they close ranks. The song was released in 96, not so long after the LA riots caused by the acquittal of the LAPD officers who beat Rodney King. Lots of tension here at that time. I’ve enjoyed listening to Rage and their live concerts are exciting.

Now to my old man ramble comment.....Aileen, I have not been this excited about a reactor about to embark on some epic music in a year or so, probably when you and a couple other reactors started their NF journey. Excuse me if I gush a little or babble too much info, but I've been a fanboy of Rage since I was a barely-20yr old Sk8er punk, hearing there debut album in '92, and my mind was truly blown for the first time ever by music. I was like what is this??? How are they???? Why do I feel soooooo AAAHHHHH!!!(in a good way!!) They were soooo huge in this kids life, dysfunctional family (that's nothing unique though) no direction yet, no idea who I was or what purpose I wanted to fulfil, full of sooo much anger and angst! I'm not saying RATM alone single handedly changed all that, but it opened a door, to a different way of thinking, to a genre of music that I never knew existed, and was being created in front of my eyes, it was so full of energy, and so aggressive and in your fukin face, yet when I walked through that door, I found the best people in the world....kind, empathetic, meaningful in what they said, stood up for what they believed in, loyal to a fault, yadda yadda yadda yadda, you know the deal, when something hits ya in life and ya go...."Yeah, this is where I wanna be, these are my people, this is where I'm supposed to be"......Well RATM facilitated that moment for me. Dammit, used up all my babble credits, super short version.... Zack doesn't just sound like he's rapping, he one of the most prolific lyricists of all time, he's left off a lot different GOAT lists because his spittin' skills are over rock music, you'll find out more on that though. The band doesn't just "not worry about what they say or what people think", they have always put there money and bodies where their mouths were, donating a percent of all albums, singles and tours to charities that are close to their hearts, usually something to do with activism and social justice. They also were known to show up, unannounced with no fanfare or media coverage, to different protest or activist events to lend their support to that cause. Tom's mom is a life long activist, and met his dad while participating in the Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, in the 1960s, Tom's dad was the first U.N. ambassador for a free Kenya, his great Uncle was the first president and his great aunt the first Kenyan woman in parliament. Zack's parents are both Mexican-American and his dad was a big supporter and friends with people in the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) a rebel group that formed in Chiapas Mexico in the 90s, to oppose NAFTA and fight for indigenous peoples land rights. Zack has been a big supporter of them over the years, the flag often seen on album art work and at their concerts, a field of black with a singular red star in the center is the flag of EZLN. Always loved this band growing up, however, they probably wouldn’t like hearing that I would listen to some of their stuff on a helo insert going to hit a target overseas. But they always got me pumped up to go do work
