It's great for starters. Actually my first exposure to metal was metallica and the first album that I listened to was black album (one of the best). You can listen to black sabbath and deep purple after that. Also don't forget led zeppelin. These three are the most legendary bands. But THE most legendary one is led zeppelin. They're called the unholy trinity (I don't get what's unholy about them LOL)

Dude. When I gave my wife her first lesson, she was doing diminished sweep arpeggios. Just kidding. The arpeggios were actually based on the Mixolydian b6 scale. Just kidding again.
