Dear Emma - Of course I had no doubts that I would love this video with your dad, I've been looking forward to it since you posted your "which pattern" question. But I have to say that I was so happy and cheered by the whole conversation and exploration with you and your Dad. What a wonderful conversation for you to have together. What a joy to see you working and learning together. He seems like a wonderfully sweet and loving dad. Thank you both for being willing to share your quilting adventures with us all. xo

Oh Emma, this brought back memories! My dad was born in 1917 and watched his mom and aunts quilt, knit and sew. Though he didnt do it himself he taught me how. He was great at seeing what I could do to make it better, just by remembering how his mom did things. My first quilt was at his suggestion (I was 16 and had lots of scraps from sewing clothes). Dad told me how his mom used old blankets and worn out clothes as batting during the depression. My dad was one of my best friends. Enjoy your dad and cherish these times with him. ❤ Loved this episode.

19:24 there's another way to make a log cabin that will give a more square result. We used your technique on a fundraiser quilt and they turned out wonky like this one or worse... See how the upper right corner bows in? That because he cut the long strip too short and that side progressively bows in more and more. Sometimes the blocks in the fundraiser quilt bowed in like your dad's, whilst others bowed out. I redid most of them as not to embarrass any of the volunteers. A better method is to precut all the strips... 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 ect. inches long. And then sew them together. That way you ease the fabrics to fit the size and your blocks will come out all the same size and be square. 💖🌞🌵😷

Yes, the log cabin is a simple, fun, and interesting block for a beginner. I would suggest 2 inch strips or even 2.5 inch strips. The block comes together more quickly, less sewing, and the blocks can be bigger to make a whole quilt top with less sewing. What a fun project for you and your creative Dad. His imagination is working....❤

Hi Emma. How lovely that your dad and you share the same crafts, in what is probably thought of as predominantly female crafts. I had an uncle and two brothers who all used a sewing machine and one brother used to use a knitting machine, also a male cousin in Australia in his 80s now and does lots of needlework, cross stitch etc. My parents are now deceased, but I'm sure mum told me years ago that my dad used to knit when I was very young. I'm in my very late 70s and still miss my dad so much 😥 especially while watching you both. I've always knitted, crocheted and sewed, but new to quilting as from last month. Love your video's and loved seeing you chat together 💞
