Teaching our dog how to use a bell to go outside

We taught our dog to ring a bell to let us know when she needed to outside and pee.
The first step was to teach Belle what the word touch meant
The way we went about this was we would place our hand in front of her tell her to touch than gently move our hand onto her nose. When her nose touched our hand we gave her a treat, we repeated this several times and then stopped moving our hand so that she would have to move her nose to make the connection, when she did she was given a treat.
We then attached a bell to a wall at a height that was easy for her to reach.
And when she needed to go out to relieve herself we would walk her to the bell ask her to touch it by pointing at the bell when she touched the bell she was given a treat and she was able to go out, this we would touch the bell ourselves and continue and then take her out this way she would still associate the bell with going out, it is important though that you only take your dog out to do their business then bring them right back in. you want them to associate ringing the belle with needing to Pee and pooh and not to go out and play or walk.
We did the touch the belle to go out and pee for a full and receiving a treat for two days after that her reward was just to go out and by the end of the week she was ringing the Belle to go out without us prompting her to touch the Belle.
We hope this helps and if you have any questions leave them down in the comment section, we are by no means expert dog trainers but we will do our best to answer a question if we can. Thanks for watching everyone

My dog would keep her eye on the treat... and then I would boop her nose and give her the treat and she would be like okayyyy? I held my hand out to the side with two fingers out, and told her to touch them. I think that worked a little better... at first, my hand was kinda blocking her and she didn't understand. Anyway, thanks for the video. Prolly gonna keep this one! Helped a lot👍

Excited to try this. We just got a 4 month old puppy. He waited 3 days to start going potty in the house, and we take him out all of the time. He goes out does nothing, then as soon as we go in he goes potty. No matter how long we are outside.

Good tip! Our dogs always pawed the door and that worked if we were in the room. But living in a 4000 sq ft, 2 story home, we were most often in a different room during the day. In 2011, we spent a month in China and left one dog at the vet for knee surgery and the other went to a dog sitter who kept many dogs. Logan learned to ring a bell on the back door to go out. We tried to teach him many tricks with treats, but the older dog, who had learned them all before we got Logan, was always front & center and stealing the treats! Poor Logan was dumb as dirt. We didn't get to teach him many things with Buster around. Logan was our snuggles and loved to ride on the dash of our RV. We miss that little guy. Buster won't be around much longer and hubby says no more for now. He would have to be saving ones life for us to get one sooner. He came home with a Chihuahua he found running down the middle of the road at rush hour. He went out the next day to see if anyone had put out signs and found it's owner. He babied that dog and named him and didn't want to give him back. LOL The ladies brother had put the dog in the backyard and left him for a minute to get his phone. The dog squeezed out the fence. So hubby said since it wasn't her fault, he felt better giving the dog back. He's such a softee!

Hi Guys, it's been very helpful for us. It pro a my doesn't look like it in the video but it can be tedious to teach, I think we did almost a full day with Belle just sitting on the floor for her to learn touch our hand before moving to the Bell the second day, but it was well worth it in the end

Hi Roger, Belle is our first dog and she was 6 months old when we got her, we were told she was already house broken but she would make a mess in our apartment all the time. She wouldn't cry at the door or make any noise she just kept peeing on the floor lol. We lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment building so a doggie door wouldn't work, a friend of ours recommended teaching her how to use a belle and she explained to us how to. Luckily Belle picked up on it otherwise I don't know what we would have done. Thanks for watching and always taking the time to comment we appreciate it🐶

Junior is our looker you talked about...sits there looking at you. He is special in that he will not eat our of a bowl or drink from one either. Odd, but he uses my theater seat cup holder only. and his 3D printed flat plate I made for him. Buster is not as picky...he will eat or drink out of anything. He is so much easier. Love my Junior though.

I remember the video of the 3d print bowl how it has one side on a slope so he can pull the food out of it like a slide. Thought that was a pretty creative design. I don't think Belle cares wjat her food is in either but won't eat unless we are home with her, she has big time separation anxiety.

Hi Izzy, We had Belle swabbed to find out and she is 25% Chihuahua 12.5% Vizsla 12.5% Basset Hound 12.5% American Terrier and 37% assorted terrier/sporting She is a great dog, very smart, great listener and understands most of things we tell her. I always say she is smarter than me because she is able to understand almost all of my words, but I don't understand any of hers. We picked up Belle about 6 years ago from a shelter in Virginia. She has been great! a bit hyper, but no one is perfect lol Take care and good luck with the bell training!

Great video! I just got new French doors installed and I want to teach my dog to do this so he won't scratch the doors. He is very smart but he's 13 and almost completely deaf. He won't be able to hear me say "touch" so can you suggest another way?
@MovingForwardAdventures
@MovingForwardAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, when we took Belle to classes for training there was a dog there that was deaf. They taught him everything through hand gestures. This is the only thing I could think of your dog as well. Maybe some type of hand signal to represent touch, maybe one hand to make the signal and use the other to touch his nose.

How old of a puppy is Belle? How long have you had her? I just got a puppy dachshund who is 6 months old. I’ve only had him a week. Do you think it’s to early? I think so. If I did the touch thing, he’d bite my hand. Not aggressively, but in play. I’m working that. Is Belle potty trained?. We’re working on that too. Heheh. Yeah, now that I think about it, ringing a bell is shooting to high right now. Safe travels!

Hi Dreaming of RVing, We got Belle when she was 6months old also and it was one of the first things she learned, because she was making too many messes in our apartment. She is now about three and a half years old. When Belle was younger and she would put her teeth on us not to bite but to play we would do a loud scream, don't go too crazy with the scream and we would then say are those teeth, after a while we could stop the scream and just say to her are those teeth and it would stop her from using them. I think your pup is at the perfect age to learn all of this. Another good thing we taught Belle was to wait till we told her to eat, this stopped her from eating random items on the floor that could be harmful to her like chocolate or grapes and it also stopped her from Trying to knock the food bowl out of her hands. Hope this helps let us know if you have any other questions and we will do our best to answer them

Moving Forward I was at first trying the loud “yelp” when the play teeth come out, (ha! As I sit here with a blood pinky finger), but the sudden “yelp” startled my mother with Alzheimer’s. So that’s not going to work. Heheh. We’ll get there a step at a time. I just have to fine what works and stick with it. I think I need trained as much as Oliver does.

Moving Forward I think Oliver and I made great strides with potty training today. I’m watching him like a hawk and taking him out every hour or two. Then when he does do something, I praise him like crazy and we play fetch with his monkey squeaky toy for a while. But only when he does something. Seems to be working. Positive reinforcement. Biting is down a little bit also. The bloody finger wasn’t his fault really. We were playing with squeaky hide and seek and I didn’t get my finger out of the way fast enough. He’s a puppy. Hehehe. I love him! Ok, I’ll stop bugging you guys about dogs now. He just makes me happy 😃!! Safe travels!!
