Wow i love the family wall and the quiet corner. This would've been great if my kinder had done this with me but instead i just held onto a lipstick my mum gave to keep safe until she picked me up. This is the best environment for kids. I have adhd, so i would have thrived in this learning environment. Good on you and thank you for giving children time to warm up and feel at home, preschool can be pretty hard especially when it comes down to being away from their parents, some children. I worked at a kindergarten where the children would come in play and then sit on a mat for reading time. One student was struggling as he first entered the classroom and his mum told him to stop misbehaving but i could tell he just wanted some quiet time to warm up to everything. So i as soon as i mentioned cars and a book, he relaxed more into the first stage.

It breaks my heart. I was one of those children, too, so I am super sensitive about separation anxiety. My children also dealt with it, so I experienced it as a mother. I'm sorry for your experience, but it has helped you develop empathy towards those that have a hard time. ❤

I think it’s great all the personal touches that you have taken the time to notice and give the children. Your classroom should be a staple for all Toddler preschool classes!! For years I had mismatched furniture that was donated or found at garage sales. Over time we were able to replace most of it one piece at a time.

I’m curious, what do you do if one or several kids don’t sit in the circle but starts walking around?
@Teaching2and3YearOlds5 ай бұрын
I first try having an assistant sit with the child, helping them become engaged in our activity. But if they don’t want to be there, they can sit in the reading area to look at a book or hold a stuffed animal. They are welcome to return to our circle time at any time, and I will stop and invite them back. If it’s a number of children, this tells me to end circle time and move on. This is why I keep circle times super short at the start of the year and I don’t increase the time until I feel they are ready. And any time that I feel I am “losing” the group, I stop.

What an amazing class! I have a 2.5 yo and will start daycare soon but he's not good at sitting down for circle time. Sometimes he just walks away and does his own thing. Is that typical for his age? Any tips to help him get more focused?
@Teaching2and3YearOlds2 жыл бұрын
Hi Claire! Yes, it can be common. That’s why I keep my circle times interactive - using props and such to engage the children. They don’t just want to listen to me. They want to be part of it! But at home I’d suggest having him sit with you to look at a book. If that’s hard for him, pick short books. Even better is if you can find books with things he is interested in (fire trucks, for example). Not only is it a special bonding time between the 2 of you, but it’s also strengthening his attention span. Gradually, as he is ready, you can get longer or more detailed books.

How do you teach them not to break things or make a mess?
@Teaching2and3YearOlds Жыл бұрын
I don't stress about what we consider "mess". Two year olds love to transport things, so we will find toys everywhere. We do a group clean up at the end of centers time (not perfect, but it teaches them how to put things away before we move on to circle time). As for breaking things, I take time to show them how materials are handled. If I see that they are continuing to be rough with them, and I am concerned about the items being broken, I might put them away. But taking the time to show them how to gently care for materials goes a long ways.
