Stuff is happening but I'm stuck waiting for parts in the mail. I already have the firmware talking to multiple toolheads happily. Once I have parts the physical side can be manufactured.

@@TeachingTech Excellent. I've been in the queue for ages for a RatRig V4, but I'm now eyeing off the Sovol and tool changer setup if it can be made to work. I pulled the trigger on ordering the Sovol so I'll have time to get to grips with it before embarking on the tool changer journey. Wanting to print support materials and 4 colour prints without the crazy waste and the extra speed a tool changer should bring.

I've been following this excellent series with great interest. While I was upgrading the power supply to support multiple tool heads, I would have not only moved the SV08 controller fan to the switched FET PWM speed controlled fan output, I would have also replaced that fan with the Noctua equivalent. I just bought an SV08 and as part of the assembly process, I upgraded to the quieter Noctua fan and swapped the hot end for a MicroSwiss to get quick cold nozzle swaps (without touching the heater or thermistor) using the MicroSwiss FlowTech nozzle that I can use on other printers. I hate that all of the new high speed printers have nearly identical but slightly different proprietary high flow nozzles. We need an industry consortium to provide a more customer oriented experience. Every time I upgrade to a new printer every year or two, I throw away a few new spare nozzles that won't fit any other printer. I hate that.

Your channel has been extremely helpfully to me over the past few years. I am very excited to see you picking up this project, as I started looking into the possibility of doing this as soon as the SV08 came across my radar. Thanks for all you have done and are doing! Looking forward to your upcoming videos.

This looks very promising! I switched from my SWX1 to SV08 and encountered your mentioned problems also. But that is a minor inconvenience when looking at the price. I was thinking about buying an ERCF v2 but was quite unsure due few videos on it... But if your toolchanger idea works, then oh boy... That would be overkill for this price! Thank you so much for your all your effort (for the SWX1 videos also)!

Sovol is currently my favorite budget printer manufacturer. They absolutely let some stinkers make it off the production line and out the door from time to time, they really could have charged an extra $100 for the SV08 and shored up a few of the cheaper design choices, and their own customer support staff isn't always that great. But they do have some really crafty engineers that have a true talent for following the business philosophy started by Creality many years ago: 85% of the experience of the premium printer we're cloning for 30% of the price. I've been really happy with my SV06 Plus, and one thing holding me back from being more excited about the SV08 is my desire to print with multiple colors and materials without using a wasteful single-extruder setup. If you can successfully turn an SV08 into a toolchanger printer for a couple hundred bucks and some elbow grease, that might be enough to divert my attention away from the Vivedino Marathon. Very interested in seeing how things go in part 2!
@Kloberman
@Kloberman 6 ай бұрын
As a Marathon owner I can say it doesn't disappoint. Good build volume, speed, quality components, runs on Mainsail/Klipper, and having the designer in the Discord server personally helping owners and providing useful upgrades like integrating the Ember Prototypes CXC using kTAMV is amazing. With that said, I'm still excited to see where this series goes in accomplishing multiple toolheads on the SV08. If successful this might be my next printer (even with already owning 3x X1Cs with 6x AMS units).

I just bought an SV08 and I have a product I want to print on it that would use PLA as support material and PET-CF for the part, and it would be great to be able to print some TPU on both ends of the part for scratch/impact resistance without needing to print the TPU end caps separately and assemble them. I'd love to be able to add one or two print heads to the SV08.

I've been using my SV08 for a few weeks now, I was one of the lucky ones to get the early bird pricing of $449, at that price it was a no-brainer. Sure there are a couple of initial quirks to work out, but it is well worth the price. I look forward to future videos in this series, a tool-changer for this printer would be a most EPIC upgrade!

Even when I don't plan to do what you show in a video, it's still fascinating, and useful to know. I'm hoping by the end of this series, you will get it working, and sovol will end up offering a premade version with the multiple tool heads based on what you designed. I am clearly sold on the Sovol SV06 and SV08. I have a SV06, and I would get a SV08 if I had the room and the money for it. Hopefully that may happen in the future. The assembly time is shockingly quick, and the print quality is very good, with some tuning. 2 caveats, however; 1. Sovol is subsided by a government with a name that starts with a C and ends with an a, but won't mention any names, for both manufacturing and shipping, so the have an advantage on pricing. 2. Sovol printers are made as low cost as possible, so it is a given that you will be doing some tinkering and printing of replacement/mod parts. As for the second point, the amount of tinkering and printing is very minimal, in comparison to printers built before 2023.

Doing a toolchanger on the SV08 realy is a great project. Esp. using their original hotends. As CAN (or USB? I do not have my SV08 yet) is used, it should be even more financily interesting. The basic conversion to enable toolchangeing is quite cheap: The new PSU, the bay and the modification of the headholder (and the heads). As you barely need 5 tools all the time, you could modify 2 (or more) SV08 for toolchanging, but only buy 3 or 4 additional tools. Most of the time you might only need one or two tools, maybe three. So if you converted 2 SV08 and have 4 aditional tools, you could use both with 3 tools - or one with 5 tools and the other one with just one. A very flexible solution. Still, if you want multi colour, an Enraged Rabbit Carrot Fedder can be more useful and cost effective, as you can use much more colours. But it is not an this or that - you still can combine both. If you add an ERCF on tool 1, you could use f.e. 12 colours there, and still use the other tools for other materials (like TPU, wich can not be used on filament changers, or materials with other temperature). Also I still hope Prusa Slicer sometime will support different nozzle sizes in one print (as the XL was announced, they said they work on it). Imho a toolchanger just for multi colour is overkill. But for different materials and nozzle sizes it is definitly great. However, the main reason I have not ordered the Prusa XL was not the price - I had the MMU2 for the mk3 and I barely used it. The few multicolour prints I made in the past I always made with manual changes (labeling the bottom layers). Also I have one IDEX I barely used. Idex definitly is an alternative for toolchangers - if you combine an IDEX and one or two ERCF, you could do most things you can do on a toolchanger (plus Duplex and Mirror). The new VCore 4 IDEX could be an (more expensive) alternative for toolchangers, esp. if you want an even bigger bed (but the 500mm version might not fit throug normal doors after assembly). On the other hand, the main advantage of a toolchanger imho is using different nozzle sizes, and there is a lack of software support to do this. (yet). However, as I my hobby is definitly mor tinkering on 3d printers than to actually print, I definitly will do the toolchanger conversion for the SV08.

Wow!! I have always designed and built my 3d printers myself from scratch. I loved doing that but it takes an insane amount of time to get to a finished product.. I was thinking about adding tool changing to my coreXY printer but realised that there was (ideally) not enough space for that and could better design a complete new printer 😆 My plan was to build the DAKSH tool changing mechanism (channel '3DUnplugged') so for the first time not entirely my own design, but a good and sturdy tool changer design is not to be underestimated. Unfortunately, finding time for complete new build is a bit of a thing for me right now, and then I see this 😍 This looks very promising!! After 10 years of 3D printing, maybe I'll actually buy my first 3d printer!? 😄 Looking forward to the tool changer upgrade video(s). For me, a heated chamber and a built in carbon filter is a must because I mainly print ABS and ASA, so that would be nice extra upgrades .. Thank you Michael for starting this project!! 🙏

This is awesome. Thank you for giving this a shot. Also thank your wife. I have an SV08 on pre-order. I have two sovol's right now. An SV05 and an SV07 Plus. Hardware wise they're pretty good machines. I find them to be the best bang for the buck hardware wise. Unfortunately like most of the other major 3D printer companies software is not optimized and they tend to be released a little early, before a lot of the bugs are worked out. I will be watching all your future videos on this. I wish you luck and I may actually start buying the components to assemble this myself. I'm pretty sure I already subscribed to your channel if not I will do so now. Good luck.

Thanks a lot! It's high time for innovation. Through your project, you will help the 3D printing world find an affordable alternative to a multifilament print. This stimulates. In addition, I would like to thank you for the technically good explanation. As a teacher, you are to the point and you don't diverge. You make me very curious what you are going to come up with. More so what the consequence of this will be. How much space this will take up, if I can apply this with mods to my K1. And so on and so forth. Excellent start to what I'm sure will be a great series! I've been running my Ender 3 since late 2019, and I've been wanting something a little bigger and hopefully faster. It might not be for everybody, but the SV08 looks promising. I don't care about one-tap printing or the fancy aspects of the $2k+ printers. I like the paradigm of the Ender 3, and I think this is in the same spirit: lots of features, low price, open source, potentially a little janky, but nothing that can't be fixed with some upgrades. The CAD model of the Ender 3 has been great in designing and verifying upgrades, and I'm sure that was the case for you with the SV08. Looking forward to more videos on this!

The Prusa XL is an amazing machine, made in Prague. That kind of justifies the price, since everything is more expensive there than in China. Regarding the Prusa I've owned two types of Prusa now, a mk3s and an xl. Both times I saw the release, saw the wait times, and the early adopters having issues, which all were fixed in the first half a year to a year after launch. By the time wait times drop to several weeks they usually iron out most issues, and both my mk3s and my XL have been amazing work horses I will always love my voron 2.4, I've done all the mods, klicky, tap, beacon, custom lighting and they will always have their place. But with the vorons there is always an aspect of tinkering, checking the first layer despite the probes being pretty great Meanwhile the Prusas just do their thing. Hadn't touched the mk3 i ages, but needed something in ASA while all vorons were down, and it just worked, even first layer was solid. Just today I finished a 5 color print on the XL where I decided to just fill the bed with several prints in different colors and one multi color print, and it just worked flawlessly. Always expect growing pains but then solid performance for years

I purchased a MK3 when it was mature, and it was a reliable workhorse. For the Mini and XL, I was an early adopter and had issues. I think I've learned my lesson if a future Prusa release interests me.

I've been watching this printer and your channel closely. As usual, thank you for the thoughtful mods. In the case of the SV08, I've seen this phenomenon before with companies that try to take DIY open source or open hardware and commoditize it. No one who understand the Open ecosystem would have any objections to this. But I'm not buying an SV08...yet, until they get their quality control back between the lines. As you've experienced with both this SV08 and even the Prusa XL: day one products usually stink, because they've been rushed to market with the paint still wet. When the SV08 hits the second phase of series production, I'm probably in. Because by then, either they will have actually achieved a market ready "Voron-Adjacent" or the community, via the Open Hardware and Software, will have made the product viable. I'd prefer Sovol fix their mess, but I've watched the Open Hardware and Software worlds for decades, and this is usually how it goes. Great work!

Thanx for this great idea video. I was looking at building my own Voron, but the cost is almost 3 times that of the Sovol, because of import duties. Even if I buy a kit from a local supplier. With Sovol SV08, it's become alot cheaper to own a Core XY printer. Just hoping I get a local supplier in my country soon.

To lower cost further I envision a dead tool heads. By dead, no electronic wiring to dock. The receiver in the SV08 would have fixed extruder motor, fans, heaters and electronics controls. Dead tool heads would have extruder gears w/coupling, filament in path, heat break, heat bock without heater, air ducts, and wireless ID chip. Dead tool head would couple to extruder motor shaft. Nozzle heat would be done similar to Bambu A1, or with dropping into induction heater coil. Fans or CPAP cooling. Chip ID for configuration of temperature, and other filament related parameters. Docking may have facility for standby heating.

Excellent plan. I wonder if the moving gantry design is best for these though. A moving bed makes it easier to have filament purge. Also, heating could just be wired. It needs only 4 wires anyway and a bowden is required anyhow.

Really looking forward to this project - I've played around with the idea of building a Voron in the future but they've always been a bit out of my current price range and the build time isn't enticing. If this were to come to fruition, I would love to purchase one of these machines!

Cool idea. I was looking at the SV08 at launch but didn't pull the trigger. Had some issues with upgrading my SV06 plus and was down for a month while I worked my way through customer support and finally get the parts needed to get it back up and running. Not going through that again so am specking out a Voron 2.4 build with options for tool changer down the road.

Thank you very much for adding the electrical power disclaimer. It is greatly appreciated. PRO TIP: Never buy Version 1.0. (Or in Creality-speak, wait at least 8 months)

The question with Creality is do I wait for 4 months Creality to fix the problems or 5 months for the next model and then go back to step one.

I ended up swapping my preorder of the xl to an mk4. This looks like an interesting way to get to get the multi filament type printing. I look forward to how the build goes. Printing tpu seals on complex shape asa electronics boxes or toys to make them water resistant and maybe waterproof is something I want to do.

Add MeToo to a 5 head SV08 should one become available. Hopefully Sovol will productize a successful result! This would be a real value add over the standard Voron 2.4. Great stuff! Intend to follow along.

I am looking forward to seeing you get this to work. I really wanted the Prusa XL with the tool changer but couldn't justify the cost. I think I would end up in a divorce. Anyway can't wait for Part 2.

That's a great news .. I was far to imagine that kind of solution for the sv08 when I ordered it less thant 4 min after selling were open I'll follow this closely .. and even if I'm not that good at hardware reworking , wiring etc ... This could come to a perfect motivating context :) Maybe a better solution than going to the Co-print device it's suppose to be for this machine

I'm excited about this! I've been looking at the XL as well as the Bambu Labs Carbon X1 with MMU, and both were hard to justify. If this works out... I could seriously consider it!
