In this 14 part podcast series, learn all the language milestones from under 12 months to 48 months. We'll break down all milestones for both receptive and expressive language into 6 month age ranges. In each show (as well as on the handout), we'll define each skill, discuss its importance for language development, and then talk about the best strategies for targeting the skill in therapy sessions and at home. This information will serve as a fantastic reminder for typical language acquisition, as well as a great resource for parent education.
In this course, we're discussing the receptive language milestones acquired by 24 months
For speech-language pathologists, other therapists and professionals who work in early intervention and pediatrics, and parents of toddlers and preschoolers with speech-language delays.

Hey Mrs. Laura! I just wanted to say how much your video’s have helped me! My son was diagnosed with autism at 18 months however I knew something wasn’t quite right before he was even ten months old. I knew I had to wait for the diagnosis but i immediately started him in Early Intervention and on top of that every day I watched your videos taught myself and worked with my son. He just turned 2 in October and is already counting and can say short words like up down open close on off and some of his alphabet and literally I was lost and your page gave me hope and guidance! Also your energy is so beautiful you can tell you genuinely care and are passion about this and that makes the world of difference!

How common is high receptive language in asd kids? If already at 15-16 months all 24months receptive milestons were already achieved ? I suspect ASD in my toddler, because of delayed expressive language (about 50 words at 21 months) and some other flags. But her receptive was very good from the very young age, like she could feed me and her toys on request or give me asked toy on request at 9 months already. Command "throw your diaper to the trash" she could do since 10 months. Now she can understand and show on pictures where is day/night, summer/winter, left/right, up/down, small/big etc plus colors, shapes etc. She can do unusual comands like "hide remote under pillow", "show me all animals with a tail", it seems she understand more than enough. I dont understand how its possible to have good receptive language and delayed expressive 😢 Could this be because of ASD?

I do talk to my children every day and night but still no real words and they sometimes imitate. It is really hard having children with special needs and autism....

My child 2yrs is a light talker, she doesn't repeat words consistently. Sometimes it seems like she doesn't understand. Sometimes she just counts along and tries to sing abcs. Should I focus on receptive language?

YES! Focus on helping her understand more words and learning to imitate. She may have to start with imitating easier things -- like actions and sound effects - before she's ready to imitate words. Check out my manual Building Verbal Imitation in Toddlers for step-by-step directions for teaching her to imitate words. Thanks for your comment! Laura

Hello. I have a child (20months exposed to 4 languages). He is speaking a lot (around 200 words, some 2 words combination) but i am afraid he is not meeting the receptive language milestones that well. How is this possible?

He meets them almost all but not SO well. A bit hit and miss (at least some of them are hit and miss).

I have 3 boys with autism. They barely play with toys or even play functionally. Not sure what to do at this point. My son's are 3, 5 and 10

I hope that you can get help from your community. It is not easy to stimulate children with autism. Please don't blame yourself! Do you have any programs for help in your country?
