As a speech-language pathologist, is it difficult for you to determine which toddlers exhibit characteristics of autism vs. those with other language delays? Parents, are you unsure if your child's language is delayed or if he/she is showing red flags for autism? Join pediatric speech-language pathologist Laura Mize, M.S., CCC-SLP of teachmetotalk.com as she discusses the main characteristics that will help you differentiate autism from other developmental language delays in late talking toddlers. ASHA CEUs are available for speech-language pathologists and CE credit for other therapists.

This is very good video. Not all signs are autism. My sisters son ( now 9 years old) didn’t want to look or turn his head when she call him. He also had some other signs of autism, didn’t talk till 4-5 years old, social skills were zero, didn’t like other kids nor to play with them. In kindergarten he was always isolated, didn’t want to cooperate in any kind of cooperation. Now he is 3d grade he has very good grades. He’s Problem was speech delay, and speech delays were mostly because of TV, Tablets and cellphones He couldn’t express himself because of that he was ashamed and refused to talk or to play with another kids. Not every sign is autism

I watched your whole video from beginning to end. My grandson is turning 4 years old and has speech delay. He knows the alphabet, numbers and shapes. He’s even good in dancing and singing too but couldn’t talk yet. With your videos I’m pretty sure he has no autism but just speech delay. The main reason why he’s not talking is because of too much used of cellphone and watching television. Thank you for this very informative video.

Thank you so much for this enlightening video especially for those of us who live in societies were there’s little or no autism awareness, my baby is presently 17 months and she has a few of d atypical behavior u described like stiffing or tensing when shes angry at times, she has this love for playing with things that has lids for instance a bottle or cup she’ll try to open and close d cap severally for few minutes then move on to something else then come back to it after a while and throwing things on d floor and placing them back, she has the language jargon and does it a lot several, she doesn’t respond to me calling her name when engrossed in play and ignores totally no matter how many times I call her name but responds to others especially strangers calling her name immediately, but when I say things like please “please give mummy a kiss” she might blow me a kiss without turning to look at me, she hums also but not everyday, the thing is she has a few words like bye bye and water every other thing is dada although she might point while calling it dada, she started pointing at around 16 months and at a time will point at everything and everyone especially when she sees a cat or a dog she points and screams to get my attention, she seems to understand some basic instructions like give me, feed me, clap for yourself and bring my hello( phone), she imitates at times like trying to wear my shoes, using my comb to come her hair and sipping from a cup, she may look functionally at d water dispenser when I say water but the issue is of late she has stopped interacting with me as she used to and prefers playing alone although she still waves bye bye and rarely points to communicate except when I insist by pointing then she copies my gesture, she also showing more of that emotional signs she gets angry at every slightest thing and it’s a lot more difficult to get her to calm down with using the tv or phone but have been told not to worry and observe her better, non the less I found this video very informative and extremely helpful, thanks once more

This is so true, a mom I know has a son same age to my daughter. They are 28 month now, her son hasn't been speaking anything till this day. Because the well check up doctor at her place is not very reliable. I've been suggesting her to get him checked by professions since 18 month when I saw some red flag and repetition behavior. She dimiss everyone's suggestion and believes her son is just "behind". Maybe she is right, but it doesn't hurt anyone to have a kid evaluated.

One thing to keep in mind is that autism is highly heritable, so parents of autistic children are often autistic themselves (but very likely undiagnosed) or have autistic traits. This can cause signs of autism to be missed by the parent because "everybody does that, right?". Language-accelerated autism (formerly "Aspergers") with an unusual but articulate communication style exists, and can coexist with language-delayed autism in the same family.

Watch this video carefully, dont focus on indvidual signs, focus on your babies communication skills, cognitive skills and if there is seriously unusual behaviour or not. İf you are still concerned go see an expert. But dont forget, pandemic babies are different. And there are lots of different things causing autism-like symptoms such as screen exposure, or b12 defficiency

Hello... My son is 4 years old now. I'm most concerned about his speech. My pediatrician noticed him & advised me to see a development doctor. Unfortunately in our city there's none. He can't create a simple sentence; just the subject of a sentence or at least 3 words; no conjunctions. But when i'm going to let him get something he knows what it is to get though. Well, he somehow learns to sing rhymes in english but not as straight as the words in the song. I noticed he's more into singing; knows how to operate a cellphone & plays minecraft (that i don't understand the game) and surprisingly he can speak in english at least few sentences. We're Filipino & we did not teach him to speak in english.... I'm more of a concerned mother than a confused towards my son's progress in speech... I'm concerned if he has autism or just speech delay. I hope to hear from you Miss Laura Mize.

Also I used to rock in my crib and bang my head repeatedly, and I toe walked until I was ten. I am not autistic, so I guess it is possible to have some " classic characteristics" of autism but not actually have the disorder.

Talk with your pediatrician about the specifics... not just late talking. For example, you might say things like "He does not respond to his name, does not point, lines up his toys rather than playing with them as expected, does not follow simple directions, flaps his hands when he's excited, etc." Ask for a referral to your state's early intervention program. The evaluation is always free and they will tell you if he qualifies for therapy. If you're seeing these concerns at 2, it's very important that you address this now rather than waiting so you can help him catch up.. Kids with these markers don't outgrow them. If your doctor is not responsive, Google to find the contact info for your state's early intervention program and call them yourself. Hope this helps! Laura

I struggle with my 4 year old. He’s slightly speech delayed, toe walks, and drums when excited. As a baby he would tense up and shake. He still rarely does this. And he goals his hands. And toe walks. He also lined up his cars. But the developmental pediatrician and his SLP have ruled out ASD. Could he just be one of those kids that grows out of this stuff? All milestones met on time except he walked at 16 months crawled at 11 months, slightly late?

I gave mobile to watch videos to my son from his 8 months old, I was working in work from home and taking care of him alone. My son 2.2 year old now. Due to screen time my son doesn't answer name call, no eye contact, some times closes ears, repeats words which are not contexual like ABC till Z, wow, Oh no, answer me, wee, mine, 1-10, rhymes etc from the videos he watched. Now 2weeks back, I have totally stopped screen time.. He is not adamant about phone and he doesn't ask for it... Also I have started introducing many noun and action words from past week.. I can see improvement in listening.. Also I have started playing with bubbles, cars and ball as a habbit everyday for few hours... Also, we have started OT and speech therapy last week. Please let me know if his symptoms can be reversed.. And will he speak????

Oh Veerendra... It is very, very likely that he'll learn how to talk to communicate because he is already talking --- just not TO you yet. I have seen many, many children who were just like him and who DID learn to communicate AFTER they learned to link meaning with words. That's what you need to help him do... learn to listen to you, connect with you, and demonstrate that he understands what words mean by following directions. Once he understands words, he should begin to use those words to communicate. Please email me at laura@teachmetotalk.com for more help! Laura

He actually start to speak at one year old asking "What's that?" and memorized all object names. This is why we didn't understand earlier his autism. He doesnt develop normal language, doesn't communicate. Confusing me all the time.

@Tara King my daughter is almost 3, in August. At her two year I was on the fence... I actually was more worried then my doctor. She said if she didn't progress in her talking in the next month, I could come back in. In those next weeks, she really picked up talking, and even became better with 2/3 words sentences. Now, she is doing really great, and I have no worries!! I know I've rambled here, but I'd say give it more time.

@Tara King Omg! You have no idea! She was breastfed until two, would never take a bottle or pacifier. Absolutely would not eat the baby food in a jar. We did baby lead weaning, which was mostly carbs 😅 And she is still very much picky about texture, when it comes to food! All these things were why I worried about her falling on the spectrum. Luckily, she never struggled meeting her other milestones and always flourished socially. She is my first child, and I honestly felt like she was so "different" from other peoples children. Now looking back, I think I put more pressure on meeting milestones, when I should have just embraced she needed more time to find her confidence in terms of communication. She is actually the most independent and well rounded of the children I selfishly compared her to before. As long as your son is pointing to things, making eye contact and isnt terribly uneasy around other children and caregivers, id say he just needs a bit more time :) Next thing you know, you will be wishing you didnt say shit when you stubbed your toe 😅😂

My 13 month son has reached all his milestones till now. He walked at 10 months , he said mama and papa, he’s been very good. Lately, after his first birthday he seems to be different. He’s not calling mama anymore , he bubbles a lot but doesnt say a word. He also doesn’t point or waves goodbye. The thing i am most concerned is that he doesn’t answer whenever i call him. Possibly he wont answer at 80% of the time we call him. He’s very good at games and motor skills tho. Im so confused and stressed about it. Is it a delay or has to do with ASD?

thank you so much for your video and information. my son is 3 years and 8 montha old. he is diagnosed with language delay.today at this age he is really good with pretend play, showing with his finger or bringing his toys to show to people, waving at people and trying to comminucate with strangers, he is very excited to see other kids to play with and see strangers and try to fit in their groups, he is very good in understanding our facial expressions without any words but all these did not happen at the certain age you mentioned. like by the age 15 to 18 months he didn't know how to point . it happened alittle bit later.or before age of 3 he knew very well how to get other's attention to look at his new toy and play with him but before that he was still not showing off so much. is it ok if they get to those marks few months later than normal?? such as pointing. such as learning to show the things they are interested in? calling their parent's name??

I am so scared ...I take him to playground and he likes it ...does not throw tantrums much ....I talked to child psychologist and she suggested that I put him in preschool to be around kids his age away from all the gadgets ... he has no playmates just me around him to play daddy has no time and my daughter is 15 ... @@trinhnguyen2255 hi, no at 18 months its too early to pretend play . probably my son started pretend playing around 2 years and half. so did my daughter. and she doesnt have speech delay. he did not respond to his name everytime we called him but overally he was very cheerful and liked strangers, used to wave hand and smile at everyone. what I found out is if your child is interacting with people he is compeletly normal even if he has language delay. if he smiles at you and others, looks in their eyes, shakes hands and makes some type of facial comminucation, can read your feelings over your face he is doing fine.

I listened to this twice and took notes. My 3.5 year old son, who is behind his peers in language development, is an interesting case: he has autism flags in the speech area, but nowhere else. He labels a lot, repeats lines from other places out of context, displays some echolalia, and says jargon from time to time (though not internally directed). Literally everything else discussed here as a flag for autism, however, does not occur. The list is too long to even write up. He does initiate and respond, and can follow instructions as well. If he is at all autistic, it seems likely to be to a minor degree.

How is son now? Was he ever diagnosed?
@sirsinnes
@sirsinnes 2 жыл бұрын
@@Joycesilva87 Hi. Around the age of 4, my son was given a formal autism diagnosis on the basis of his communication (in)abilities. At the time, I was highly skeptical, and I continue to think that the label may wind up being a net-negative for him. However, I will admit that the services this opened for him have been excellent. In particular, he can attend a special weekly class geared toward communication development, which he greatly enjoys, and his regular preschool teachers have been contacted by a child psychologist and told to be extra lenient and supportive, which has made preschool a lot less stressful for him. (Note that we're in Japan. You might have a different experience depending on where you are.) Now our son is 5.5 years old, and both my wife and I feel that he's going to be all right. Although his communication abilities are still behind his peers, he is extremely talkative and sociable. You'd have to be highly familiar with child development norms and milestones to sense anything unusual about him. As I said in my original comment, if he is truly autistic, he's on the mild end of the spectrum. Every kid is different, though. If I were to give advice to someone with a 2-to-3 year old child who they were worried about maybe being autistic, I'd say to go ahead and give some of the "therapies" a try. It won't hurt. All that's really going to happen is that someone who is really good at playing with kids is going to play with your kid. Worst-case-scenario, it'll just be a waste of time. I don't know how useful my son's special classes truly are, but he loves them, and I can see why. They do a different fun activity every time that he doesn't get to do anywhere else, and the atmosphere is almost like a party. I wish the best for you and your child. Let me know if you have any questions.

@@sirsinnes thanks for your reply. Glad to hear your son is doing great. Looking back was there any behavior that you never thought was a concern and turned out as o e sign? My son is 3.8 yo and We have a appointment scheduled already for his initial evaluation but the final results might be ready by June. I feel like my son is like your son. Speech is the only concern. He used to jargon but not anymore. As he's getting more words out he started to jargon less. Echolalia is much less now as well. But his receptive language is still behind. Teacher from daycare said he doesn't always look at her but we never had problem with him with eye contact. Other than that he's completely fine.

If you’re seeing Autism symptoms in your baby or toddler try cutting out gluten from their diet. Look for wheat and barley in lists ingredients and avoid it. At around the age of 1 my beautiful son started withdrawing from the world. He became obsessed with pacing, lining up cars and spinning their wheels. His eye contact was very poor and he was lost inside his own head. At times it was as if my wife and I didn’t exists to him. I was naturally heartbroken and frightened for his future. I didn’t understand what had happened to him and I didn’t know what to do. I spoke to medical professionals and, although they tried, they weren’t much help. He was assessed and scored very high for Autism. I didn’t sleep for about three days and was constantly reading about ways I could help him. After much research I found a study on gluten and the strange effects it can have on children. I promptly cut gluten from his diet and the change in him was astonishing. I got my happy little boy back within a few days and after a few weeks he was completely free from the symptoms of Autism. I’m not suggesting that this will work for everyone but it genuinely did for us. If it stops one family from going through the hell that we went through I will be delighted. If it works for your little one please get the word out.

My son is 25 months... he is social, he points and gestures, he has joint attention, he can imitate, has good eye contact, his receptive language far exceeds his expressive language In addition to speech delay, There are 2 areas that stand out as red flags, he has some sensory issues like toe walking which happens infrequently, he lines things up, hand flaps infrequently.... he can pretend play but it’s not very creative, he would prefer to play with puzzles and books (maybe because we’ve played with those more often and he feels comfortable) So is that enough to assume he has autism?
