In SA2 and Shadow the Hedgehog, Maria was kind of a blank slate and we didn't get to see much of her, so her death never felt that impactful. I'm hoping we see stuff like this in Movie 3.

Crazy to think that this is the first time Team Dark have been depicted together working together as a team since 06 meaning they haven’t been working together as an actual team for 20 years

That's not completely true. In Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, Team Dark was still a thing, granted, it isn't canon. Omega was an optional character, but the three were still allied, with Omega saying he trusts Shadow and Rouge, and Shadow outright telling Sonic Omega is his friend. They've also worked together as a team a couple of times in the IDW comics, even outright being called Team Dark at one point, and the IDW comics are currently considered canon, despite the fact that it makes no sense for them to be.

Definitely my favorite moment was seeing more interactions with Shadow and Maria in the second episode was so even more emotional and heartbreaking than in the first episode and seeing Shadow show his emotions instead of being edgy all the time has made my love for Shadow even more strong can’t wait for the final episode of this amazing series 👍🦔❤️🖤
