I don't know if it's the same like on the old Dallaras, but back before the DW12, the P2P button was the same as the pit button, and Will Power pushed it going around the Long Beach Hairpin in 2010 and was going so slow that he tripped the Speed Limiter instead of getting extra horsepower. He probably still remembers that day quite well.

What does it mean that you can use it when you are at the alternate start/finish? Is it: restart without push to pass. When the driver hits that point - push to get further if needed? Newbie here - so I appreciate your help.
@ConorDaly22
@ConorDaly22 15 күн бұрын
So for qualifying at all road and street circuits there is an alternate start finish/timing line so when we finish a lap in qualifying we can pit right after instead of doing another full lap. It's basically a time saver for the sessions. At St pete, qualifying times are set right after the chicane before the final hairpin. Long beach the timing line is right before pit in. So when they go green on the restart out of the last corner in long beach, they dont have access to P2P until they get allllll the way around the lap to the ALT time line which is right before pit entry. Barber the alt time line is at the top of the hill before the final 3 corners. before pit entry.

Thanks Conor for offering your insight and perspective. I do wonder if the driver's knew or not. I assume like you said that drivers are always looking for a competitive advantage, so them pushing the button on restarts hoping it would work is interesting. Obviously it usually or never works. But once Josef and Scott realized it did, they were like okay!! I mean, a racer is a racer. Whether it's pushing the boundaries of track limits, or jumping starts, you are always looking for an advantage.

Penske was effectively caught cheating and blamed it on a technical problem: "Unfortunately, the push-to-pass software was not removed as it should have been, following recently completed hybrid testing in the Team Penske Indy cars," Team Penske President Tim Cindric said in a statement. "This software allowed for push-to-pass to be deployed during restarts at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix race, when it should not have been permitted. "The No. 2 car driven by Josef Newgarden and the No. 3 car driven by Scott McLaughlin, both deployed push-to-pass on a restart, which violated IndyCar rules. Team Penske accepts the penalties applied by IndyCar." source=speedsport

@@bluedog373actually, that's what got them caught. Indycar does give an allotment of P2P in warmup. Question - NBC tracks the 'push to pass' seconds remaining to use for each driver. Shouldn't NBC have access to the data regarding the 'push to pass' button being used? Seems like they would have seen weird usage on-air. In Long Beach, Diffey & Co. were literally telling us when Newgarden/Herta/Dixon were using the button. I was listening to the newest Speed Street pod when the news broke. Conor, you got your answer when McLaren breaks through and gets a win hahaha!

that data only refreshes each lap because they didnt want teams to be able to call out to their drivers saying the person behind them was on P2P. Super interesting comment that you sometimes hit that button just in case there’s a glitch and you get something. I wonder if this is the case with a lot of drivers or not? I wonder if they looked back to last year to see if this was happening, was st Pete the first race? Not really mad at them it kind of goes back to the old days of finding way to sneak extra fuel into the cars. With that said it sucks to have a race win overturned after the fact.

Question about P2P: on the restart @ St Pete, since it “activates” at the alternative timing and scoring line before the last turn, does it function like: if you press the button before the line, it will automatically turn on when you reach that point at the end of a restart lap?

Thanks for explaining this so clearly & concisely. I've followed Indycar since the mid-60s (yes, I am OLD) and didn't know the "button" had rules governing its use because I hardly ever watch anymore. Why? Because they do such a terrible job of promoting. At my age I need reminders! Maybe if I'd watched some races this year I'd know more. Or if Robin Miller hadn't gone away RIP. Last I knew, you had only so much PtoP & it was up to you to manage it. In F1 the DRS is contolled by the officials - why can't PtoP be that way? But once again, Conor - you did a great job explaining it. I first came across Kenny Wallace's comments earlier and you probably know as well as I do, that Herm is long on words but they tend to get disconnected 😆

Well I certainly hope you find the opportunity to watch more. P2P is technically controlled by the race officials, or at least we all thought it was hah. Does Indycar Race Control, manage the access of P2P? So what I’m wondering is during the warm up at Long Beach - did Race Control see a disrupter in the data feed or control feed of P2P specifically with those three cars - as it sounds like Penske had a software manipulation of this control? Then after they went to look at the driver camera feed to see if they used it on restarts? Although it’s tough to see now with the aeroscreen

Definitely read marshall pruett's most recent article about it. He explains how indycar tripped over the team being able to use OT in warm up at Long Beach when race control had it disabled. Indycar does indeed control when P2P becomes active. I dont think its great to look at driver in cars because teams can program different buttons to do different things each session if they wanted to.

According to the IndyCar rulebook, use of overtake is not available during championship races until the car reaches the alternate start-finish line. It was determined that (Newgarden) and (McLaughlin) gained a competitive advantage by using Push to Pass on restarts while (Power) did not.” The integrity of the IndyCar Series championship is critical to everything we do,” IndyCar president Jay Frye said 🤔🤔🤔 Penske’s Will Power also was docked 10 points 🤔🤔🤔 Power huh....for nothing??

Surely there must be data that shows when P2P was used. I regularly watch the live leaderboard on the Indycar app that clicks down the P2P seconds when they are used. It’s so hard to believe to me that someone wasn’t paying attention to that during the race. Or maybe the manipulation was that it didn’t show? Which would be a much more serious offense if true.
@ConorDaly22
@ConorDaly22 15 күн бұрын
Well the data that was analyzed is why they got the penalty. Saying they SAW evidence of them using P2P on starts and restarts means they definitely looked into it. But again, this is very new. P2P data updates only every lap so people cant update their drivers live on who is using it around them. When the lap ends you see how much a driver used. Definitely a sticky situation I think there will always be more we do not know. I am only going off of the data I know we can get.

For those wondering why Will Power wasn't hitting the button, it probably has to do with the 2010 Long Beach Grand Prix. On the Dallara IR08, supposedly the P2P button was the same as the Pit limiter button. When he went around the hairpin on a restart, he was going slow enough that instead of the 5-10 extra hp from the Honda V8, he got a 60 mph speed limiter and watched Dario sweep right by him for an easy win.

They got busted… it is what it is…and to your point I LOVE the drama, it’s exciting!!! I am curious if it was also turned on during St Pete qualifying 🧐. Also I REALLY want to know if Will knew it was available…. If he did and didn’t use it bravo to him but he if he didn’t and still got a penalty and that sucks for him. Personally I don’t think he or his team knew… call me crazy…that’s fine… (My theory: Scott or Josef figured it was available during practice and told the other one… they kept it to themselves… didn’t even tell the team 😅 cuz if the team knew they wouldn’t have taken the risk OR would have covered it up better lol).

See that is where it is confusing though because the way I understood it, the teams werent even able to tamper with the P2P as it was controlled by the series when it gets switched on. You cant activate it yourself as a team. Marshall Pruett's most recent article did a great job explaining where the system could have been tampered with. It's a tough one to judge for sure. Secondly, how easy is it for you to see that you're in P2P and do you have a seconds left coundown clock on the wheel screen? I know from other videos there's some lights that come on for overtake, but it seems like there are a lot of different lights that come on in that light bar too. [question 2 part b] Do some of those lights override each other? Like, when you're on pit speed limiter and it's a caution period, do you get yellow and purple lights, or one or the other, or what? Even the smallest suspicion will raise questions and put a bad taste in the mouth. Take the finish of the 2023 indy 500 for instance.
