Tip: Regarding spot lock motor hunting. Remember that even the i-pilot version of the ultrex and the ultera have a setting that even if your boat is not very heavy like an aluminum boat you can set what I believe they call boat weight offset to -2 and that should help that hunting. With a heavier boat, if the boat is drifting too much off the spot then the setting needs to be increased up to + 2. These settings can be found in the menu of the handheld and the phone app. It seems that this setting adjust the motors responsiveness and prop speed to a drift off a spot lock. Hope that helps

I'm still rocking a fortrex and I beat the absolute hell out of that thing and it's never failed me. Spot lock would be nice...but until this one dies, I'll keep using it.

What about the on/off switch on the Ultrex foot pedal going bad and the trolling motor turning on by itself ? they have a updated switch kit that is more sealed. I had to replace mine this year. My Ultrex is a 2022

My 19 Ulterra has been a champ....people need to educate themselves on the newer tech, I would drop the coin for the new quest in a heartbeat if this one ever fails....launching by myself is a breeze and the 80 lb thrust works great with my 20' boat.

I'm loving my Ultrex Quest so far. You are correct everything requires maintenance! Don't just use it and blame the manufacturer when it breaks. BTW I think a video on your opinion on what year and brand (Champion, Ranger, Basscat etc..)boats to look for for a project boat would be cool.

MinnKota is definitely very generous with the Warranty. Although I’m sure it’s all incorporated into the price. That’s the way it works

Current Ulterra owner... I would also add that the trolling motor is not meant to be in heavy current. I mostly fish the TN river and there has been several times that I get the dreaded "Motor Error" when trying to navigate heavy current.

Wouldn’t call it a problem but regularly replacing worn props helps them maintain shaft balance and have less vibration Cheap and easy win

I’ve had my Ultrex since 2020. Bought it used and it worked great for 2 years. Then it started intermittently not going in spot lock and it would run in stow.. called them because I figured it was a gps antenna issue or a switch in the head.. possibly a mercury switch that tells it it’s deployed or stowed.. they didn’t really want to talk to me.. they went through generic troubleshooting and ended call telling me to find an authorized repair shop. I went with my gut and ordered a new upper head assy… fixed!! works great and been working great ever since.. took the old one apart and there is in fact a position switch for deploy and stow, there’s also a small gps antenna for spot lock in there. Only issue I’ve had so far. 🤞

A little off subject and I know you don't like nitro bass boats, but I was curious to hear your thoughts on the Z before the Z, such as the NX 896 and 911 CDC. I'd like to stay within the 20-foot range because it appears to be the right length for tournament fishing in large lakes. There could be a good, bad, and ugly or a blast from the past vibe to it. The motor, a Mercury XR6 200 HP, is relatively rare and durable little thirsty 2 stoke, and it was a standard on many early Nitro boats at 20 feet during Nitro's promo with Mercury. Only if you have time to give some thoughts on the matter. Thanks in advance.

Could not agree more about the Ulterra and how folks use them. It is the S Class Mercedes of trolling motors and just like an S Class Benz you take it "off road" what do you expect? I swear if some folks would use them as a wench if they could figure out how.

Need to get rid of them fancy ones and just run a good ole MinnKota Endura! Mine has been killer for 15 years. Even use it on a little duck hunting boat that runs in mud, shallow water full of weeds, and ice. Only thing I’ve had to replace on it is the prop and the speed controller.
