I had similar condtion as Matt Gourley, and my aunt who was an expert doctor, asked me to change my shoes. I started using comfortable shoes and the condition was fixed. The problem was with my nerves in the foot were getting pressed all day while I wore the shoes and at night the nerves started relaxing with pulses. The solutions is worth trying.

For me the cause was slipped discs. Basically the discs if they're slipped/bulging can limit/block blood flow to your legs, leading to that pins-and-needles feeling similar to when your legs are falling asleep. My solution was just to fix my posture and stay away from lifting/moving heavy objects. Usually I'd know if my back was getting out-of-whack merely by my RLS acting up and I knew I was doing something to aggravate it.

I'm not a medical doctor, but I've had this exact symptom before (among other nerve-related discomforts) that you have Matt. The pins and needles may be caused by tightness in low back, usually from excessive sitting and poor posture, which can cause pressure on the nerves innervating to the spine. It could be related to a spine disc too (these can wear out with age), but a neurologist may have already given you an EMG, and found nothing, which might suggest muscle tightness instead. There are physical therapy exercises for the low back/hip (e.g., pelvic bridges) and stretches (e.g., pigeon pose) you can do daily to try to ameliorate the symptoms. Magnesium can also help relax muscles if you're experiencing spasms. Certain diets (e.g., Keto) can increase the risk of developing restless leg syndrome, too. Also, an EMG showing nothing doesn't mean something isn't wrong. My mom (mid-50s) had an EMG that showed nothing, despite having peripheral nephropathy symptoms. She had years of trying to get a proper diagnosis, before the issue was pinpointed to C4-C5 in the spine, and surgery relieved her of these symptoms. My EMG also showed nothing, but I have had peripheral nephropathy for 2 years. I used to have restless leg syndrome too, but that went away after maybe 6 months or so. I think from changing from Keto diet, regular PT exercises, and hydration were factors. Also cutting coffee and less alcohol. Best of luck, love the show!

Gorelys problem is easy to fix. 1. Iron supplementation. It's usually caused by an iron deficiency, rare in men, but still. 2. He needs to exercise his legs. Squats, lunges, leg extensions, hamstring curls. This is what cured mine, if your leg muscles have been adequately stimulated, they are never sore or restless. You sleep like a baby, and your legs WANT to be still.

Restless Leg Syndrome can have common physical causes. Mine was connected to my lower back. I've had slipped discs multiple times in my lower back, and whenever I would aggravate my lower back my RLS would act up. Basically had to fix my posture and be careful about moving/lifting heavy things, but I rarely suffer from RLS anymore. You can take medicine for it too. I have Ropinirole and it helps as long as the RLS isn't too severe.

Potassium and magnesium can help - we all know bananas are a great source, but leafy greens, nuts, legumes, oats are also good. Also taking supplements of magnesium before bed. These support the central nervous system, and play a role in muscle contraction. Isn’t a cure but can ease symptoms.

Conan's back nerve issue is called notalgia paresthetica, it's a particular nerve just to the left of center of the spine near the base of the left shoulder blade that often gets impinged in people's backs and causes a phantom itch in that spot -- rolling your back out or getting back massage can often help (straighter posture and avoiding poor lifting posture helps too)

RLS reminds me of opiate withdrawal. Used to have it badly. And often… decreasing caffeine dramatically- it got better. I lost a lot of sleep to RLS on a daily basis. I got on top of it by watching my magnesium/calcium ratio. When the ratio dips too far in calcium's favor, I would need to take magnesium tablets to correct. However the best approach was to mind my calcium intake on a regular basis. Not a diet, but just be mindful of how much calcium is in the food I eat and adjust based on a scope of this past week. I've read that as farm to table processes have changed over the years, we have had a large increase in the amount of calcium going out. I'm no professional and am unqualified to give any advice beyond personal testimony and results of personal research.

SUGGESTION to Matt Gourley about restless legs: your body lacks daily physical exercise, that's why in relaxed state legs becomes restless. Try going for a run, or doing some squats to tire yourself at least a little bit. P.S.: easy to check, any time you feel it, remember how active you have been that day- I bet it will never be a day when you were traveling/running through airports, or having long tiresome shopping walks.

Try propanalol, it's a bood pressure med but helps with akathesia maybe even localized akathesia, which is uncommon but that's my DDX.

oh really!! I have that weird pinch and needle feelings in my legs often, very often. its not hurting but its super annoying and the only way for me to get rid of it is to get up from bed and just walk around, try to distract me. Im fairly sertain it has something to do with when you're tired you get that thing. I've tried telling friends about it but they never heard of it.

@@hky1095 😆 only one or two kinds of magnesium does that. I take a magnesium supplement with 8 different types combined every night for 4 weeks now. The pins and needles in my legs are gone, no diarrhea and sleep like a baby. I researched to make sure I didn't get one that gave me the runs.

love how gourley was just subtly like "oh yeah, i have the thing that actual doctors call restless leg syndrome and not the leg bouncing thing that's constantly misidentified as it by laypeople"

I know what Matt is talking about. I sometimes get those restless legs when I cannot fall asleep and my mind is racing. It feels like you just have to move them and you have no control over it. Sensations like a small tickling feeling and feeling like you should stretch your legs. I don't like it at all but I get those things some times.

I had the itch Conan described. It was a tendon I pulled under the scapula playing tennis.
