Purebreds are fine as long as you get it from a responsible breeder - not everyone wants a full grown dog from the pound and the mysteries that come with it (habits, temperament, health, etc). Rescuing from a shelter is very admirable, but some people need to lay off the real scorn that they throw at those who don't and save it for the truly deplorable animal abusers/puppy mills/ etc.
@changedmaname46348 жыл бұрын
Why full grown dogs? There are many homeless puppies in shelters :)
@errhka8 жыл бұрын
Changedma Name of course, but the majority are full grown.
@privilegedtorta22678 жыл бұрын
Errhka I agree because people are just getting the puppies because they think they are so cute but do they even know the whole purpose of a shelter
@changedmaname46348 жыл бұрын
Errhka it's always better to adopt a full-grown dog who actually needs help but if your argument for getting one from a breeder is that you want a puppy, just get one from a shelter
@errhka8 жыл бұрын
Changedma Name no, that's not the point - some people want a golden retriever, or a GSD, or a Boston terrier, etc. There's nothing wrong with knowing what you are getting if the breeders are responsible. Shelters rarely have puppies of a certain breed available, thus why it's not realistic for them to supplement any demand for a purebred. The holier than thou needs to stop.
@NumeMoon8 жыл бұрын
I have a pure breed, which I got from a breeder a few days before xmas some years ago when my other dog died. It would've been hell to go through that Christmas in such a sad way. The shelter where I live can take weeks to process an application. My other dog is a rescue, but who is the one that's better behaved? My pure breed that I raised from a puppy. That's not to say I don't love my little mix breed rescue... She's so cute and sweet! But anyone that meets my dogs can tell which one I raised from a pup.
@NumeMoon8 жыл бұрын
It's not as easy to find a young puppy at my local shelter. That's why I made the distinction. And one is not "better" than the other, it's just my older dog (the pure breed) was taught from an early age about the rules of our household.
@djokawari18 жыл бұрын
Nume Moon if your only concern with owning a dog is your own personal enjoyment, then yeah. I rescue dogs not because I want personal satisfaction from a well-behaved dog, but because I want to help a dog.
@NumeMoon8 жыл бұрын
djokawari I think it's a mutual satisfaction for the animal and for the pet owner. I've gotten exactly ONE dog from a breeder ONCE in my life due to losing my dog to cancer just days before Christmas that year. It was a decision I made for my family. Everyone was too sad to celebrate, and I found a reputable breeder who became a breeder when her kid got cancer, and she had to stay home with him. Other than my ONE pure breed dog, I've rescued 3 cats and 4 dogs in my life. Judge me if you want, but this was an unusual circumstance that ended up with a good outcome. The breeder I found required me to sign contracts agreeing to only use an AAHA certified vet, I have to feed him a specific diet of high quality food (which means my rescue dog benefits because she eats the same), I had to get him neutered, and if I ever decide I can't keep him, he has to go back to the breeder. I ended up having to go out of state to find a breeder whose policies I respected. My pure bred is 13 years old now. He's healthy, friendly, gentle, and cheerful. Keep in mind this was *NOT A PUPPY MILL.* This breeder had 1 Dam, not a kennel full of them. Don't be confused by what you hear about puppy mills. Each breeder should be judged individually. You can say it's all for the animals, but the truth is altruism is part of your reward. You get something out of it too. To imply I shouldn't do it for mutual satisfaction is just silly. How can you adopt an animal and NOT feel some sense of good?
@NumeMoon8 жыл бұрын
John Smith I did get one more. I have 1 pure breed and 1 rescue, and I'm not adopting more at this time because that's the number of dogs I have time and money to use just for them. If I adopt more, they would all suffer from fewer vet visits and less individual attention.
@djokawari18 жыл бұрын
Nume Moon Doesn't matter if a breeder feeds their dogs caviar and champagne. Breeding dogs when individual American cities are euthanizing half a million dogs per year, just in single cities, is immoral. And financially supporting the pet trade/breeding industry is immoral.

This comes down to *responsible* breeding. I agree that backyard breeders can be idiots, but the accredited breeders that take their time and don't rush into inbred matches, the ones that include a contract to guarantee good health, the ones whose contracts state what kind of food should be fed, that require you to have an AAHA certified vet, and that the dog must return to the breeder if you ever get rid of it, these are the ones that know their business and take it seriously. I didn't go to a puppy mill for my dog. I found this breeder out of state in my search for a well bred pup. We had lost our previous (rescue) dog to cancer just a few days before Xmas, and we were devastated. I know the local shelter would take longer to process our application, so I went with a reputable breeder, not a puppy mill. My other dog is a rescue. And BOTH are awesome companions. But with my pure breed, I got to "meet" his mother, and I got to share my pics of him with other buyers from his liter. It was like joining a small community of puppy love. The woman I got him from had a son with cancer, and she had to quit her job to stay home with her son. Dog breeding was a way for her to do that. She was careful about who she sold to, and there were contracts involved. She told me that the puppies had been handled by her sick son in his bed, which brought the boy comfort and happiness. I still think my Christmas dog was one of the best ways I could have spent my money that year. You can't judge all breeders based on the things you hear about puppy mills.

I don't deny that different breeds of dogs exhibit different behaviors. But the whole idea of a purebred dog is silly. The various breeds of dogs came about by crossbreeding and selection. Sometimes crossbred dogs are suddenly labeled as a new "pure breed," such as the pomsky. If nobody gave it a name it would be a mutt. It's totally arbitrary.
@amic51937 жыл бұрын
reputable breeders would never have anything to do with a 'pomsky' thats a backyard breeder. don't hate reputable breeders because you see idiots do it wrong :) also as far as im aware a 'pomsky' cant even be registered as an actual breed

I own a purebred German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois, and every single dog I've owned since I was a child were from reputable breeders. And I will continue to buy my dogs from breeders till the day I die.
@KatBellerose8 жыл бұрын
I owned two Belgian Malinois at different periods but the breeder was bad and didn't care for her dogs. The first one we got his paw got deformed because she had one of those old wooden windows that you hold open with a stick and it fell on its paw and she didn't do anything. So when she gave it to us, she said he fine, just limps a little but we need to get him use to walking again. But eventually we had to give it to our local animal shelter because we new it wasn't "fine" and we could pay to get its paw fixed and medical bills taken care of. So we gave him to the animal shelter and the owner actually really likes Belgian Malinois so she brought it to the vet herself and it turns out his paw and leg was so damaged (we didn't see any major issues other than the limp and slight paw deformity) that the leg had to be amputated to the shoulder. The shelter owner then kept him to be a shelter dog because she knew no one would adopt him. A few months later we got his brother. Seemed fine but was extremely hyper. We were told that fixing him might calm him down. So we did and it didn't help any. He was more of a farming /working dog. So the police actually took him because they like that breed of dog as well as the German Shepard. So he became a bomb and drug sniffing dog. That was the last of ours dogs and I've now had my cat for 14 years. :)
@savagesweetheart908 жыл бұрын
Katlyn C-M I only buy Malinois from breeders that are overseas, I pay extra and that's completely fine. I like my Mals high driven and hyper because I do French Ring, Mondioring, and PSA (Protection Sports Association) but they are also even tempered. They're the type of breed that needs to be worked for more than a couple hours and needs a job to do or they will destroy your home (I learned that with my very first Mal) This is the type of breed that a novice owner should not have, and the breeders that I know personally always have questions for pending buyers and they have the right to decline someone who isn't fit for a Mal. My first Mal Ra'zok was already showing prey drive at 14 weeks and I started obedience training and protection training that day.
