Assuming he gave about 40,000 to a single person in that amount of time he would have been giving them about 12 million dollars. his yearly salary is about that much now, it was way less back then, he has a net worth of about 85 mill so he dedicated about 1/7 of his entire net worth to his staff. so yeah, he could have bought a lot of things with that 12 million but he decided to be kind about it.
