The greatest to ever play Hockey on and off the ice !! And no disrespect to other greats as Gretzky, Orr, Mario, and many more that where great off the ice, cause that’s where you at another level !!

1:34 that blinking that Gretz mentioned was a facial tic from a head injury that Gordie suffered early in his career. In a game at the old Detroit Olympia Arena, Gordie missed a check and went crashing head-first into the boards, fracturing his skull. He nearly died, but made a full-recovery and went on to become the greatest hockey player ever (I'm from Michigan, so of course I say Gord's the greatest ;) ).

Wayne has admitted he would not have been good when Gordie played. 6 teams & you had to be able to fend for yourself. It would have been a tougher game for him then. Gordie was as tough as they come & could score with the best of them. He was goal scorer, assist maker, defensive player.penalty killer & enforcer all rolled into one. He was the best all around player hockey has ever seen. He could do it all.

Gretzky scored 894 NHL regular season goals to Howe's 801, but it is a fact that for much of Howe's career, the NHL only had a 60-70 game schedule, Gretzky had 80 per season every year except the lockout season. I was wondering how many goals Howe would have scored if he played with an 80 game schedule is entire career, so took the games he played, relative to the full schedule every year (ex: if he played 90% of his games in 70 games, that was 63, in 80, it would have been 72) and I gave him the same goal per game average he had in the season, for the entire 72. Yeah, I know this would not have been 100% accurate but it gives us a good idea of how many goals he would have had, guess what? He would have had roughly 1075... in fairness to Gretzky, I calculated that had the 94-95 season not been locked out, he would have scored roughly 7 more goals for 901. Wanna get technical? Well Howe played 6 years in the WHA where he scored another 174 g, it is a fact that the NHL was stronger, but if he played those years in the NHL and scored even half that many goals, that would have given him 87 more for 1162, Gretzky also, played one WHA season where he got 46 g so half that would be 23, giving 924. Conclusion? I think Howe was a much better goal scorer than Gretzky but Wayne benefitted from a better era in which to score goals.

@@uriah9645 Gordie Howe also played in an NHL of six teams for 21 of those seasons. That pretty much meant that the best players in North America made up just six teams, so there was no leeway. I remember Keith Magnusson defenseman for the Blackhawks and who idolized Gordie. Keith took boxing lessons, and karate etc. In the playoffs he challenged Gordie to a fight. Big mistake. Gordie mopped the ice with him. Gordie worked summers at the cement plant moving bags of cement around. Had wrists and forearms of steel. If Gordie grabbed you, there was no letting go and he worked you like a rag doll.

Howe wasnt the nicest man. He would always cheap shot other players and try to hurt them. He hit Phil Esposito right in the face, on Esposito's first shift in the NHL, just to try and dominate him. No different than sacking the quarterback on the first play. Gordie would intimidate new guys so they wouldnt be tempted to cheap shot him. It also gave him room to make plays, win corner scrums and accelerate. If he didnt have guys clutching, grabbing, slashing and draped over him all night he could be more effective and once you got a taste of an elbow from Mr. Howe you generally kept a respectful distance.
