Hey guys, here's a little update cause we were able to find out more in the meantime. 1) shield can now also be charged directly after reloading phials with circle. No AED cancel necessary anymore. 2) savage axe apparently does ticks if you repeatedly mash the button (not hold it like in Rise)

I looked at some gameplay videos where they charged shield with overcharged phials, it seems to increase the duration from 30s per phial to an estimated 45s per overcharged phial, based on when the shield started flashing.

7:18 After you charge the phials (R2+O), you can see the option to charge your shield directly by pressing/holding O (Shield : Elemental Boost), without doing that round slash anymore

Whenever shield thrust is used, I see an option: "Shield: Elemental Boost" (R2+Triangle+O). It seems also a way to charge the shield? Thanks Capcom I don't need to dance with extra moves to charge the shield anymore.

Tl;DR they are shifting Charge Blade to focus more on using and maintaining Savage Axe rather than SAED like in past games, which in turn, kinda makes it a little more complicated in the sense you also will have to managed Savage Axe's timer and the new overcharged phials as well as your shield now.

Genuinely this shift might make me play CB more, cause I wasn't a fan of SAED spam as much. Now it feels in line with SA but with a shield, and I quite like that. Plus with blocking feeling so crisp... That said I'm still gonna be lance/gunlance gang.

From what I see, its neither. They merged both playstyles. My prefered playstyle in world was sniping heads with AEDs and savage axe active. This is just that but official. Savage axe promoted staying in axe mode for as long as possible, while SAED did that for SnS. Now the modes have been balanced by merging and somewhat nerfing both modes. You want to stay in sns to overcharge and activate savage axe, also focus mode, and in Axe mode you want to combo to make use of those limitoess phials and finish with an SAED, since damage on the SAED might be huge, and repeat the cycle again. I just hope guard points arent overshadowed by perfect guards.

I was a fan of SAED gameplay in World, but now it's apparently blocked behind a lot of stuff. At least we had two playstyles before, but now, you inevitably have to play towards Savage Axe in some capacity. At least I hope SAED rewards the player with tons of damage.

Being able to turn around to do a AED after a guard is a game changer for this weapon. This solves my biggest complaint about guardpointing with CB in world. Most monster attacks put themselves behind us but wilds gives us a way to still punish the monster. It’s a godsend

I hope that guard points are counted as perfect guards, also that there is a benefit for using them. Extra damage would be great, something like CMS. But I wouldnt mind having utility, like increased charge compared to previous games.

It seems like for all weapons they're making attacks somewhat faster, more moves combo into each other, and resource management easier. Combat is going to feel so fluid. I hope monsters can keep up.

CB genuinelly needed this change. In Iceborn mid to endgame, all the slow recovery animations cause you to trade damage with the monsters most of the time to actually have decent dps on CB.

Honestly, I like the changes to CB, encouraging the use of axe mode for something other then a SAED vehicle is only a good change. Literally an entire move set that people don't touch because 'SAED spam optimal'. The addition of reduced phial usage and requiring Axe combos to SAED is only healthy for the weapon's identity going forward. I know people joke all the time about needing a degree to use CB but literally once you know how to charge your shield, the weapon is far from complex, especially if you're just spamming SAED (which most people are). Also with focus mode you could probably just aim your AED away first, and then Focus mode to turn into your SAED if you're really concerned about that one extra Phial for damage on a wake-up.

"Buffing the playstyle" nothing is buffed. You cannot manually get into savage axe without a precondition met. You cannot get into SAED without performing a 6 second combo first. Everything here got nerfed.

I was slightly worried about the SAED change, but with how much they're buffing axe mode, I'm just happy now. The weapon dmg is no longer so back loaded, since phial usage is so much more manageable now we can use more axe attacks than just upswing and downswing like in Iceborne savage axe. All in all I'm incredibly satisfied with this version.

This is how I wanted to use the CB since its introduction! I'm a Lance main, but I play around with a few other weapons. I may be a GL/CB main in wilds... even though I feel guilty about it. The 5 other Lance mains will have to shoulder the burden.

Yes climbing on top of dead monsters is the best new features to have. It adds more layer of verticality on the battlefield, kinda like how I love to fight Almudron because it creates mud platfroms, now every turf war potentially have "platforms" to hop off from, allowing me to do jumping attack, it makes each encounter unique experience.

Savage Axe does have hit lag in Wilds, you just have to hold down the attack button instead of pressing it .

I've never been a fan of the SAED spam style of Charge Blade, my favourite incarnation of the weapon has been Valour style back in GU as a result. While I'd like SAED to be buffed so it's still a good knockdown punish, I really can't express how much I love the way the weapon plays now, savage axe making basically all of Axe mode's attacks barring AED, the follow-up and SAED cost-free is incredible and it's got such a fun overall feel and flow to it. Definitely going to be my main for Wilds.

so you play normally with sword and axe until an opportunity arises (perfect guard, mount, focus attack) to go into savage mode, you then get a long time to be in that mode before resetting

(based on what Jono said during the dev Livestream) I don't think you need to perfect guard to trigger a clash, you just need to be guarding and be hit by a specific attack

I dont know how to feel about the change to the axe mode straight into SAED combo. I think the new combo moves look cool. It feels like they want us to use axe mode more which is neat. I wish we still had the convenience of waking a monster by going to axemode and doing a SAED rather than doing that whole AED follow up SAED combo

I’m a CB main but when I played the beta none of my attacks were hitting. It was like the monsters hit boxes were really small. Very frustrating, hope to have a better experience during full release. Looks promising based on this video.

7:41 you mentioned perfect guards dealing damage and questioned the point of guard points. I wonder if they've been combined in some way, say for example morph out of axe and an attack hits your shield, does that guard point get counted as a "perfect guard", or like it would proc the skill offensive guard

So overflow boosts phials overall, meaning it's damage output and time it adds. Power axe mode can still buzzsaw. It just half's phial useage now as well. With both active you don't use any phials until you use them via shield or SAED. Also you can deposit phials directly into your shield now

the over charge made it so you had a partial charge of your phials ready to go after a SAED. that way you could just straight back into combat a bit without needing to fully recharge them.

I feel like this takes away the fluidity of SAED. Elemental SAEDs are 100% stronger then impacts, but if their taking these changes into consideration after RISE, they took away savage axe (kinda) and they basically made playing CB more comfortable by just spamming SAED. The new moves are cool n all but SAED DPS specifically only SAED will drop as the monster will 100% move from an opening that you could have SAED'd.

Ooooo, this looks great! ...Mostly. Not being able to immediately use the SAED is quite concerning since it'll be that much harder to hit mobile monsters with it due to the extra time required, but on the flip side being able to keep swinging in axe mode for longer is gonna make CB feel even comfier. But I guess Savage Axe doesn't charge your phials anymore, just reduces consumption? Strange, but I guess it works too.

I see a greater priority for savage axe, but I remember it being clunky and slow even with the switch skill in rise.
