Lesson 6: Aircraft Flight Instruments
This next lesson will focus on Flight Instruments. Being that the powerplant is the heart and soul of an aircraft, the flight instruments are the eyes and ears.
This section will go into great depth on how the pitot-static system operates, and which instruments are connected. They are the altimeter, airspeed indicator, and vertical speed indicator.
We will also discuss the gyro system, which makes up the attitude indicator, turn coordinator, and heading indicator.

Dear Scoot, i have noticed a slight mistake at 1hour and 7 minutes of this video lesson, when you said turning 360 degrees in 2 minutes, and it is exactly 3 degrees per minutes instead of 3 degrees per second. By the way i love your PPL video lessons, thanks a lot

“When going from cold to hot look out below.” High density = high pressure =cold air. Low density=low pressure=hot air. If you are flying 5000 MSL and suddenly your altimeter indicator starts telling you that in fact you are descending you apply power and play catch up with the indicator finally you see you stabilized at 5000 IA but in reality you have just climbed up to 6000 MSL because of hot air that you have entered without realizing that that air has lower air density and lower pressure. Now let’s say you are flying 5000 MSL and your altimeter starts indicating a climb so you back off the throttle and descend. You finally stop the indicated climb and the altimeter is at 5000 IA. I’m reality you have flown into a cold front and high density and high pressure which made you descend down to 4000 MSL without you realizing that. This can be very dangerous.

Hello dear teacher Scoot Leach, just wanted to warn you about a slight mistake in this course, at 1h 7 minutes, you talk about turning 360 degrees in 2 minutes then you say it is exactly 3 degrees by 1 minute instead of 3 degrees by 1 second, that's it, just for people not to learn something wrong, thanks sorry if I bother you with this. By the way I love your PPL ground course.

I fly out of KCFO just outside of Denver International and we have to learn density altitude right off the bat compared to those who learn to fly at sea level.

Very nice video. Do you have a video on how to trouble shoot these instruments? I have a vertical speed indicator and an altimeter installed on my costal sail boat in Florida and they don't seem to be working.
