I didn't take anything with me in 1978 to Basic Training , cause the Army issues same then as today. I spent 13wks Basic at Fort Ord an then went onto AIT to Fort Dix N.J. an afterwards shipped to Southeast Asia.

I was drafted into the Army in 1968 during the Vietnam war. NOBODY failed basic training during that period, the Drill Sergeants “fixed” it so everybody graduated basic training. I saw drill sergeants firing for trainees who couldn’t qualify on the firing range, just so they could pass the rifle qualifications & graduate basic trading. Uncle Sam needed body counts in the ‘Nam!

I was drafted in July 1969 and my basic training was a lot different than it is now. Sargent Swartz talked about buying running shoes. We did everything in combat boots. There was no such thing in the army basic training as running shoes. I made it through basic and AIT. Shipped out for Viet Nam in Jan. 1970. Made it through there too (thank goodness). I'm 73 yrs. old now and still remember some of my basic and AIT. Some things you just can't seem to forget. I didn't like the military when I was in but, I'm thankfull for the experience. Bob

I'm writing a memoir about my experience in the Army from start to finish and the chapter I'm working on right now is about reception. When I enlisted in 2010, between what videos were around and word from the recruiters, the specifics about reception were vague at best while there was more of an emphasis on the actual BCT experience. I'm glad you made this video and didn't just summarize the reception experience. Instead, you went into detail about the things many of us back then weren't specifically warned about.

I don’t remember having much more than the clothes on my back when I got to reception of course that was 50 years ago. I was given 89 dollars in cash to buy toiletries and cigarettes different army back then I guess in basic rest meant smoke ‘‘em if you got ‘em borrow em if you don’t. Very interesting to see how things are different now. Thanks for the videos. I did end up having a lot of respect for my Drill instructors you guys do a hell of a job.

I got discharged medically from basic(don’t want too talk about it and had a shit ton of stuff that’s permantly disqualifing that I didn’t know I even had I found out about one thing before I shipped so I was seeing if I could get a waiver in the moment of truth but it was too late)but I come back and watches these because I miss it tbh I just want too go back but these just bring back memories of being there I really wanted too become a soilder but ig I can’t best of luck too everyone heading too basic watching this

Went to Ft Benning/Moore in late 2022. The reception there is EXTREMELY long, I was there 3 weeks and many of my battles were there up to 6. With this long of a time span, everyone would be squared away by ship right? No. Many of us had boots that didn't fit correctly they refused to replace, pay issues they said our unit would fix, missing key gear or hygiene items that would be a troop problem, and almost no one had anywhere close to the amount of patches we were supposed to have. This even included name tags, where some never received one at all until the week before HBL in White phase. Even more irritating, many of us had no access to outlets during our 30 minute phone time, which was just a "sucks to be you" moment. Topping it off, you are absolutely not allowed to be caught exercising. At all. Unless it was the laughably small amount of corrective action they are allowed to take, you are condemned to sitting and doing nothing but wait. The day before ship, many of us never had our follow-up barber appointment. Once again... "they'll take care of it at troop". I found everyone always agreed that the HARDEST part of OSUT in Ft Benning/Moore is reception.

I went to reception at 30th ag 4 months ago. People told me that we would go to the stations ourselves and be there only a few days. We did not do that. We were there for 2 weeks and the drill seargents took the whole company to the stations each day. We didnt get our OCPs until after we got our shots and we didnt get our dress uniforms until after we turned green. I didnt think it sucked very much, the civillians werent mean to most people in our company because we talked to them with respect. Infantry is held to higher preformance and moral standards when speaking to civillians.

I saw in the video you said depending on what day you ship out it may be a month until you get paid? also I ship out for basic on a Monday and if reception takes a week my first day would of basic would be the 30th
