Have you ever watched a column of ants going back and forth entering your home in search of food? Or observed them carrying heavy loads of food or leaves or other objects into their nests?. These are fascinating creatures.
Ants are considerably older than previously believed, having originated 140 million to 168 million years ago. They only began to diversify about 100 million years ago in concert with the flowering plants.
Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from vespoid wasp ancestors in the Cretaceous period.
Ants are pretty much everywhere. There are more than 14,000 different species, spread over every continent except Antarctica, and researchers have estimated that there are more than four quadrillion individual ants on earth.
So, when time allows, stop and observe how ants perform their chores and prepare their nests for winter.
