As a young adult, I would always get up on Saturday mornings, pour myself a bowl of cereal, and sit down for Powerblock TV. Two hours of mechanics going ham. That's why I adore this channel. It brings back the same feeling that I had as a young adult watching that on Saturday morning. Thanks for giving me that blast of nostalgia, Throtl. Very much appreciate it! \m/

I still think it is a very slightly bent valve stem on cyl 6. That caused the valve guide to wear and also wore out the valve stem seal letting oil in there causing that weird misfire. Very likely happened when the stock intercooler failed and it ate coolant. I’d check all the valves and guides when you guys rebuild that thing🍺 Let us know that car drove me and Mike crazy😂
@LarrySoliman6 ай бұрын
this has to be the only answer.
@clifbradley5 ай бұрын
I think when it went low on oil, the heat built up and dried out those stem Seals. But the lobe on the crankshaft being so bad makes me think that the oil starvation was so bad that it was microwelding when the car stopped. I didn't see him pull the valve stems though.

I think the pitting on the internal parts came from sitting for a few months. The engine failed in hands of the previous owner and the repair bill being for probably, replacing the engine long block, the owner left the car sitting until he figured something out. That exhaust valve stayed open when the engine shut off and the moisture creep from there to the internals. Then he just gave it as trade in, hoping for the dealer to not find out about the problem. Then you bought it.

A good condition S55 with just studs is capable of pretty decent HP. BTW Carbon Buildup is a common issue for S55, where fuel is sprayed directly into the combustion chamber instead of the intake manifold. These deposits can reduce airflow, performance, and fuel efficiency, and cause rough idle, misfires, and cold start issues.

If you rebuild it, change out the OEM crankhub to a 4-pin or 2-pin keyed crankhub! Since, you're already taking it apart and get an upgraded valve cover! Those are the main concerns for the S55 platform

@TSM136 ай бұрын
There is a known issue with the S55 where the exhaust cam isn’t torqued down correctly from factory and it “floats”. It’s usually most notable by a rattling sound on a cold start that goes away. Could the exhaust cam have just become “loose” towards cylinder 6 which caused it to wear more? A previous fault that has just got worse over time? My M2 Comp (S55) had it and BMW replaced the cam and carrier under warranty.
@Ooogs-h1i5 ай бұрын
That's what I was thinking. Same happened to my f80 but when I inspected the cam lobes they all looked good so I just bought new bolts and reinstalled making sure to torque to the correct spec and it solved it.

To me, it seems most likely that it was low on oil or had old oil that wasn't lubricating properly that caused the lifter to wear first and the worn out lifter caused the cam to wear unevenly. From my experience, it's usually the lifters that fail first
