This is a really thoughtful look at both ToTK and BoTW and what sets them apart. It's easy to get caught up in how much bigger and busier ToTK feels, especially with it still being so new. But BoTW, I think, captured a certain feeling that can't be replicated. While it may seem small now compared to its sequel, it's special in its own way, owing mainly to the fact that the experience was so unique and personal for everyone it touched. After having played ToTK for a solid 90 hours or so, I'm also having a hard time deciding which game I think it's better. Maybe one doesn't HAVE to be better. Maybe they're just different.

I have a lot of internal conflict when it comes to this game. I’ve heard so much people say that TOTK makes BOTW feel like a prototype and that if you haven’t played it, you should skip it and go straight to TOTK. But there’s something in BOWT that TOTK has lost. The exploration in BOTW is soooo important to what makes that game so special to me and to a lot of people, I think. Those moments where you are going from place to place simply riding your horse, walking, gliding, going through these vast hills of beautiful green grass accompanied by the nice piano themes. That simplicity in the way that you explored Hyrule in BOTW. The peacefulness, the time and space that the game gives you to take in that undeniably massive world. That’s all lost in TOTK. The game is constantly throwing things at you to skip big portions of the map. You can build your own vehicles and just go from mission to mission. And I understand why they did that. It’s the same Hyrule that in BOTW, even with the changes, it’s still really similar, so you want the player to be able to traverse it really fast. But that’s exactly the reason why I wouldn’t tell people to go directly into this game, because in doing so, you might loose the opportunity to experience the Hyrule of BOTW, one that is more simple, but so captivating. And that’s just one of the things that I’ve been conflicted about. I also think that this game has tried to do so much and has done very little perfectly. Quantity over quality. Like yeah, there are 3 layers of map, but 70% of the Sky Islands are the same “bring the green rock to this place to get a Shrine” puzzle, and the Depths, though genuinely impressive at first, you soon realize that you can see everything that you’ll find down there in 2 hours max: Light Roots, enemy camps, a new boss, repeated main bosses, and the Mines (which are so uninteresting). I just would’ve prefer to get 1 new later and have it be reeeeaaally filled with new and interesting things. I love a lot of things about this game, it is better than most games that come out every year. Like the powers are insane, and I think we sometimes we take them for granted, but the amount of work that has gone behind creating all these powers must be insane and I have huge appreciation to the programmers who worked on them. But as a pack, the overall game, I honestly don’t think that it is a 10/10.

BOTW and TOTK are separate and distinct experiences. For example I feel like I prefer the story and the cutscenes of BOTW over TOTK since they focus on the characters, their feelings and flaws as well as humanizing Zelda while TOTK cutscenes are all about the lore and the plot.
@carnage0685 Жыл бұрын
@@kungolaf4499 Cutscenes are indeed better in BOTW. Aside from like, Rauru, Mineru, and Sonia, nobody felt like an actual character. Urbosa, Daruk, and Revali all felt like real characters to me. Well, I guess it's 3 for 3, but there really wasn't any reason they couldn't have made the Sages actual characters. I also prefer Calamity Ganon over Ganondorf. Calamity Ganon was really damn unique and interesting, so hearing he was just an offshoot of Ganondorf in TOTK was really disappointing. I like to pretend that TOTK doesn't even exist sometimes for that reason, and Calamity Ganon is still what he was in 2017.
@z.amelius Жыл бұрын
@@carnage0685 I dislike how every Zonai ruin is now linked to Rauru sealing Ganondorf. There's no reason for Thyphlo Ruins to be a monument to the loyalty of the sages, etc. and the insistence that everything tie back to that is strange to me. Zelda has so much less personality too. The BOTW memories established her as a very bright, enthusiastic girl crushed by the pressure placed on her to fulfill her role. She was fighting not to lose herself. Your motivation to fight Ganon in BOTW is freeing Zelda. She can handle him---she's been handling him---but you love her, and you want her to be free. In TOTK, we barely get to see her as a person in the past. She talks about Link, she learns about the secret stones (really funny name btw), but she doesn't behave like Zelda. I would've liked to see some memories of her geeking out over things in the past, snapping photos with the Purah pad, just generally being Zelda. There are a lot of things TOTK does right, but I'm not convinced Nintendo understands why BOTW's storytelling formula worked. But this is also the third major title Fujibayashi has directed in the last decade, and the pattern seems pretty clear. He can craft an amazing, operatic story on a linear track, or a minimal story with complexity implied in the world, but he can't combine the two.

@@z.amelius She does geek out with Mineru within in-game texts from the past. Rauru and Sonia represent parental figures she never had and according to the creators a big goal with her character in this game was her figuring out who she wants to be, her future, and learning more about herself and being a leader and we do get to see some of that. Also there was serious shit going on and she's in her 20's now, she can't be goofing off in serious cutscenes.
@noahsmethers9339 Жыл бұрын
@@z.amelius Zelda shows a lot of maturity within the memories of TotK. She literally lives through an entire war, one in a world she is unfamiliar with, so she must use her powers for good, but learn what good means, how to judge someone, learning tactics and how friendships and unions prosper. While it's not as cheerful, expressive, doesn't have the pressure of being the princess, and isn't as focused on her own interests, she simultaneously is. She learns to live with Sonia and Rauru, with the two of them acting as parental figures, because she has to learn how to grow up all over again. She still has this overwhelming responsibility, but this time as a sage. She takes what she learns from being the sage and from fighting in the war, and watching her newfound parental figures sacrifice themselves for the name of the kingdom, and knowing things from the future. The deku tree tells her about the master sword, and we can see how the spirits of the champions continue to fight for the greater good long after their time. And so Zelda, like Rauru and Sonia, Link throwing himself after Zelda in the opening sequence, sacrifices herself, letting her friends carry on hope of the future, just like she was burdened with when the champions perished. She takes everything she learns across the memories, and bundles it into one message to the player, a message that conveys many feelings. And to respond to your first statement, that the Zonai ruins are repetitive, I agree. They become slightly annoying, but it has more meaning if you look into it. Rauru sacrificed himself, basically ending the race of Zonai. So the Zonai ruins to all depict Rauru makes perfect sense. It marks the end of the Zonai, the way the Zonai sacrificed themselves, their tech, advantage, and more, all within the form of King Rauru. Yes, I realize Mineru is still alive during TotK, technically Rauru is at the beginning, but they aren't anything but force ghosts. The Zonai all died with the end of the Imprisoning War

Without going into detail for any people who have yet to finish the game, it is the same as the original in that you are placed at an autosave just before the final boss. To me this diminishes the impact of the boss fight, as it has no impact on the world itself and while I understand from a development and gameplay point that people will still want to play and that changing too much would effect the gameplay loop in a big way, I still feel cheated in a way. In that game, everything was fresh and new, and full of WONDER, but the world was super cohesive (no ugly geometry in the sky for example haha). And, yes, more peaceful and willing to take its time. Yet I've ALWAYS SAID that I'd never replay it, because that's the perfect one time experience for me. In TOTK, I used vehicles to rush through previously explored areas (which there was WAY too much of) and the new areas were just lacking in variety. The game kept me hooked for weeks and I replayed it two more times. Once when master mode came out and later on again with very legal pc software and mods. I remember spending hours in Hebra and Faron in order to see everything even if there wasn't any main story there. totk just didn't grip me as much, I loved the main story a lot but once I was done with it, I just went to ganon and beat the game. The more linear story, in a way, distracted me from the open world. I messed around on the sky islands a bit during and after the Rito questline but after that just sorta followed to road. The underground, while cool at first didn't really interest me after the first few hours of being there, because everything just looks the same. Ultimately my biggest problem with totk isn't that it's too big, but rather that exploring its full scope didn't feel worth it to me after I finished the story.
@Dark_sparky Жыл бұрын
I have three comments. TL:DR = game is better without guardians, I surprisingly prefer the new way of finding memories, and clarification that the game feel in BoTW and ToTK are actually basically the same. 1) One of the most underrated changes for TotK in my opinion is the general removal of guardians. I'm a pretty competent gamer, and I was certainly capable of dealing with them when I was intentionally confronting them and was prepared. I played the game casually so I didn't ever actually go out of my way to actively seek to perfect my timing against an enemy that could one shot me. That said, with the amount of times that I ran into guardians completely unprepared and was forced to flee, it really felt that guardians were a contrived way to limit exploration, and while they were cool tests of skill at first they became an annoying chore later on. For a game that prided itself on the freedom to explore BotW seriously limited it with the use of Guardians. It's not that I think they should have never existed, I just felt like they were far overused in BotW. Not having them in TotK felt so freeing. The lack of having to deal with the prospect of being one shot from across the map meant the actual surface was much more enjoyable to explore. Granted they wouldn't have worked because people would have just used vehicles to protect them from the beams in TotK but the point is that playing TotK ironically feels much more like taking a "Breath of the Wild" than BotW does in my opinion. 2) I actually much prefer the new implementation of memories. It's true that the new system for memories is far more obvious, less of a challenge, and much more contrived. I believe, with that it is actually a strength of the game. Playing through the entirety the main quests of BotW I only ever organically happened upon (or noticed) a single memory. It left the story remarkably lacking in an organic playthrough. If you add on my first point about feeling as though the world of BotW is far less accessible/enticing, actually looking for the memories felt like much more of a chore in BotW than in TotK despite TotK feeling more repetitive with regards to the experience. I've loved zelda games since before I can remember, but I am an adult now and really did not want to invest the time needed to find the memories (without looking them up) in BotW. Elden ring for instance had the same idea with the paintings, but I found in an organic playthrough of Elden Ring the uniqueness of the geographical features made the locations of the painted vistas more reasonable to deduce even when the locations were still in accessible(while not being a complete cakewalk to figure out). I just felt that the memories were buried too much in exploration and deduction puzzles in BotW that they served little purpose to the main story of the game. I genuinely found the cryptic item descriptions in souls games more engaging as a means of intaking lore than the BotW memories. I know not everyone will agree with this, especially with the souls comparision but the point is the story is much more digestible in TotK because of this change. 3) Slight correction/clarification: While technically "game feel" doesn't have an official definition (to my knowledge) it is my understanding as I had been taught in my game design courses at university that Steve Swink (the person who popularized the phrase) intended for it to refer to the sensory feeling rather exclusively as opposed to the emotions invoked. While even Steve Swink acknowledges that there is no agreed upon definition, he popularized the study of game feel because people generally found useful the provided guidelines and proposed definition that he put forth. I am going off of memory here and may be wrong, but reading his book he does mention aesthetic but he refers to the aesthetic of the core mechanics not game as a whole. To my understanding game feel, in an academic sense at least, refers to the apparent sensation of playing something with real time controls. It is pretty intentionally separated from the emotional responses induced by a game. One thing my prof used as an example to explain this was that music for instance would not be considered part of game feel if it is intended to set tonal atmosphere or invoke emotional responses, it may very rarely be considered a component of the game feel if the world and the player interact with each beat of the song like in the uptown fuck level in Sackboy: A Big Adventure or a rhythm game like Hi-Fi rush. The reason this distinction is important is because it provides a framework of understanding how to improve the feel interacting with the game on a mechanical level. In this regard BoTW and ToTK are mostly the same if not entirely the same.

I absolutely hate when people say that Breath of the Wild i just a "beta" or "tech demo" of Tears of the Kingdom like wtf, Breath of the Wild was amazing when it came out, and it still holds up today. While totk may have many new features and enhancements, BotW still has a few unique things that give it a slight edge imo. Calling botw a beta or tech demo is just absolutely unhinged and complete slander against the game. People just seem to have forgotten botw and say they'll never go back to it when tears exist. But i could give a whole list of reasons to go back to botw, one of the biggest things it does best being story. Totk's sages are a joke and the main plot beats are all copypasted from botw, though I must say the ending of totk is incredible. Honestly the only thing i prefer about totk's world is that it feels less empty and more alive. But it also feels really cluttered and grindy.

TOTK is definitely better than BOTW. BUT...that doesn't make BOTW a worse game. I know that doesn't make sense, but that's the best I can do. It's hard to describe. Ultimately, even though the games feature the same world (even though things have changed a lot in TOTK), the "feel" is dramatically different. BOTW is post-apocolyptic. Hyrule is gone, with nothing but ruins. TOTK is a kingdom in the midst of rebuilding.
@Cometstarlight Жыл бұрын
No, that does make sense. Just because you think Tears is better, it doesn’t mean Breath is lesser for it. If anything, playing both gives me a greater appreciation for the other. They both invoke different feelings and themes. Breath feels more lonely as you wake up in a world where very little people know you and you (as Link) don’t remember anything. Tears feels more connected in that people know you and are super concerned for you when you go missing. I think you hit the nail on the head with saying Breath is post apocalyptic and Tears is during reconstruction. Completely different vibes from the people.

Ive recently re-observed my perspective on Breath of the Wild and your take on it is a lot like mine. I have this strange appreciation of how that game can be.......boring. And on one hand its something that constantly makes me want to put the game down but at the same time its also kind of the source of its identity. I dont know another game like that that can feel like it feels whenever i went to the forest with my brother and father just to witness....silence. That silence that is so desperately needed in todays world. Where nature and the sounds of Gods creations is all you can hear and nothing but the beats of your own heart and mind are left to distract you. Silence is such a key reason why Breath is so damn memorable and beautiful and despite this being a double edged sword in terms of gameplay and enjoyability, i appreciate it more now than ever. I still maintain the story could have definitely been better done, despite my more fond memory towards it nowadays, but it certainly needed to be more like the older titles in that regard. I see no reason not to integrate the more classic Zelda elements we know and love into a larger world. Even if that world isnt as big as this game. Even if it is Hyrule or not. Great take and i appreciate your perspectives on these two giant influences in the open world genre.

I'm not sure what you mean by Totk having only one save file. You just create a new switch account. BotW understandably had 2 slots, but only because there was master mode. If you select "New Game" on either Botw or TotK, it will immediately ask if you want to overwrite data.

@nicotermina Жыл бұрын
Great analysis. While you have mixed feelings on which game you prefer, my situation is clear. BotW is my favourite game of all time and I dislike TotK. You can't spend 6 years developing TotK and give us the Zelda game with the least NEW content of any game in the series. The amount of copy and paste here is ridiculous. Ssying TotK is bigger than BotW is like giving a 5"5 man massive stilts and saying he's taller than Lebron James. It's only bigger because it's using content that isn't its own. Also, on the topic of the story. TotK has better cutscenes and more engaging moments than BotW but the story is a mess, it's full of plot holes and the continuity from BotW is almost non existent. The story doesn't work and the only good plot twist is ruined without a satisfying explanation just because they needed a happy ending. On top of all this, the story is a copy and paste of Ocarina's story. At least BotW's story is unique, actually works, compliments the gameplay and serves its purpose despite how simple and shallow it is.
@stefanklietsch5500 Жыл бұрын
The story in TotK has its problems, but being a "copy and paste of Ocarina's story" is not one of them. Sure we have the false pledge of fealty by Ganondorf and the recruitment of the sages, but there is little else in common in terms of events or tone. Ganondorf does not really "win" in quite the same way as he does on Ocarina, and suffers a more definitive defeat. The sages play a much more active role in events. For me the selling point of TotK is not that it has more depth of content than BotW, but that there is stronger conveyance of the stakes at hand and an opportunity to see Hyrule in an evolved state. It is the only Zelda game that allows you to revisit an older map and witness the growth and change of past characters and locations. But I do agree that having more continuity from BotW would have been better.
@nicotermina Жыл бұрын
@@stefanklietsch5500 While calling TotK's story a copy and paste of Ocarina's is hyperbole on my part, it's still true that TotK is lifting many of Ocarina's story's core elements. The memory system in TotK is done poorly, you always going to discover story elements out of order on your first play through which takes you well into sequence breaking territory seeing as the game tries to continue acting like the big reveal you discovered hasn't been revealed yet. My proposal to improve TotK's story telling would be to have 2 types of memories. Ones focusing on Ganondorf's story and ones focusing on Zelda's story. The Ganondorf ones are told chronologically through the main quest regardless of which dungeon order you choose and replace those annoying reapeted cutscenes about the imprisoning war. The Zelda ones are still told through the geoglyphs but dive deeper into the founding of Hyrule, Rauru and Sonia's story and the Gerudo tribes' relationship with Ganondorf (why some side with him and why some oppose him).
@jamaalfridge Жыл бұрын
For me, TOTK is the better game, but it's hard to perceive because I've explored so much less of it. Like you said, I went to check on things I remember, and once that itch was scratched, I moved on to other more intriguing things. For instance, though the Depths scare me, I have pressed through quite a bit of it, more than I would have anticipated. The other thing I think this game has over BOTW is the feeling of comraderie. Even comparing the champions' abilities and the sages' vows, I love that it's not all on me to activate them. A well-placed Tulin's arrow bailed me out a couple times. Sometimes I could just hang back and let my team fight for me or soften up my opponents. It feels good not to be alone.
@timothygriffith2740 Жыл бұрын
I would have much preferred 4 or 5 dungeons that when beat, lit up a large chunk of the map. Having 150 ish light roots that are solely there to unlock the map is literally just busy work. It's why the depths FEEL like they have so much material. When in actuality, there's just a ton of running around lighting lightroot after Lightroot after Lightroot and then, "oh hey here's a mine! Fight the yiga clan....again". It would have made so much more sense to have the mines connected to the light/map of the depths. Have the locations to them be found all throughout the other 2 maps through small quests, word of mouth, hidden maps ect. Hell even have the mines more region specific so you need to get certain items or gear from the surface (like the fire temple) to be able to go beat the dungeon. Cus as it stands right now, the light roots serve no real purpose other than making traversing the depths a bit easier. But if you didn't do any Lightroots, nothing changes

In some ways I agree, others I don't. I feel like it's addressed within the video that the story's structure changes as you get older or different things happen. TotK shows learning from loss, and not the full feeling of it. BotW shows more of that.

Im an old gamer. I played a bit of Zelda on the snes, not enough to care- i was Sega. Played a bit of ocarina of time a a few minutes of majoras masks, mostly on my friends save file- I was a Sony guy. I ended up breaking my leg in 2021. Stuck in hospital rehab. Maybe the new zelda games are fun" so I grabbed my BOTW and played.......... and played........ and played........ im near the end if TOTK now. Its just...... it really is a fantastic game. This comment is on story only. I think BOTW actually has a better story. Maybe if TOTK has a DLC story like BOTW did, my opinion may change. Spoilers ahead. In BOTW, Link starts with nothing and ventures out into the world. Upon completion of the tutorial, Link's tasks are recover his memory and save Zelda. The memories are of a time before, full of hope, character, charm. You experience Zelda's emotions and her employment status with Link. She goes from disgust to his servitude, to her admiration for his loyalty (and also love if you want to get into that realm). A kingdom falls and countless others lose their lives, including Zelda losing her Father Figure whom she last spoke they argued. Everyone she has ever known is dead. Especially her mother figure Urbosa. She is devastated, distraught. She bawls out and Link comforts her. Link nearly died. You learn the world is hanging on by a thread that weakens as Zelda's power slowly declines. Upon saving the world, Zelda re-appears, wondering if Link truly remembers her. You've done it, you've won. In TOTK, you walk down a very long hallway. Zelda, ever impressed by ruins, is overjoyed at the discovery. She also shows great concern for Link after defeating 3 bats. The demon king wakes up. The Master Sword is broken. Zelda has vanished. Link has lost an arm. Link awakes, with a new arm, a broken sword, and a spirit calling out to him. You venture out into the islands of the sky. Upon completion of the tutorial, your task is to save Zelda. Link lands on the ground, learns the world has changed and Zelda has been spotted. His task? Save the villages and learn what happened to Zelda. The geoglyphs, show you memories from a time long ago that focus on Rauru, Sonia and Zelda (Mineru is present in what 3 memories) showing what became of Zelda. You learn her quest to get back to the present. You watch her lose her mother figure, Sonia. She loses her "king" in Rauru (someone who is the opposite of father). She sacrifices herself to become a dragon. Upon winning, you catch Zelda as she falls. You've done it, you've won. Zelda upon waking up, questions why Link is there. Very subdued in concern in comparison to her first interaction when Link fought 3 bats. "How are you....But I was...." Sure, she may be in shock from becoming a dragon and returning to a human form, which this immediately subsides when she realizes that the Demon King is dead. She should be overjoyed and overcome with emotion. She was willing to give up her life, and now she's back, the world is saved and her knight is in front of her all healed up. Where's the emotion from the first game? She bawled her eyes out over losing everything. Here? She has been given everything back (except Sonia, Rauru, the sages), and she's like. "I felt a warm-loving embrace, Link I met so many wonderful people. Oh, Link, I'm home!" BOTW Zelda and TOTK Zelda are not the same character. Heck, even Zelda at the start of the game is not the same as the final scenes. She lacks so much emotion.

I love TOTK for what it is by I can't help but feel dissapointed by what it isn't. It's not really sequel enough, it's almost just an alternative version of BOTW that competing developers had in their mind. I wish they truly expanded on the first one, and delved deeper into thr Ancient tech and sheikah, rather than uproot it completely without acknowledgement and switch to this Zonai. Plus I miss the ancient weapons so much.

BOTW was truly heavenly when it first came out. Whilst TOTK is the ultimate improvement, with the reused map and world, it just doesn't hit as big as botw did. Whilst I can only really see myself enjoying TOTK over BOTW for the years to come, botw will always be remembered for its nostalgia and how melancholic that game was with its story, mood and atmosphere !

10:23 To my memory, Joseph Anderson doesn't just argue that shrines shouldn't have multiple solutions or shortcut solutions, but specifically multiple boring solutions. The problem with the BotW wind puzzle in his view, and in mine, isn't that the puzzle's intended solution can be bypassed, but that it's so easily bypassed with the very first solution that comes to mind (because that exact thing was taught in the tutorial shrine). There's plenty of satisfaction to be had by using a particularly smart approach to bypass the intended solution, but only if your solution is actually smart. When you look at a shrine puzzle and for the umpteenth time you notice that you can skip the puzzle with a rocket before you even understand what the the puzzle is, it really starts to feel less like you're outsmarting the game designer, and more like the game designer just didn't care to make a puzzle that takes into account Link's basic abilities.
@puffmain3276 Жыл бұрын
I'm tired of people saying that TotK is just better BotW, when they really accomplish different things. BotW had a much more realistic feel of exploration. You couldn't just strap some fans to a steering stick and fly over everything, you had to get everywhere on your own two feet, or maybe those of your trusty horse. This made exploration just so much more fun, as even if along the way there isn't much to do, you're taking in the landscape and searching for chests or korok seeds. I honestly think TotK's story is garbage against BotW's. One problem is that the memories all boil down to (spoilers): Ganon is evil (which we already knew), Sonia dies, and Zelda becomes a dragon. In BotW, you slowly learn more and more about Link's old life, about the people he knew, and importantly, about Zelda. TotK's memories just feel redundant, telling you the same thing over and over (demon king, secret stone? lol)
