Spring 2020, University of North Texas(UNT) students embarked on an interesting journey. They took a course titled, Interactive Community Video, taught by Carla Carter-Bishop. The goal of this course each semester is to teach students how to use media to interact and provide a service for the communities around them. This semester, the chosen community was a group of 5th graders learning about the Civil Rights Movement. UNT students visited the 5th graders at Newton Rayzor Elementary and began teaching them documentary production skills with the hopes of having the students interview elders in the community that lived through the Civil Rights Era. Plans drastically changed when the pandemic hit. Students were tasked with the added challenge of creating a documentary with youth and elders without cameras or audio gear during a time of social distancing. Students rose to the challenge and found ways to use Zoom, cellphones, animations, photographs and phone interviews to still tell these stories, in beautiful and creative ways, despite limitations. These are their stories. The stories of Phyllis Bruce, Mabel Devereaux, Dorothy Minter, Rose Chew, and Reginald Logan, Sr. Before the pandemic, we were going to do our annual outdoor screening in the park to showcase these videos and bring the community together. Togetherness and shared experience is a big part of cinema. So we decided to do a KZbin Watch Party to enjoy these videos together, as a community. Join us Friday, May 8th, 2020 at 7pm to watch these amazing videos produced by students at the University of North Texas.
