This is my demo of the Sansamp YYZ Geddy Lee Signiture Pedal. All tones are straight captures from the pedal into a DAW to give you an idea of how great this sounds raw. I matched the pedal tones with rush songs as well and zoomed in on the settings so you all can try them out!

Your right hand technique is very good. You have Ged's sound on point. I applaud your dedication to what he played and dialing in the tone. Too often you come across "Geddy Lee" warriors on KZbin with this awfully bright, much too overdriven tone.

I know i am a bit tonedeaf and i can't learn songs (especially bass) by ear, but until i saw the tab for this songs i never would've though that the part that starts at 0:52 is actually this one. Even worse is the fact that now, after i know that this IS the actual part, i still can't hear it in the songs no matter how hard i try. On top of that playing the C-B-A G-E on top of the guitar that plays F E F E or w/e doesn't make any sense to me as well

Great playing man! I've been asked to play in a Rush Tribute show and am doing research on his tone. The SansAmp pedal sounds like a winner. So are you using both pickups or just neck? I've read a few places that he doesn't use any bridge pick up, but listening to the isolated Rush bass tracks I'm not sure, but it does sound like bridge pickup is way down.
@JoeCalderone
@JoeCalderone 4 жыл бұрын
Brian Masek thank you! The pedal is a great start for sure. I think for a while the treble pickup on his jazz bass was broken or poorly wired, so any jazz bass tracks up to snakes and arrows feature that bass pickup heavy sound. He had that broken treble pickup rewired in 2010 and has used both pickups since then. You can check out the sonic differences between snakes and arrows and clockwork angels to see. I personally like the post 2010 sound a little more and use both pickups at full volume when I play (although the tone pot on my treble pickup is old and wonky so sometimes I unintentionally end up with that pre 2010 sound)
@BrianMasek
@BrianMasek 4 жыл бұрын
@@JoeCalderone Yeah I agree that I like the tone better with both pickups. I'm just trying to do what ever is most authentic compared to how people know the songs. I'll probably end up picking up one of those pedals. I was checking out more of the "isolated bass tracks" on youtube. Red Barchetta definately sounds like no bridge pickup, but YYZ songs like at least some. Tom Saywer sounds like minimal bridge pickup. That interesting information on the broken pickups.

@JoeCalderone
@JoeCalderone Ай бұрын
I’d set either the pedal or the amp at noon and mess with the other to dial in tones. If for example you have a tone setting you already like on the GK, try setting the eq on the YYZ to noon and spend more time messing with the drive and blend before digging too much into eq

Joe, QUESTION, If you have the time, (btw, liker and subscriber to you and your band) do you recommend any pedal or preamp that allows for a stereo effects chain? I currently run a Line 6 Pod Pro into a Carvin power amp cuz of the discreet stereo fx loop for modulation fx. I know, crazy for bass but most of my 65 years I was a guitarist in love with my Roland Jazz Chorus 120 amp so I love stereo chorus. But bass is my Primary instrument now. Also funny cuz I don’t gig anymore… just play in my guest bedroom nightly ! Holy moly, love your playing. Just discovered you and your band today, subscribed to both. Rumble on, bass brother !!!
@JoeCalderone
@JoeCalderone 10 ай бұрын
I’m not too familiar with stereo pedals for bass. The closest I can think is maybe a helix? The DI box from sansamp offers a deep and distorted xlr output as well but I’m not sure if that’s exactly what you’re looking for

Light gauge strings needed. To get that same string touch and feel out of 105 on the E string you have to beat the shit out of the string. Geddy uses .095 I think, Rotos(which he's using in this video too)

I'm using a regular set of Roto's (.105-.045) but yes I think some people oversimplify Geddy's approach when then think he just plucks all the strings at max all the time. There are certain notes that he'll accent hard enough that they'll "pop", but most notes are plucked with a moderate hardness. It really depends on the song
@JoeCalderone
