What do you do if you get a pattern that is a total mess? If the directions aren't clear and you have to ask her on every line what she intended because she really didn't write something that was as clear as she considered it?

Every pattern should be tech edited. If your goal is to help the designer to get that pattern in great shape, then it's a smart move to convey that the tech edit may take some time. Maybe work in consecutive order, one section at a time, going back and forth until the pattern is complete. It's a great opportunity to build some trust between you and your client, to educate them and help them grow as a pattern writer. Wishing you the best!

Do crochet amigurumi designers use tech editors or its mainly for wearable patterns?

Anyone who puts out a pattern for other people to make should use a tech editor.
