I like to say that autocross is like racing in a fishbowl. Often what you see is road racing or track days can't cope with the smaller environs. They are usually slower because of that. She's about the social component, it's not dog eat dog, or tweak of the week. You often find that experienced autocrossers who have never tracked are almost as quick as road racing "specialists", because their reactions to throttle, steering and brake inputs are better. Glad I found this.

In the UK we call it Autosolo, we have another sport named Autocross, which is off road. But it's a great way to enjoy your car with friends and learn your car. 😎 Power doesn't matter there's always someone faster in a Miata (MX5).

@512TXS DIY yes, I am in Austin with a 987.1 Cayman S. Also, at noon today is the registration for Shnell Fest at Cota (HPDE). There is an Novice Intro to driving class on Friday 2/25 which will allow novices to drive their car on track with an instructor

IMO it's much more risky to drive on the street. With all of the distracted drivers. Than doing an autocross.

Awesome job with the broadcast Vu and Kathy! New to this whole auto cross thing and have a question about Vu's helmet. What style is it? Which visor is installed on the helmet? Anything other features/options? Thank you!

Thank you for your kind words. The helmet is an old one with no visor/eye protection. I would recommend getting with a visor that you can adjust up and down. You'll want to go to a shop and try them on. Some brands fit better than others depending on the shape of your head. Good luck!

Great episode. Kathy, I have a question for you. I am running a 2003 Boxster S in autocross. I will use the car is some casual tours with the PCA but want to Autocross this car most of the time. What alignment specs should I be running?

It really depends on how your car is set up. But a popular general autocross setup for our cars would be to max the negative camber front and rear (there's a limit to about -2° rear and -1° front on a stock 986), and have a bit of toe out up front and toe in at the rear. A PCA staffer has 1 mm toe out per side up front and 2 mm toe in per side at the rear on his 987 Cayman, but he also has upgraded antiroll bars as well as camber plates that allow -2.3° front camber. Another quick local autocrosser runs his stock 718 Cayman S with 0° toe front and rear and max negative camber. Toe in and toe out will increase wear, and toe out up front will make the car tramline a little bit over certain surfaces.

What tire pressure difference do you set from street factory recommended setting?

Always start with what the vehicle mfg suggests and after a few runs examine your tire wear and adjust accordingly. Have a veteran autocross help you with this.

Autocross seems like it should be mandatory to do (set sessions)to get off your probationary license.

If you AX your daily driver Porsche and then drive a track prepared Porsche for HPDE. Will the AX skills learned transfer to the other car?
