I’ve heard that the CPU (not the GPU) is more powerful than ps4
@OliverY19925 жыл бұрын
@@EchoWinters When measuring by raw processing power yes it technically is, but most developers (third parties most indefinitely) did not utilize it's full potential due to its architectural complexity and having to be optimized for the 360's CPU. So you could argue that in some respects it's irrelevant to be fair, but the low power CPU's in the PS4 and Xbox One is unfortunately the reason for these frame rate issues in this gen. The Last of Us I would agree to have used it's full potential (or very much near) for the resources it had. More RAM and a beefier GPU with the CPU would have helped, but costs always come into the equation. Since Sony (as are MS) are going for beefier AMD CPU's next gen, they will easily undoubtedly trounce the PS3's CPU.

@OliverY19925 жыл бұрын
@@kusumayogi7956 It can be used for GPU functions yes, but its own it's actually very weak. This was an issue found during its development, as originally the PS3 was never to have a GPU. But this proved to be a major issue, and so partnered with nVidia. Unfortunately the RSX (PS3's GPU), was a big disappointment for devs I'm guessing because they had to rush it in and because they curbed its performance. Apparently because they wanted the devs to focus more on the Cell than the GPU for graphics. uk.ign.com/articles/2013/10/08/playstation-3-was-delayed-originally-planned-for-2005 “For a while, [PS3 had] no GPU, it was going to run everything with SPUs. If only both ps3 and the 360 had more memory back then.....
@morganwhaley91197 жыл бұрын
They had a lot of memory for when they came out (for consoles anyway). The Xbox 360 was originally going to have just 256 MB of memory, but the developers of Gears of War convinced Microsoft to double it. The Xbox 360 had 8 times the memory of the original Xbox even though it was released just 4 years later.
@OliverY19926 жыл бұрын
...and Sony opted for unified memory design like MS did. It would have helped developers a lot more if both Sony and MS opted for a total of 1GB unified GDDR3 RAM, but the extra cost would have slowed sales much more. Possibly even killed Sony? Especially with how awfully expensive the console was already at launch. But you have to remember that for consumers then, having 512MB RAM in a computer was pretty much the norm, with the gradual step up to 1GB RAM later.

Which is why it didn't sell to the masses. It really is a piece of art, but the masses don't know how to appreciate it. That low demand at launch trickled up to publishers wanting to opt for xbox 360 development as primary and then porting to ps4. @@FraserSouris that's not true. most of the games were developed for xbox 360 first but publishers didn't want to spend time/money to properly port them over for ps3. if the games were developed for ps3 ground up, they would look a lot better than xbox 360. again, the main reason why they were developed for 360 first was because 360 is where the masses went because of launch price. $600 is insane for a launch price, considering MOST of the sales go to Christmas holiday gifts for kids 12-18. Launch Price is inversely proportional to volume sales of consoles. Volume sales of consoles is directly proportional to publishers making games for that system first.

For nowadays, I don't know, since the consoles come outdated at release. But back in 2005 and 2006, XBox 360 and PS3 were the most powerful gaming machines in the market, so they were worth something.

Honestly the first gen original Xbox was the last good system that Microsoft had. It technically blew the ps2 out of the water. But moving ahead; the ps3 in my opinion was so much more powerful than the Xbox 360. And giving the fact that the BC PS3’s still sell for wayyyyyy more than the Xbox 360 tells a lot!
@HaloinfiniteEternal6 ай бұрын
The Xbox 360 is the most advanced fully custom hardware based Console ever made for Xbox, and its Gpu performance has some significant advantages over the PS3 meanwhile the PS3 Cell CPU had some significant advantages over the Xbox 360 CPU. Both systems were the last fully custom hardware based systems, and it’s a shame now days we get semi custom off the shelf pc parts without the fully custom Console hardware of the past which made Consoles outperform even the most expensive Pc hardware for about 18 months after launch as Consoles used to be ahead of Pc when they launched and it’s all because they used to have fully custom hardware which was unavailable for Pc builders and that’s what made Consoles so special for longest time. PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 were very balanced systems when compared to each other as their advantages evened out for sure which is why they both did some things better than the other, however both was excellent. PlayStation 3 struggled for a while though not because the hardware wasn’t awesome but cause it was hard for third party devs to learn how to properly develop on it to get proper performance out of the cell CPU so it took a few years before it started to have Performance parity with Xbox 360

Sony shot themselves in the foot many times over with the PS3. Exotic CPU design with poor documentation at launch so the devs had no idea how to take advantage of the SPUs (early PS3 games like Ridge Racer 7 did not even use the SPUs) Split memory design with only 256 mb VRAM Nvidia reportedly offered the then under development G92 Tesla chip to Sony for the RSX, but Sony decided to go with the older G70 Curie based chip to cut costs - this meant the RSX lacked unified shaders - something the Xenos chip of the 360 had

Sony: "It was deliberate" - Yeah yeah BULLSHIT! You got lucky devs didn't give up, instead they got smart and as a result, our lovely PS3 didn't crash and burn - Nuff said!
@mikejones38637 жыл бұрын
RJ Nash it's true it was deliberate that the ps3 was difficult to develop for so that games won't be ported to other consoles as easily or not at all, It worked great for them during the ps1/ps2 era most games on ps1/ps2 stayed exclusive because the architecture of those systems were difficult.

Sony is telling the truth. They invested a billion dollars in R and D for the Cell developed by IBM. During the development of Cell, IBM was contacted by Microsoft to make a CPU for their upcoming project Xenon(x360). The engineers at IBM decided to use the lessons learned during Cell's R&D to develop the triple core CPU for X360. Both are basically IBM powerPC in radically different configurations. All in all Microsoft also benefitted a little from Sony's investment in the Cell.

Sorry but I call BS. Naughty Dog are claiming the Cell SPE's are what made the key difference in graphical fidelity between their early and late titles - this is false! They may have made a small difference sure, but the biggest factors are twofold: 1) Game engines and shader algorithms getting much more efficient in general, and better able to use multiple threads (the Cell's PPE has 2 threads so it behaves more like a dual-core CPU). 2) This is the biggest one of all: the development of texture streaming. As seen in CoD MW2 and many other games, this tech increased the level of detail in games FAR more than anything else, and it did so almost overnight. Games no longer needed to load the entire map and all textures into very limited memory, they could just stream in high res textures near the player and use low detail for everything else. Just look at CoD MW to MW2, Oblivion to Skyrim, Doom 3 to Rage, etc etc - all these enormous changes happened on the Xbox 360 and PC too and they didn't have any SPE's! That's why I call BS on what Naughty Dog are claiming about the PS3's processor - it's just marketing crap to promote their own games. Just look at the relatively small amount of bandwidth (around 20Gigabit/sec) available between the Cell and the RSX, most of which has to be used for other tasks, and ask yourself how much can the Cell ''help'' with graphics stuff really?
@alexanderwingeskog7586 жыл бұрын
Well, look at some other "fixed" hardware stuff... Like the C64 (came out in 1982-83) and watch the history of games/demos and the latest demo's is mindblowing and could (or should) run on the same hardware that was off the shelf in 1982. And the C64 is by comparison 100 times easier to learn/program then a PS3. Programming techniques develop and knowledge of the hardware develops as the years pass. Updating hardware often leads to general solutions (programming wise), but fixed hardware leads to advancement in programming techniques. So the "little" bandwidth was used to more or less perfection.

The Xbox 360’s CPU essentially had 3 Big cores and 0 Little cores, while the PS3 CPU had 1 Big cores and 6 Little cores. If developers wrote for 360 first they usually only used the 1 Big core in the PS3 and ignored the 6 Little cores, but if they wrote for the PS3 first they usually took advantage of all the cores. Technically the CPU in the PS3 was powerful enough that a lot of games wouldn’t have needed the GPU.
