Props to can am for that. I love all companies pushing tech and ability The tranny could be the biggest win. Epic in racing as to no longer worried about belt temps and such. More gears gives you mechanical advantage which will help with the added weight/strength. Racers will go through the tranny to prep for a race. Anxious to see the longevity/durability and service intervals for the tranny. But it could reall be a game changer.

Even though it’s pulling less on the upper an arm it doesn’t matter against the chassis because it’s higher up on the chassis. Think about it this way, if you were trying to flip the car over and you had a huge tube connected through the lower a arm connection and either the new or old upper a arm connection on the frame it would take the same amount of force at any distance on the tube from the lower connection point. Only difference is the stress it puts on the connections.
@ShockTherapyllc
@ShockTherapyllc 10 ай бұрын
I agree with your logic. But we had some engineers do the calcs and it does have less affect on body roll the higher you mount the arm even when calculating the fact it pulls less on the mount.

It appears the shock is still at quite an angle. I understand it’s a packaging issue. How important is motion ratio? Always felt valving and spring rate should be able to offset the disadvantage. Would y’all explain why motion ratio is a concern?
@ShockTherapyllc
@ShockTherapyllc 10 ай бұрын
We played with the pics quite a bit and it looks like it’s just shy of 90 degrees at bump. The goal is 90 but close is good too. You can fix bad motion with spring and valving but only if it’s off just a little bit. More than that and you really sacrifice the shocks potential. The better the motion ratio the better the shock can work. The better everything is.

One trade-off of the design appears to be a limit to tire diameter choices, though if the car could run on 35s that would satisfy all but the pro mud guys. Funny, these suspension design concepts were all more cleverly addressed 46 years ago by Mercedes Benz for the W126 chassis (SEL Sedans). I Wonder if we'll ever see any SXS brand adopt active sway bars, another Mercedes idea for the W164 (ML/GLE) more than 20 years ago. Making shocks 'smart', while keeping sway bars 'dumb' seems like an unfinished job. Crazy how far Sport SXSs have come in a decade though, from pushpins and plastic to a 17 billion dollar-a-year market. Props to Can-am for shifting to a modern transmission design.🎯
@ShockTherapyllc
@ShockTherapyllc 10 ай бұрын
Since the car appears to be designs for open desert, Can-Am probably felt 35-inch was adequate. Add portals and you’ll clear larger for the mud if desired.
@swolaver1

I think with 25 inches of suspension travel you would have more than 4 or 5 inches of track width change. However that’s the whole reason they went to 78 inches wide was to combat that track width the change.

Another question, is there a cad software can do generative design or topology optimization for space frame/tube chassis. Many of them do it for casting and miling but i can't mill or cast the whole chassis.

What about the force applied to the inside of the tire on the other side? Wouldn't it increase the load against the top ball joint and offset the benefit?
@ShockTherapyllc

Yes. Your correct but remember two things. One. The inside Tite sees less force in a turn than the outside. Two, the force is left with a tall spindle on both the outside and inside tires than a short spindle.

So you’re saying a low roll center will roll less and be flatter thru the turn. That’s opposite of what I was taught. A low roll center is farther away from the center of gravity. Therefore there is more leverage for the chassis to roll.

Why do offroad vehicles have 1-2inch more travel in the rear. Is there a specific performance reason or it's just easier to have more travel in the rear with the design of rear suspension.
@ShockTherapyllc
@ShockTherapyllc 10 ай бұрын
When you consider a CV and it’s angles you always get more travel in the rear because you don’t have the added angle of turning the hub. Also, it’s best to have more in the rear since most of the drive force and traction come from the rear. More rear travel equals more traction in the rough and more acceleration and speed.

How is ackerman angle done in rear steer vehicles? In normal front steer there's imaginary line from pivot point of the front knuckle to center of rear axle and that's the angle that tie rod arms should be. What about rear steer vehicles that have independently controlled rear wheels how to do ackerman on them considering that both axles steer at different angles. My guess would be to optimize where the Ackerman angle is the most pronounced. Hopefully i explained well what i mean.
@ShockTherapyllc
@ShockTherapyllc 9 ай бұрын
It’s identical to the front but the line goes through the rear pivot line(kPI) and the front differential or imaginary differential if not 4WD. There are lots of options if you need rear Ackerman or not. Hope That helps.

@@ShockTherapyllcBut what about if lets say i want to build a buggy. And i want to have different steering modes lets say 1. Mode front and rear steers at same angle 2. Mode when front axle is at max angle the rear is at 5° 3. Mode when front axle is at max angle then the rear is at 25° I can use two power steering units and some kind microcontroller that can control the angles that but the issue is i can only optimize ackerman angle for only one steering mode. Hopefully i explained what i mean.
@ShockTherapyllc
@ShockTherapyllc 9 ай бұрын
You are correct. You will have to pick. I would not over think this. Maybe put your Ackerman right in the middle between the options. Remember not a big deal in the first. Maybe a consideration on the street. Locked rear diff negates rear Ackerman. Lots of theory’s here. None are completely right. Good luck

Wow the price tags on these sxs are getting out of control polaris and can am 40 to 50 grand is too much for a average person. I will never be able to afford sxs😢

Those 40-50k machines are their top tier machines there's definitely cheaper SXS's you can still have a lot of fun with.

Roll center is not correct. The lower the roll center is the more the vehicle with roll in a turn....

Transmission could be cool if it's strong. They get 0 points for boring out the same motor and dumping more boost in. All Polaris has to do is drop a turbo pro r and canam couldn't touch the hp numbers. Still has the same shitty smart lok differential. I'm sure it'll be fast as heck in the desert. That doesn't matter to the majority of people that ride in the woods though. That upper arm is also gonna take a bunch of abuse anywhere but the desert.

Exactly. Pro R turbo and the numbers change dramatically.

My issue is the goofy looking knuckles didn't need to be like that. They could have achieved a very similar functionality without the ugly front end. Think trophy truck. Make the knuckle taller but keep it inside the tire. Looks do matter and someone may choose a polaris pro R because it looks better. Just sayin

Your force roll center calcs are flawed. Yes it has less load at the mount with the taller spindle but it is effectively working on a longer lever arm giving it more leverage on the chassis. The amount of roll will be similar between the old and new designs.

Yes, this did seem a bit fanboyish on the surface, however as a polaris fanboy i learned a ton here feel that there was just a genuine excitement for the engineering that went into this design (geek stuff) lol. I do feel that they couldve compromised just tiny bit on those upper arms and still had some really great results. But this is what they chose to go with so time will tell if it affects sales, and all the other concerns voiced so far.

@ShockTherapyllc
@ShockTherapyllc 10 ай бұрын
So would it break more on the trails because of the width or because of the front end design?
@mikemiller9119
@mikemiller9119 10 ай бұрын
@@ShockTherapyllc because of the front end design. There are so many times that you’re squeezing by trees, rocks, ledges, you name it. How many people are going to lay it on it’s side and take out the knuckle? I love the rest they have done, but let’s be honest, there will be TONS of people breaking these unless they stick to the dunes only. If that’s the case it will be just fine, because those guys are too worried about scratching their pretty wraps.
