Glass Grinder Diy. On This Tech Tip Thursday, David Gomm shows a Glass Grinder Diy fix on a frozen grinder bit. The allen head nut was stripped, so the bit couldn't be adjusted. He drills out the allen key set nut and then replaces the grinder bit.

My set screw got stripped and stuck. This was exactly the kind of information I have been scouring the internet for, for three days. Thank you so much. This was a life saver!

Ive used cheAp birthday candle wax... you let the melted wax hit the surface, use a butane lighter to force the wax to wick in, and to heat the surface lightly. Then use your allen wrench. It'll surprise you 😊

Great tip about drilling out the set screw! I have had them get stuck before, too. I used "Blaster" (a spray from the automotive store that breaks loose nuts, bolts, etc) to help loosen the screw. Also, used a sink faucet puller with good luck too, to remove the frozen bit.

Great Idea. My set screw was stripped out, so no choice but to drill it out.

@@GommStainedGlass Hey, I know you're busy, but when you have a second, I sent you an email requesting some of your wisdom for a repair I'm getting ready to start. I'd appreciate any help you and Jeanne could send my way! Thanks again, Kristy😊

I had that problem once and beat on my grinder and getting the head off ruined the grinder, so the next time I had that problem and I called the company then sent it in to them. They removed the old bit and put a new one on and charged me a fee for the work and the grinder bit. The problem is you needed to coat the shaft with Vaseline to keep it from seizing. You might be able to use penetrating oil, like WD-40, spray some on and let it sit over night, try to remove it, do it again day after day for several days, then get a wooden stick and gently try to pry it off, tuning it at each effort, gentle is the secret, apply more WD-40 make sure that in future Vaseline is applied to the shaft each time you adjust it.

David, I have a Techniglass "The Grinder" . Do you have any experience with this grinder? My mini bits have started unseating themselves and coming loose about 4 seconds after I turn it on. I tighten them down and it keeps happening? Any advice?

Sorry, that's a new product to the market and I've never bought one, too pricey. So I'm no help on this question.

David, just an update. The company rep said to use plumbers tape on the screw before mounting it. This worked pretty good however, I don't think this problem should be happing on a grinder I have had less than a year.... I thought it was a good suggestion though and thought I would pass along the tip.@@GommStainedGlass

You say there are 3-4 grinding surfaces on a bit. How many hours or how long does a bit last - just an estimate as I know it will depend on how much you use it? Really njoy your weekly videos.

With the stripped out hex nut, that would have been a great idea, I'll look for them when I'm near an industrial supply.
