Great video on idle tuning! Next should be one on the adaptive controls proportional and integral and when those need to be adjusted. Thank you tuning school!

Hey Brett, I actually sent you a GTO file with this same issue. You should do your next video on the same thing but touch base with (Engine-Idle-RPM = adaptive Idle "Proportional and Integral" oscillation. Also to add, do a video on (Engine-Airflow-Dynamic = Prediction Coefficients) i still struggle with this and how it can make my life a living hell. Do you really need it enabled??

Hey there, so to be honest, 9 times out of 10 we are going to recommend you do not touch the adaptive idle settings. Most of the time you will just end up worse off than when you started. You would be surprised how many problems will be fixed by getting your base running airflow table right. As far as prediction coefficients go, out of 7 years of doing this, I have never changed them on a single car. I also have never met a professional tuner that does. Your first person I have even had mention them.

@@brettmcclelland5046 Ok. Jumping up on this soapbox. I don't expect every tooner to master idle control, but this is misleading coming from a school. Idle adaptive airflow makes massive improvements to idle quality - it is the coarse correction for RPM stability, after all. Not changing them is doing driveability and NVH a disservice. As for prediction coefficients...a more difficult topic for sure, but they have their place. However I can confirm that these are not going to be very useful to the DIY guy. In fact, GM makes use of them particularly for emissions improvement. BUT that is not to say they are not the cause of certain issues in vehicles with engine modifications. For more information on what the prediction coefficients are, see my post on the HP Tuners forum below. It provides some background on the science behind transient airflow, which is what the prediction coefficients are responsible for modeling. If TheTuningSchool would like some training for their instructors, let me know... I can detail this stuff beyond the level that anyone needs to know, but at minimum you'd be better equipped to educate others. forum.hptuners.com/showthread.php?88446-G8-LSA-no-PE-enrichment-in-dynamic-air

@@anasasisxenophontis You will notice that these comments are coming from me personally, not from the school. While I am directly affiliated with them they have no censorship over what I have to say. Therefore I don't speak for the entire companies behalf, but I am fairly certain they wouldn't completely disagree with my comments. To clarify my original comment further, I am not discounting the importance of adaptive idle controls, there is no way idle would happen without them. However,, 9 times out of 10 if the base airflow and spark advance settings are done correctly the factory adaptive settings will usually work. There are applications that will need more direct attention to get the idle "acceptable" or even perfect but they are not usually the average vehicle a DIY guy is working on. To that point, in the cases of both adaptive controls and predicted airflow settings, historically our position here at The Tuning School is going to be to teach an average guy what they need to know to make a car perform and drive at 90% of its capability in a production environment (3 to 4 hours per tune). We don't normally take a deep dive into every aspect of a calibration making every nuance perfect. This approach has been synonyms with our brand since the beginning and it works for our customer base and the part of the market we serve. That does not mean that approach is for everyone. I will never profess to know everything, in fact, I know there is a ton of things I can learn. I would be more than happy to do some mind share with you as I am sure it will be very beneficial. Drop me an email and we can set something up! brett@thetuningschool.com
