Came here trying to learn about gamma for LCD displays - stayed for the quality lecture on camera settings. Great video

Cool video! Something that I need to understand better . . . it seems intuitive that you'd want OOTF be as close to a straight line (y = x) as possible - this corresponds to something being equal on the scene end and the display end. This influences your choice of gamma or the power exponent in the OETF and EOTF, but why is there a convention for gamma being high on one end or low on another? More generally, what are the interpretations of gammas in the OETF and EOTF?

I think just for preference... Maybe you want your shadows compressed to draw attention to the highlights or vice versa? That's my understanding based on, admittedly, very little.

The reason is allocation of bits. We do not have infinite bandwidth and as such we need to get as much as we can out of the available bandwidth. We do this by allocating more bits in the areas where our vision is most sensitive (dark areas). This is what the gamma curve does for us. There are also some historical reasons that coincide with this.

Honestly, I still don't really understand gamma... It seems that the OETF and EOTF basically just cancel each other out, so why use them in the first place?

Yeah they really need to do follow up video all I ever heard of before is EOTF didn't even know about OETF or OOTF!

Basically to get more luminance detail, but also because sometimes you don't want want it to cancel out based on the mood and balance you want in a shot. (This is just what I understand, I may be wrong) Camera's can only record so many values of luminance, and if you use a flat curve then the image may look, well, flat, with most of your detail being in midtones. If you use a OETF curve, the the camera can record more detail in the shadows, giving you more to work with in post production, but possibly bringing up shadow and midtone values and slightly compressing highlights (which are generally less valued than shadows). To compensate, EOTF is a gamma curve that recompresses those shadows to give you the flat look that will look as natural to your eyes as your display is capable of displaying it. So why the curves? If you like what the video looks like straight from your camera, then the curve probably isn't helping, but if you want to do a color grade of any kind, you need as much detail as you can get from your camera so that your computer has enough data to work with and still give a natural image after developing. Without gamma, there's not much data in the shadows to work with, so if you try to lighten the shadows, you might find a lot of posterization and lack of detail, but if you're using gamma, then the computer can brighten the shadows without loosing so much data that the image looks bad. EOTF I believe comes effectively before this, however, so that using this gamma curve doesn't make the image look overly dark. I hope that makes sense! I think a way to think of it is that OETF warps reality and makes the image look weird and EOTF then simulates reality and normalizes the image from that data, but you have more control over how "reality is warped" or what the image looks like as it goes from the camera to the final video being watched.

@@originalgovcast2296 Our eyes see more like log - the camera sensor records in linear. So to capture more dynamic range the camera adds the scene referred gamma, but when being displayed on a monitor that gives you that flat look where there is less contrast and the display then inverts the whole thing to balance those stops of light to resemble how our eyes see it in nature where shadows and highlights are all there but the majority is still in the middle. hard to explain without graphics. Basically we don't see linear as a natural image but it's ideal for sensors - to maximize the amount of stops - the camera will apply the EOTF for the capture - we then add the gamma correction with our display OETF to invert the captured stops and put them into a gamma curve that our brains and eyes understand and accept. What then makes it confusing is the lighting environment comes into play where the gamma correction for the display needs to different depending on how much light is in the room - this is where we get the gamma 2.4 ( darker rooms ) and gamma 2.2 ( more lit room - i.e. office )

It’s funny that people are still self deprecating themselves when speaking about factual details about their profession. Saying things like “geeky” leans toward dumbing down information and promotes ignorance. Every artist should be interested in perfecting their craft. Knowing your stuff is never bad, it’s expected.

I just don’t personally believe in the need to adjust to a child/parent power dynamic when communicating. 🤷🏿♂️
