This is a good, technically accurate explanation of gamma. As you say, it all dates back to the early days of TV (1940's) and CRT displays. The gamma value of 2.2 has been baked into the specs since before most of us were born.

La tua serie di video è fantastica. Seguo molti canali di video e fotografia internazionali ma nessuno, dico nessuno, è così completo, semplice e chiaro nelle spiegazioni. Ti auguro con tutto il cuore il successo che meriti.

Isn't it weird, I spent weeks searching for info on gamma, and found only the same 3 vids each time. Days later, here's helpful gamma videos appearing on their own. At least we know search isn't being manipulated, huh?

Is important for me to communicate clearly and to get the message through without confusion. If I can't explain it simply enough, it means I don't know it well enough. Thanks for your comment.

Just wanted to say thank you! I have watched all of your exposure videos as well as a few others and they were EXTREMELY helpful. I learned a lot as you did a very good job of explaining complex information in a way I could understand. KZbin is hard but keep up the hard work, you have a lot to offer! Also to get KZbin to show your videos more (more people need to see these), make playlists of your videos and also add end screens promoting your other videos. This overall with help you with the KZbin algorithm. Thanks again 🙂

Regardless of CRT monitors, gamma encoding or similar perceptual curve would have to be applied for compact final storage formats, and in several editing tools, such as histogram display and curves, addition of noise, unsharp mask, sharp scaling with negative filter lobes. I think that floating point expression have an implicit gamma of sorts, because they have the same number of quant steps for every doubling of level.

Very well explained G! I understand it way better now but it's still not very clear how to actually apply this in practice. When to apply gamma correction and when not to? And how much gamma correction? I think i've seen 0.7 and 1.4 and 2.2 gamma corrections for textures. Should all my textures be 32 bit exr's from now on? Because that's heavy. At my previous internship they just used jpegs for the textures in their shading networks because it's not heavy
@g.improductions
@g.improductions 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Stef! Using JPG textures is not a good idea because of compression etc, but I am almost finished a new video where I go into the CG side of things more in details! Stay tuned!

I only wish i could see a tutorial of a linear workflow using lightwave and octane render. or for that matter any 3d application *specifically* using Octane renderer, in order to see -exactly- what tools are and more importantly whats not used in the process of a linear workflow. Octane has gamma correction all over the place. for the textures for the camera,, so to see whats being utilized in the process would clear up the confusion created via a mixed interface environment.
@g.improductions
@g.improductions 4 жыл бұрын
I would try and focus more on the concept of why and when you need to apply a gamma correction. If you really understand the process then you can figure out the necessary steps in any software. I will have a look at Octane and report back!
