LaisDCC 8-pin Decoders Review - under Test...

LaisDCC decoders put under test by selectively fitting to locos with poor performance to see how the decoder manages. LaisDCC decoders are reviewed and you are shown how well they work in locos with potential.
Decoder Version Used: 8-pin 4 Func with trailing wires (not direct plug)
Notes: Some came up as manufacturer 126 and some 134. Both versions worked differently when it came to programming.
Note: These decoders may be incompatible with come controllers. I used NCE powercab.

Great review I have be if and um these for few days. I have a dapol 04 shunter and need slow speed for shunting these decoders look perfect for the job, thanks for sharing

Yeah, these decoders are reasonably good and cheap, although can be a bit noisy at times. Depending on the motor really depends on the realism when in use with the decoder. I've replaced some of mine in trains that they didn't work so well in. I found the Hornby 0-4-0s didn't like these particularly.

Greetings, i too purchased some of these laisdcc decoders about a year ago installed them into my locos and all seemed fine as i only test for loco directions, lights and crawl speeds, i was pleased. i have a variety of dcc decoders i use and i believe i understand the configuration principle well enough. my plan all along was to use computer software to drive some trains at prototypical speeds. i recently brought 4 more lais decoders but when it came to adjusting the cvs cv2 cv5 & cv6 i found that the values were accepted by the decoder (by the trade mark motor shuffle) and the visual display on the dcc system screen but on physical performance the locos remain unchanged speed wise i did this a number of times using different settings attempting to get the top speeds a lot lower but all in vain. i then went on to try all 4 different decoders in 4 different loco motors and found that changing the cv values made no difference in any of the cases, i finally dug out the locos i fitted last year with the lais decoders hoping it was a faulty batch to blame, but again when i tried the cvs on that batch too there was no difference in performance. it seems to conclude the cvs 2, 5, 6 on these decoders do not function. have you tried to program these cvs successfully as im sure im not doing anything incorrectly. ive also scouted the internet to see if anyone has had any similar issues.

Hi, I've managed to adjust cv2, never tried cv5 and cv6. Also, it could be because the manual does not display the max amount the cv could be set to in some places, hence changing the cv by a few numbers would not make a visible difference. I have certainly got CV2 to work on multiple trains, although I am aware that there are different versions of LaisDCC Decoders, with different versions of firmware, which could be your problem (I only have 1 type of laisdcc decoder). The only issue I've had to far is decoder functions becoming unresponsive - ie. turning themselves off and refusing to turn back on, requiring the locototive decoder to effectively need restarting, taking the loco of the track for 30 secs and placing back on. Cheers for the speedy reply. I left the same comment on jenny kirks channel. On reading some of the comments left there one person mentioned issues with setting cv5 the same as myself. Im thinking i may just have to find another use for these decoders.

eureka........you have to put the decoder into 128 speedstep mode then they accept cv changes

Do you know if they are compatible with the gaugemaster digital prodigy express control

Unfortunately I do not know. Information on compatibility is probably available on LaisDCCs website/manuals. I am aware that some older versions of the Hornby Select do not work with these decoders. I use the NCE Powercab only on my layout and sadly have no experience with any Gaugemaster DCC Controllers

If the controller is NMRA compliant then it should work
