Another thumbs UP for powerline adapters. I have TP-Link AV600 / WPA4220 plugs and they are a brilliant solution for me and were set up in literally seconds. I get pretty much the same speeds through them as I do directly from the router (30-40mb... I'm not in a blessed area for broadband in the UK!). In time I would like to do more hard-wiring through the house, but for now these powerline adapters are a brilliant solution for my not-spots.

I’d like to say that the effect gravity would have on an electromagnetic wave (Wi-Fi in this case) is so small that saying that Wi-Fi range is affected by gravity is nonsense. What Alex wants to say is that Wi-Fi antennas create a sphere of coverage around them and it is better to have the antennas higher off the ground so that the coverage reaches the upper floors of the house

Hey Alex, power line adapters have to be on the same power circuit. So if you have one electrical circuit for the upstairs sockets, one for downstairs and often a separate for your kitchen sockets, they won’t be able to see each other if you spread them out. It’s for that reason that usually aren’t that useful 🤷🏻‍♂️

I use a powerline adapter for 1 computer in the house as my housemate wasn’t getting the speeds he needed for work and it was great! He got 60mbps over it. Although it wasn’t very effective in other rooms. I also had to set it up while plugged in on the same sockets before plugging into a different room. I’m not entirely a fan of them but for certain reasons they might be useful.

Got to disagree about Powerline. I have the same Powerline that Alex is using and it is flawless. Very fast and very stable. I have since added a 3rd and 4th and it now isn't as good or reliable but it is still better than WiFi. Obviously true Ethernet is far superior though. Powerline does have a use case though.

the reason for the powerline adapters not work is due to the new build home normally runs on multiple circuits on the power lines so if you have one connected to the power line downstairs and then one upstairs they running completely on different circuits which will cause no connection at all. check on your consumer unit to see if your plug sockets on to different circuits

Irresponsible to trash power line just because you can’t make it work. Nobody would argue that it is better than a direct Ethernet connection but when running a cable is not an option it can be a very satisfactory solution. It provides me with usable Internet in my garden summer house and the three ip cameras in the garden run perfectly well.

Powerline can be useful in many situations. Yes an ethernet connection is better but it is not a fair comparison. Powerline in many cases will outperform a WiFi connection greatly. If running ethernet is not possible Powerline is a great option.

Power line adapters work for as long as the 2 sockets being used are on the same MCB. If your RCD has splits MCB’s for say, upstairs and downstairs sockets, it won’t work if one adapter is downstairs and the other is up. This is because the circuits arent connected. Try doing them on ground level. Should work

most flats have one phase for most electrical outlets. i can be tricky in a multi-floor apartment or even a house. but yeah most of the times power line can be very fast. the only reason it may be a slow connection is interference with appliances or close by a ham radio operator. (although most of the times the ham radio operator has more interferences on the HF bands)
@petermiddleton
@petermiddleton 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, It's probably in one of the posts down below, but you do know that your electric wiring are running on 3 phases, this means that not all outlets are connected to each other, the outlets are spred out on all 3 phases to even the load on the system, you have to be on the same phase (Actual Wire ) on the 2 outlets you are trying to use, otherwise there are no physical connection and no network. but otherwise, good show and good info. :)

Going to have to disagree with Alex on the powerline adapters. I have the TP-Link 8630P powerline adapters and they're working amazingly well. I haven't had a any issues with it just yet like I've had with other older and cheaper powerline adapters but they do the job pretty well, even with older house wiring. I have one powerline on the ground floor and a WiFi enabled powerline in the loft. I get 60-70mbps from the sky router and I get almost the same from the powerline extender in the loft aswell. I think it might not work for Alex as his wiring on each floor or rooms may be on multiple separate RCDs. Or he can't set it up properly. I can admit the setup process can be a bit of a fiddle. Ideally, I would get the multiple Mesh routers but but I've heard it messes up with Sky Q boxes and the multiroom boxes as they are on they're own wifi mesh system.
@SquirreliciousMe
@SquirreliciousMe 3 жыл бұрын
PowerLine is hit and miss for a variety of reasons, they're not so great, always a "last chance saloon" option, but they can work in some cases and work well for sure. You can have a mesh network and Sky - what you need however is to force set both the Sky Q wireless and your own Wireless channels properly - and manually. Sky Q loves to use 5Ghz chan 36, on all boxes, so you want to not use any auto-crap on your wireless kit, and make sure it uses stuff at the other end of the 5Ghz band that isn't overlapping, and you'll have a good experience. You can also force Sky Q to use Ethernet if you have such an option which will significantly improve matters. The main problem with Sky Q in my experience is the clueless installers who have no idea how it actually works, or how Wi-Fi works.

It sucks you haven't had success using powerline adapters. My house was built in the 50's and I've been using the tp-link powerline adapters successfully for over a year now, between 2 floors, to uplink a Unifi switch. No issues, no complaints. I've now used powerline adapters in my house for years and they work fine. They don't ever lose connection and I've never noticed them being slower than plugging my device directly into the modem. You might sometimes have a problem of them finding each other if both adapters can't find a connection on the electrical circuit, but that's not their fault.

Agree with you here, I have to hard disagree with what Alex said about powerline adapters. I've used them across the house for three years now, the best way to get my TV to stream is with a powerline adapter and ethernet cable. Copes with Twitch streaming in one room, and streaming media to other devices in other rooms. Also a less invasive and more elegant process than running Cat5 / 6 cables through or around walls for those that don't have that option. Also have to remember they can't be used on extension leads, they must be plugged directly into the wall, and that is what most people don't realise.

Well explained. If only all ISP customers realised they pay for the speed to their router. The amount of calls from people who do a WiFi test whilst having 20 devices connected, some streaming at same time then expect the full Mbps they have in their package. Then seem amazed when told an ISP doesn't guarantee the full speed at all times to all devices on WiFi and are shocked when it's suggested to them if they're working from home best to use ethernet for a great connection.

Before running the initial, wired speed test, it would be wise to check what speeds you are supposed to be getting from the provider. 40/10 or 80/20 etc. And what the minimum promised speed is. Also, mesh is the way forward in my opinion, and power line adaptors are great as long as they are plugged in on the same wiring circuit, which I guess you'd be able to check by looking at your fuse box / consumer unit.

Very interested about your comments re powerline adapters. My experience is different to yours. I have a VDSL connection 80/20 to the router in the hallway. Using a Tenda PH3 powerline adapters and a network switch, I am able to get the same speeds to my TV, Apple TV, PS4 and Sky Q box. Having said this, they have to be plugged in on the same floor of my 10 year old build house- the electrical distribution board messes things up.

Powerline adapters need to be on the same phase line, check the house line schedule. How to find out which wall sockets are on the same phase, connect lamps or radios to the wall sockets and remove the fuses. The wall sockets that stop working are on the same phase, so different parts of a building are on different phases in your fuse box.

I dont care for extenders or the powerline adapters, however I did decide to invest in gigabit netgear powerline adapter ( one supply and the other is wireless and has one port to hardwire) as far as my service, im 1Gbps symmetrical out in BFE. I hardwired my house with cat 6 drops, however I wanted to get internet to my barn mainly for IP cameras to get another view on the property, since my barn has a feed from my main panel instead of another meter i decided to give powerline a shot. its maybe about 300 to 400 feet away and im surprised how well the powerline adapters have worked. I set it up and it works like a charm with decent results. the way i have it, im using a outlet in my network panel fed on its on dedicated breaker, at which point the adapters work anywhere I put them. but the speed results in the barn were great. although im on a gigabit service and pull around 900 wired, I do suffer speed loss, but Ive seen anywhere between 200 and 500 download (connected to the powerline wirelessly) I never tried directly connected to the other adapter. But regardless it works for what I need it to do.

Powerline adapter may need a phase coupler. I dont know how the electrical wiring is done in the UK, but here in Germany the three phases may be separated and distributed to different floors separately. and I have to say, I only do network but low voltage power wiring (24V max) so I may be wrong with how the phases are distributed. I faced similar issues with powerline, and if it is possible, sure I prefer Cat 6 or higher cabling above powerline. Thanks for the video for showing the broader public that it can be as simple as putting the router on a cupboard. Some folks aren't aware of those tips.

Here in italy residential building normally only have 2phase ac (220v or 230-240v depending on how old the cabling and the transformers in the area are). The are, like in germany, hot and neutral (blue and brown or something similar). Three pase ac with 3 hot and 1 neutral (380 to 400v) are only for business that need a lot of current (more than 6-10 kv) or have equipment that need 3 phase. From 3 phase ac you can have 1 or 2 220v ac lines, depending on how you cable it. If you do that in a home and you what to use powerline you need to know how the electrician split the phases because if the 2 phase ac is made with hot+neutral the powerline will work, if it hot+hot it will not work or it can give problems becasue it's not desined to with like this. If you have to possibility to look, you can see in most restourant, hotels or business in general that they have 2 power input, a 220v line and a 380v lines. I've also seen only a 380 feed and some transformers in the factory but only in old business. That becasue if you don't need more that 3-6kv in 220v it does not make sense to spend a LOT of money to pay an electrician to do all the wiring to have a true 220v line from a 380v three phase line. I hope it was clear enough because thats the most i could remember from when my electrician worked to upgrade my house wiring

10:00 i have some cheap powerlan adapters from tp link myself and they work just fine. Your house is probably too new. It probably has filters for the ac that filter out noise in the power cables. But the adapters rely on that noise. Or your floors have different phases. Mine dont work when one is connected downstairs and the other on the 1st floor, but they work from the 1st floor to the 2nd and if both are on the same floor. Its the same reason why they dont recommend plugging them in an extention chord. First try plugging them in the same cheap multi plug extention chord, then try plugging them in in the same set of outlets to test them, then try them in the same room, then on the same floor. If they don't work in the cgeap extention chord, they may be broken, if they don't work in the same set of outlets or in the same room, then you have filtering outlets and if they don't work on the same floor, you have filtering between the safety switches(idk what they are called but they are in the electrical pannel as a safety method for overcurrent protection).They can be a little bit finicky at first, but if they're working, they are miles better than wifi through a brick wall with a cheap usb dongle.

My virgin router thinks it’s smart so it kept kicking all my devices onto the 2.4ghz network. I split them into two SSIDs and disabled “smart”. Problem solved, 350+mbps on all compatible devices.

Strange your power line adapters didn’t work, I’ve got one in the hall for the front doorbell and camera and one down the end of the garden in the shed. The one in the shed is the furthest away running of the armoured power cable that feeds the shed. That provides WiFi for the gardens smart bulbs and an access point for streaming Netflix in the hot tub

@@Shteev91 it's not as fast as the normal router but it's usable to stream HD content. I have little to no usable signal in my area so they are a must for the shed. I've since added a third for upstairs so the Mrs can stream on the bedroom TV. She was buffering before but now it's cured by getting another adapter. They'll never provide great speeds but they do solve a not spot issue. Looking into setting up a mesh but I've read somewhere about not being able to split the band's.

my area is crap at the moment but openreach is currently installing new lines, so soon i can call my provider and upgrade to the package I used to have before I moved 10 miles away from my old house. I use ethernet over powerline plugs which do come in handy, but I did have a problem a while ago. Where the wifi would give me full speed and the plugs would not but then it would be the other way round..It has worked fine since although I do miss having a 30 meter ethernet cable from the hub to my room..It broke a long time ago

The There’s a reason it doesn’t let you separate the bands….. It’s a mesh hub for the BT Complete Wi-Fi discs and as I’m sure you know, most mesh Wi-Fi routers don’t et you split bands due to how the mesh works.

How should they work, as you said you have a new house and the electric circuits are splitted, by all the power you need its better the way it is than all on one circuit - no wonder for me that they do not find, they are simply on two different electic circuits

Great video bro I done this few months back for a mate i split the ssid so there was a separate network for 2.4ghz and 5ghz as he said speeds were all over the place also a tip as well is that sometimes when my mate tries to play a game with someone in the house on xbox on the same network such as fortnite it would kick one of them out the game so I said one connect to 2.4ghz and one connect to 5ghz and it worked neither of them ever have been kicked out of a game since.

Hi Alex I have been watching some of your KZbin videos. I am getting my house rewired,due to renovation work. I was wanting to run fibre optic through out the house. Can you suggest anything I will need to watch out for, and is this something a general Electrician can manage ? Thanks Craig

Powerline isn't bad, it just isn't the solution for everyone. Mine is getting 310mbps around my house so it definitely can work well. It just depends on the house sadly so I'd buy and try but if they don't work, return them.

They need to be connected to the same ring socket to work the power line. Modern houses have a separate circuit for each ring, usually sectioned by floor. So if you have one powerline plugged into the GF ring and one into the 1stFloor RIng, it will never work

I always find it interesting when Alex doesn’t address comments made by viewers especially when he’s been called out on his lack of knowledge around how home wiring is actually setup and his lack of understanding how power line adapters actually work. Good advice in general but there are plenty of people out there who use power line adapters to great effect…..

I believe so, I have a wireless ethernet like Alex shows (but works) don’t have any issue and it seems to push out whatever the hub sends. I played around on 2.4 and 5 and there’s a noticeable difference. So I can’t see why the wireless discs wouldn’t work. Have a play around with it. If you find out and could get back to me it’d be great, as I’ve thought of purchasing the discs but wasn’t sure due to efficiency
